I watch the morning dawn upon your skin
A splinter in the light
It caught and frayed the very heart of us
It's been hiding there inside for all this time
How a sure thing winds up just like this
Clockwork silence only knows

And it's no one's fault
There's no black and white
Only you and me
On this endless night
And as the hours run away
With another life
Oh, darling can't you see it's now or never
It's now or never

Sweeping eggshells still at 3 am
We're trying far too hard
The tattered thought balloons above our heads
Sinking in the weight of all we need to say
Why's and what if's have since long played out
Left us short on happy endings

And it's no one's fault
There's no black and white
Only you and me
On this endless night
And as the hours run away
With another life
Oh, darling can't you see it's now or never
It's now or never

It's now or never
It's now or never

You know that there's so much more
And it's no one's fault
There's no black and white
Only you and me
On our final night
And as the hours run away
With another life
Oh, darling can't you see it's now or never
It's now or never

Obviously it's about a relationship that isn't going so well. Or it appears to be at least. Clockwork silence seems to represent that whatever is wrong, they haven't been communicating. Meaning only silence knows how a "sure thing" winds up unsure. In the chorus, he expresses it's a complicated matter and that no one is at fault. The hours run away with another life, I think means that while they're trying to figure it out, time passes by in another world separate from them.

"Sweeping eggshells at 3 am," is a really profound lyric. Signifying they've been fighting in some sense or another. Or possibly been "walking on eggshells" around each other. They're trying too hard and just not getting through to each other. One person or another needs to say something, but it's not happening. He's saying it's now or never, the damage is done, say it or say goodbye, I think.

Beautiful song! One of my favorites.

This song has such interesting lyrics...I love phrases like "clockwork silence" "sweeping eggshells" and "tattered thought balloons." They hold so much meaning.

I think this song is about being near the end of the something, whether a relationship or something else that is failing in your life and trying to hold on, yet despite everything, it all kind of falls apart anyway. Also, to me this song is about wondering where things went wrong...wondering how something so perfect could end up such a mess. Just my interpretation anyway...

This song is just another one of those "Listen, I'm sorry lets not blame each other and rebuild this relationship" songs. The song sounds so pure and emotional when Groban sings it which gives it an extra depth. He captures the scene well with the simple but symbolic metaphors and similes.

i think its deeper and its about losing someone you love They have died maybe "as the hours run away with another life" "Its now or never" say i love oyu now or maybe ill never get to say it again and "Our final night" its seems so sure if they were just breaking up it wouldnt be so decided.

    My Interpretation

I looooooooove this song!!! I listen to it all the time. Id say its about a relationship thats been tricky and uncomfortable and its their last chance to get things right. But maybe not as he changes that line in the last chorus from

"only you and me on this endless night"

    to,

"only you and me on our final night"

maybe its just irrepairable and maybe its just all about hope they dont have and wishful thinking but thats just my interpretation anyway:) i love Josh and this album to death! Imogen Heap is a genius co-writing it with him

    My Interpretation

I think it's about this girl he loves dying on a hospital bed and he stays up all night, watching her and waiting for her to wake up, telling her not to give up and that there's still so much more to live for.
