Blood Lyrics

Well they encourage your complete cooperation
Send you roses when they think you need to smile
I can't control myself because I don't know how
And they love me for it honestly, I'll be here for a while

So give them blood, blood, gallons of the stuff
Give them all that they can drink and it will never be enough
So give them blood, blood, blood
Grab a glass because there's going to be a flood

A celebrated man amongst the gurneys
They can fix me proper with a bit of luck
The doctors and the nurses they adore me so
But it's really quite alarming ‘cause I'm such an awful fuck (why thank you)

I gave you blood, blood, gallons of the stuff
I gave you all that you can drink and it has never been enough
I gave you blood, blood, blood
I'm the kind of human wreckage that you love

I feel the first two lines are addressing the general regime of everyday life we experience and the need for happiness and sometimes excessive optimism during 'bad times' that is projected upon us within an institution-such as work. It then goes on to show how Gerard is not conforming to (what seems to be) 'society's rules'- perhaps due to some kind of mental disorder where he is unable to completely control/gather himself for the good of others. After all, that usually is the reason for this false sense of 'everything is going to be ok' in regard to the workplace/government- perhaps even amongst friends ect... to 'save face'- with the person still feeling hurt and upset in their own time as they feel they can't within the 'outside world.' The next lines go on to show how he has been sent to a mental institution, as he talks about the nurses who care for him embracing his traits, as opposed to society in general who discouraged them. Due to this, he feels as if treated for his mental disorder in order to help him conform to society will be halted. The chorus then goes on to show how their attempts at 'treating him' are futile via either the actual extraction of blood or the more likely metaphorical extraction of information via counselling represented as blood (as he is 'opening up' to them)- with the 'all that they can drink' line meaning all that they can handle of his mentality within each session, therefore no matter how much he gives/shares- it 'will never be enough.' He then illustrates how he feels as if this treatment is in fact making him worse with the line 'grab a glass because there's going to be a flood'- as soon all of the corruption within his mind due to the disorder will rise to the surface, meaning this could also now refer to actual blood shed (his or others.) The first line of the last verse shows how he has been involved in blood shed and injury many times before (perhaps due to himself)- confirmed by the following line, displaying how he is well acquainted with the doctors and nurses. He then displays sanity and self-awareness in the next line, outlining how others in the rest of society (including himself) would regard him with disgust- as appose to the nurses within the mental institution (probably as he is a good and loveable character compared to others within it)- he is the 'kind of human wreckages that you love!' ;D

Song Meaning

@Aidzzz the whole album is about a guy with cancer, going through chemo. This song is about his treatment and the amount of blood tests they make you have. Your analogy is ridiculous and way off

I think this song could have probably been about Gerard's feelings, but its got too much of a hospital context that I think its more about the patient's experience in the hospital than anything else.

"Well they encourage your complete cooperation Send you roses when they think you need to smile"

I read this as the patient being put off by the saccharine tone of all the doctors and nurses around him as well as the lack of freedom he has in the hospital and,

"I can't control myself because I don't know how And they love me for it honestly, I'll be here for a while"

he also feels like they're only treating him so nicely despite his odd or repellent behaviors possibly brought on by his PTSD(see: mama) because they know he's extremely sick and will likely not make it.

"So give them blood, blood, gallons of the stuff Give them all that they can drink and it will never be enough So give them blood, blood, blood Grab a glass because there's going to be a flood"

"I gave you blood, blood, gallons of the stuff I gave you all that you can drink and it has never been enough I gave you blood, blood, blood I'm the kind of human wreckage that you love"

These two verses also immediately made me think about the patient opening up about his normally closely guarded emotions to the nurses and other patients, and talking about his life to them, but he also finds it so draining he compares it to giving his own blood, and he's uncomfortable by how everyone won't leave him alone and assumes they love him because of the way he'd lay his proverbial heart out on the table for them to mentally pick apart at their own discretion, leaving him vulnerable.

"A celebrated man amongst the gurneys They can fix me proper with a bit of luck The doctors and the nurses they adore me so But it's really quite alarming ‘cause I'm such an awful fuck (why thank you)"

The first line probably refers to how upon learning that the patient was a soldier(see: mama), the other people at the hospital developed respect for him, and the second line is just about his cancer. The third and fourth line is still about the patient expressing his self loathing and not quite understanding why they give him the time of day when his own family probably never did.

Poor guy has some issues!

well i think gerard is metaphorically trying to say how fame and being a celebrity really is, like the fans need more more more of everything they just cant get enough, and the fans are kinda like "blood suckers" and when he says the doctors and the nurses, its like the people who cater to celebs, they love them, they rave about them, even though they dont see how really they are an "awful fuck"

but in the end no matter what he does it will never be enough

no need to post it twice :)

Not Valid

Song Meaning

In a joking sense, this song reminds me of a mental disorder called Fictious Disorder- a disorder where people will fake or exaggerated being sick or injured in order to go to the hospital and get attention as much as possible. To be humorous, then, the lyrics sound like they could be describing a disordered person enjoying his hospital visit.

On a more serious note, I interpret the more literal meaning of the song as this:

It's talking about how society is a bitch. Society expects everyone to live up to ridiculous standards of popularity and beauty. You are required to fit in and live up to their ideals, and if you don't you will be rejected and tormented. On the other hand, if something is wrong with you, the same society that bullies you will turn around and fake it and start acting all sweet. It's all a game they are playing in order to make themselves look good.

So, I think that the guy in the song (not Gerard himself- just the theoretical narrator of the song, a guy who represents many of us frustrated people)- is either subconsciously or consciously trying to get society's attention. This is because he has found that being sick or in danger is the ONLY way to get attention of any kind... And without attention, he feels completely rejected and lonely. Basically, the character is being open and vulnerable to society, admitting his weaknesses. Perhaps he's given up on trying to hide it, because they bully him either way. But he recognizes that society is cruel and will feed off his pain, so he decides to use it to get their attention, rather than just waste away on the sidelines.

However, subconsciously seeking attention through displaying pain openly or acting in desperate ways only brings temporary satisfaction. This seems to be the meaning of the line "it will never be enough." No matter how hard the narrator tried to fit in to society, on the one hand, it didn't work. They made fun of him anyway and mocked his weaknesses, delighting in bullying him and never getting tired of it. Now, on the other hand, the narrator also realizes that his attempt to get compassion through his suffering (or perhaps even just suffering that is not self-imposed, but should get him compassion) is meaningless. The affection and attention society shows a person is either cruelty or bullying (delighting in a victim's misery and pain) OR it is a fake act that is "required" because of proper manners- a compassion that doesn't go deep. Society's compassion is just a shallow thing, and behind it lurks the real disgust society has always had for the "less desirable" people.

I find the last line "the kind of human wreckage that you love" to be sort of bitter and sarcastic. The narrator is mocking the irony of the fact that he only gets attention from mean people by being hurt. And that they actually delight in how much of a struggle it is for him to get their attention, and how much pain he is enduring because of their bullying.

So again, long story short, the song is discussing how society is a bitch.

this song is about when the Patient dies and his family members find a diary of his life in the hospital. the blood is describing how the nurses had to draw blood everyday and also the flowers part "Send you roses when they think you need to smile" this symbolizes his family members giving him get well flowers.

good song.. i think its about someone talking about their family and how the doctors cant figure out what is wrong with them (that is why he keeps saying "So give them blood, blood Gallons of the stuff") because of all the blood they draw for testing... its about how your family supports you but doesnt come to see you. they just send you flowers. i may be putting too much thought into it but thats just an idea

Cover art for Blood lyrics by My Chemical Romance

I think this song is about how "the man" is always asking for more and even when you give everything you have you still must give more and how even though the speaker is depressed and "awful" "the man" loves he/she because "the man can manipulate them more.
