No, I'm not the man I used to be lately
See, you met me at an interesting time
And if my past is any sign of your future
You should be warned before I let you inside
Hold on to whatever you find, baby
Hold on to whatever will get you through
Hold on to whatever you find, baby
I don't trust myself with lovin' you
I will beg my way into your garden
Then I'll break my way out when it rains
Just to get back to the place where I started
So I can want you back all over again
(I don't really understand)
Hold on to whatever you find, baby
Hold on to whatever will get you through
Hold on to whatever you find, baby
I don't trust myself with lovin' you
Who do you love?
Girl, I see through, through your love
Who do you love?
Me or the thought of me?
Me or the thought of me?
Hold on to whatever you find, baby
Hold on to whatever will get you through
Hold on to whatever you find, baby
I don't trust myself with lovin' you
Hold on to whatever you find, baby
Hold on to whatever will get you through
Hold on to whatever you find, baby
I don't trust myself with lovin' you
I don't trust myself with lovin' you
I don't trust myself with lovin' you
I don't trust myself with lovin' you
I don't trust myself with lovin' you
I don't trust myself with lovin' you.
See, you met me at an interesting time
And if my past is any sign of your future

Hold on to whatever you find, baby
Hold on to whatever will get you through
Hold on to whatever you find, baby

wow. its weird when you realize that you weren't in love with someone.. you were in love with the thought of them.
i love this song. it made me realize a lot.
can u explain<br /> <br /> its weird when you realize that you weren't in love with someone..<br /> you were in love with the thought of them.<br /> <br />
This song for me is a story of the past year of my life.. even though I am a girl, I play the role john did in this song. I met my boyfriend at an interesting time.. a time where I no longer had no idea who the hell I was anymore. I just had horrible things happen that affected me enought to change myself. I told him that he should be warned when he met me. He asked me on a date and I said "no you dont want to get into this'. he wouldn't give up but even when I said yes, I still told him that he didn't want to get into this. I didn't trust myself with love and still dont.
when john says he will beg is way into the garden and get back out when it rains.. i dont think he is saying that he wants to 'duck out' when bad times hit. that would make him a jerk.. and john is nothing less than wonderful. he says that he would do it just to watch her back all over again.. i think that means that he wants to see her back again when she is happy even if that means he has to go through the sorrow again..shes worth it. i would go back through all my heartache just to see my friend last year be happy again. but i cant.. you cant change the past and that is why i dont trust myself with love. i want my boyfriend to hold onto whatever he can to get him through. even if its not me.. cuz my relationship is for him.
it's kind of like he's afraid of getting too close, and at the same time he's afraid of letting her get too close. he's had something happen to him in his past that has changed him, and he doesn't want her to get hurt because of it.
she doesn't know the real him yet because he hasn't "let her inside", but she is falling for who she thinks he is ("who do you love, me or the thought of me?")
great song...this is one of my favorites on continuum.
It should be noted that there's a crucial point that has been lost due to incorrect lyrics.
Who do you love? Girl I see through, through your love Who do you love me or the thought of me? Me or the thought of me?
That being stated, I agree with amster8, but I also feel as if he's express that she may only be with him because of what she knows of him, or her idealized picture put into place in her mind. It makes sense. He states he can see through her love, and her love is merely what she thinks him to be. His first verse is a warning of the beginning of the relationship they're about to enter. In the second verse, he expresses that he would choose to end the relationship and start over again.
the way i see it, the song is really sending quite a contradictory message throughout, except for this interlude which you've corrected.<br /> <br /> the title being 'i don't trust myself' suggests as i feel the lyrics (for the most part) that it's really john himself who has the problem in the relationship. so he is the one dragging the girl along:<br /> <br /> 'if my past is any sign of your future<br /> you should be warned before i let you inside'<br /> <br /> he's warning her he's dangerous.<br /> <br /> 'i will beg my way into your garden<br /> i will break my way out when it rains'<br /> <br /> he's pulling himself into this relationship which he doesn't think will work in the first place, and he knows he will ultimately fall apart when it "rains," so to speak.<br /> <br /> back to the title, he doens't trust himself, not that he doesn't trust her, which is why i find this "girl i see through your love" part so contradictory. even if it was as it's put incorrectly, that could be seen as the side of the girl being depicted.<br /> <br /> ultimately i guess this song is about a fear of john's to be in a committed relationship originating in a fear that it would only end or that he would only ruin it.<br /> <br /> but all these views seem to capture the song well.
I am deeply in love with this song. Especially the ending, when everything fades out except the horns....oh my god.
"if my past is any sign of your future you should be warned before i let you inside"
good game Mr. Mayer... very jeE-nEe-yUs ;)
Only some people can relate to actually being honest with themselves and say... "Hey... I don't think I'm mature enough to really be in a relationship. I don't know if I can be unselfish." The attraction is there... but Mayer knows he's an asshole and will possibly send the girl in a runaround.
Great song... music arrangement is great... love the horns that introduce the guitar riffs (which are fantastic, btw) then slowly fade into the end... yip!
"no i'm not the man i used to be lately see you met me at an interesting time"
whenever i listen to this song i'm reminded of the movie "fight club"
@MissBron Lol it reminds me of the relationship between Olivia and President on "Scandal"
After reading the comments I think I understand the song better. The song is definitely how you feel when your in a friends with benefits or Mistress/Affair situation. You love the person or the thought of the person, but in the end you could never truly be with the person or fully understand that person, because your only getting the best of them. You technically don't have to deal with the bad stuff. "when john says he will beg is way into the garden and get back out when it rains, and then come back again" Its hard to trust your feelings because the whole relationship is shallow.
I'm in a kinda wierdish relationship. I met a guy when I was 16. Then back again when I was 20. And for the past 15 years we've been having an affair, we even have a child together. we even married other people and still keep seeing each other. But I could never see myself leaving my husband for him and I'm pretty sure he could never see himself leaving his wife for me. But we still do it religiously, John even says "my past is indicator or your future" But his cheating past would be my cheating future. I couldn't trust that!
this is actually a song that was written a while ago just never released, much like "another kind of green" was
Great song.
The guy is at a stage in his life, where he has been acting differently, where he has not been himself. and a girl has fallen in love with him, now he is questioning this girl, wondering why she loves him. This guy is nervous about his true self, and doesnt trust himself with the girl. he is scared to love her because he is afraid he may go back to his old self, and he will dissapoint her, or he wont be what she expected.
thats just what i think.. if that makes any sense to anyone else..
see, i think that this song is really sexually suggestive.<br /> <br /> <br /> i think that the whole concept with it being 'i don't trust myself with loving you' is probably because he has so much lust for this woman he is trying to pursue.<br /> <br /> "i will beg my way into your garden<br /> i will break my way out when it rains" - i think this is to do with having sex, and him 'coming' <br /> <br /> overall i think its an extremely sexual song... i'm not normally this dirty minded but i listened to this an percieved it this way. i'm probably wrong but ah well ;)<br />
i actually agree completely. great analysis :)
