Bryn Lyrics

Ion displacement
Won't work in the basement
Especially when I'm not with you
Here in the heartland
A feeling so startling
I don't know what i should do

Oh Bryn, you see through the dark
Right past the fireflies that sleep in my heart
You know it's easy to see
Wait for the season to come back to me

Nights by the ocean
A westerly motion
That moves California to sea
Eyes like a seagull
No Kansas-born beetle
Could ever come close to that free

Oh Bryn, you see through the dark
Right past the fireflies that feed in my heart
You know it's easy to see
Wait for the season to come back to me

I went to college with these guys-- it's about a girl named Bryn in our class at Columbia. They are and were good friends (and more for a while, but not now.) Just to clear it up.

The first two lines are wrong... "Ion displacement won't work in the basement Especially when I'm not with you"

The lyrics booklet definitely reads "Ion displacement won't work in the basement" and "Kansas-born beetle."

This song has such... weird... lyrics, but it's my favorite song of all time, mainly because every time I listen to it I get this kind of subliminal feel from the totally stupid lyrics that this Bryn is like the most perfect girl in the whole world. Why? I don't know, it's definitely not the lyrics that convey that meaning at all... it's like reading between the lines... but I want to meet her :D

It's "ion displacement." The singer is clearly indicating the lack of chemistry he feels in the nether regions when Bryn isn't around. Obvs.

My Interpretation

this song is just such a lovely song of longing with adorable animal/regional metaphors! the writing is so fun

plus, the song is spelled "Bryn" and the (Bren?) part is, well, Bryn

i agree, ion displacement.

also, i think the second chorus is slightly different, i believe they beat rather than sleep.

i think the song references the sort of displacement one feels when moving back and forth between home and school, or any other similar "displacement". see seagull vs. beetle in second verse, he is essentially telling us he feels more alive on the coast. bryn, either because she reminds him of the coast, or because she is the thing about the coast he loves, brings out the same feelings in him, and he loves her for it.
