I pack my case, I check my face
I look a little bit older
I look a little bit colder
With one deep breath, and one big step
I move a little bit closer, I move a little bit closer
For reasons unknown

I caught my stride, I flew and flied
I know if destiny's kind, I've got the rest on my mind
Well, my heart
It don't beat, it don't beat the way it used to
And my eyes
They don't see you no more
And my lips
They don't kiss, they don't kiss the way they used to
And my eyes don't recognize you no more

For reasons unknown
For reasons unknown

It was an open chair
We sat down in the open chair
I said, if destiny's kind, I've got the rest on my mind
But my heart
It don't beat, it don't beat the way it used to
And my eyes
They don't see you no more
And my lips
They don't kiss, they don't kiss the way they used to
And my eyes don't recognize you at all

For reasons unknown
For reasons unknown

I said, my heart
It don't beat, it don't beat the way it used to
And my eyes don't recognize you no more
And my lips
They don't kiss, they don't kiss the way they used to
And my eyes don't recognize you no more

    Song Meaning

I think it's fairly obvious that this song is about falling out of love and wanting that lost passion back. For those that need a little convincing:

Have you people ever loved somebody? Sometimes it comes very quickly, very easily As easy as the way a beautiful English girls hair falls across her shoulder Sometimes it disappears just as quick You wake up one morning The butterflies stop fluttering But you want it back and you want to fight for it You want to breath that fire again So you call for it, you call out

(Source: youtube.com/watch - The Killers Live Albert Hall )

These are Brandon Flowers own words during the Albert Hall concert. I think this is the true meaning behind the song. But feel free to interpret it any way you like. :)

I saw The Killers live just less than one month ago, and after performing this song,Brandon made a comment, something like "...this song is about when you wake up in the morning and everything's changed...you try and try and hope you will feel the same way again...but nothing seems to help..." So yes, sounds to me not exactly like a divorce, but maybe like a break up.

This is one of my favourite songs by The Killers, and I think Sam's Town album was unfairly underrated.

I think this song is a loss of innocence/loss of love type of thing. He feels old and tired and he's lost his passion. Being with his significant other doesn't excite him anymore. The 'pack my case' might mean that he's leaving (going to work, on tour).

    these are correct.

I pack my case. I check my face. I look a little bit older. I look a little bit colder. With one deep breath, and one big step, I move a little bit closer. I move a little bit closer. For reasons unknown.

I caught my stride. I flew and flied. I know if destiny’s kind, I’ve got the rest on my mind. But my heart, it don’t beat, it don’t beat the way it used to. And my eyes, they don’t see you no more. And my lips, they don’t kiss, they don’t kiss the way they used to, and my eyes don’t recognize you no more.

For reasons unknown; for reasons unknown.

There was an open chair. We sat down in the open chair. I said if destiny’s kind, I’ve got the rest on my mind. But my heart, it don’t beat, it don’t beat the way it used to. And my eyes, they don’t see you no more. And my lips, they don’t kiss, they don’t kiss the way they used to, and my eyes don’t recognize you at all.

For reasons unknown; for reasons unknown.

I said my heart, it don’t beat, it don’t beat the way it used to and my eyes don’t recognize you no more. And my lips, they don’t kiss, they don’t kiss the way they used to, and my eyes don’t recognize you no more.

For reasons unknown; for reasons unknown; for reasons unknown; for reasons unknown.

This seems like a breakup song, but more intelligent.

This is why I love the Killers...they make music enlightening, smart, and beautiful.

Spectacular song!!! the lyrics are great, the music is AMAZING! To me this song isn't really about a break up so much as simply falling out of love with someone. You wake up one day and realize that, somehow, things just aren't the same between you and another person and you can never go back.

"But my heart it don't beat....etc" is the best bit, it's amazing. it really sounds like he means what he's singing. As if he's trying to force the words out through the pain. This song, it just speaks volumes to me.

This is my favorite song of the album as well. I think that he is reflecting on past life events...and has actually taken the time to stop and look back by looking at his own face...he realizes that he has changed so much, but is unsure how or why (time). It is very common for middle aged adults to look back into their lives for a sense of accomplishment/failure. If destiny's kind and he doesn't lose his mind (into older adulthood)..when he says "i move a little bit closer" he is referring to the end of his life.....this song can have many meanings

all in all, his singing style is cool...you can feel the meaning/passion in his voice

    i think the beginning

"I pack my case. I check my face. I look a little bit older. I look a little bit colder." he realises he's "getting older" or just changing, and things are changing.

the "i move a little bit closer" is him accepting this change, and embracing it, taking it as it comes.

so clearly, this change is occurring "for reasons unknown".

"i caught my stride. i flew and flied." is him moving on, going on to different things, and things are going well. except for that

"But my heart, it don’t beat, it don’t beat the way it used to. And my eyes, they don’t see you no more. And my lips, they don’t kiss, they don’t kiss the way they used to, and my eyes don’t recognize you no more."

he doesn't feel the same way about this girl anymore. i guess it's the typical, i'm moving on and you're not part of me anymore thing. only much more stylish, beautiful, and in that amazing Killers kind of way.

the "open chair" is him and the girl sitting down to a little chat and he explains this situation. " if destiny's kind, I've got the rest on my mind" he's telling her that he's got another way to go, and destiny's taking him forth but she's not going with him because he doesn't see her the same way anymore the futures what's in store and he has to leave her in the past.

    thats my interpretation :]

    My Interpretation

I agree that this song definitely refers to a relationship from the past... but I don't get the impression that it refers to a breakup.

Maybe it is the tempo of the song, or the passion in the guy's voice, but it doesn't sound to me like he is telling anyone he doesn't love them anymore... it sounds to me that he is giving a warning to someone he hasn't seen in a while, telling her that he has "grown older and colder" and that he doesn't even know whether he can love her again; but that he would try to...

    Just my two cents.

BTW - this is grown to be my favorite song... ever. The Killers are pretty much amazing.
