Just Friends Lyrics

When will we get, the time to be, just friends?
It's never safe for us, not even in the evening 'cos I've been drinking
Not in the morning, when your shit works
It's always dangerous when everybody's sleeping and I've been thinking: can we be alone, can we be alone?

When will we get, the time to be, just friends?
When will we get, the time to be, just friends?

And though I'm not a saint, but the guilt will kill you if she don't first
I'll never love you like her
Though we need to find the time to just do this shit together before it gets worse
I wanna touch you but that just hurts

When will we get the time to be just, just friends?
When will we get the time to be just friends, just friends?

It’s about a woman who’s asking a man if they can get the time to be “just friends” with no strings attached.

She knows that it’s never safe for them to meet up at night because she’s always drunk and belligerent.

It’s also not safe in the morning or day time, because he can easily serenade her sweet nothings while she is in a good mood and they will end up having sex and ruining what could be a perfectly good relationship – again.

The line “No, I’m not a ashamed, but the guilt will kill you, if she don’t first” – this line alone adds a whole other layer to the relationship. The man is in a relationship. She is telling the man she wouldn’t be ashamed to be more than friends with him, but he will be so riddled with guilt if they do something together, and his girlfriend will be furious if she finds out. This one line contradicts the whole first verse of the song because in the first verse she is saying that she just wants to be friends and not lovers, but in the second she is considering a sexual relationship with this man.

“I’ll never love you like her” - I’m more of a friend to you, I’ll never love you as unconditionally as your girlfriend does.

She goes on to say that they need to find the time to make their friendship work and eliminate the other mess.

“I wanna touch you, but that just hurts” - completely changes the whole mood/structure of the song. Does she love this man? I thought she just wanted to be a friend/fuck buddy with him.

Basically, this woman is having some pretty conflicted feelings that are clashing up against each other. She really doesn’t know what she wants. Amy Winehouse is a brilliant songwriter.

I've been this girl. It's a guy and a girl that can't stay off of each other. He's with somebody else but it never fails every time they are together they always seem to hook up. The line "I wanna touch you but that just hurts" sort of signifies the idea that he's not just a friend but there are real feelings for him. I wish it didn't hit so close to home. Because I've asked the guy "why can't we JUST be friend?" And someone we end up in bed together...

Its happening to me right now. Someone that you still have feelings for and even though you know its wrong you can't be just friends.

i can relate to this.

for me this song is about a girl who knows this guy she loves dearly as a friend, but for some reason they cant their hands off eeach other. He has a girlfriend, and she doesnt want to lose the friendship. she wishes they could just hang out without ending up hooking up. maybe im just seeing it though my own situation, but this is what i think of.

I think this song is definitely about Blake like pretty much all her songs on Back to Black. I think its about the period when they first broke up and he went back to his old girlfriend and Amy is saying how hard it is between them now because she's wondering when they'll be just friends instead of constantly hooking up. They hookup when she thinks too much about it or is drunk or in the morning when he has morning wood or if they are hanging out with friends and everyone's sleep. Pretty much anytime they are alone together and she's saying she knows it hurts him to do that to his girl (because I think he broke up with Amy because she kept cheating on him) so they try to restrain themselves from fooling around but its hard. Beautiful song that I'm just starting to appreciate.

An old relationship ended and now friends? New relationship sees her as a threat? Realistic emotion in this - surely relateable to most ? xx

Yeah, or it could be about wanting a friend who's in a relationship, perhaps?

"but the guilt will kill you if she don't first,"..."we need to find the time to just do this shit together before it gets worse" etc...

I Think she went to fast in a relationship and ended up fucking the guy now everytime their around each other they have sex.She wants to start over and be just friends, but she cant. She keeps asking herself "can we be alone?"-can they be alone without fucking each other.

doesnt it go "and no im not ashamed" not "i know im not a saint"?

I think its about her liking a guy who's in a relationship and he's cheating on his partner with her but she knows its wrong.

The horn section in this song is pretty perfect, and boy I bet a lot of people can relate to this song.

i think its about being in a relationship with someone, that ending and them getting someone else, but the two are still sleeping together because they still have something for each other, they cant be 'just friends'.
