Opium of the People Lyrics

Watch those idiosyncrasies
Watch all the idiots fall on me
Getting out of ways to get outta the way
Take another shot just to stay the same
But I need some balance - Back it off
Fill your lungs 'til it makes you cough
Tell me everything's gonna be alright
'Cause I don't think I'll make it through tonight

The only way - Is all the way

Oh - my - God
It's judgement day and I'm not prepared
Everybody out there's running scared
So - Take a little bit off the top
I don't care, just make it stop

I won't give another soul... to you
I won't give another life... to you
You have to stop
Stop!

Do one thing and say something cryptic
But the styles always clash
One thing I know for sure
The hypothetical won't work anymore
One wrong move and they will pound!
My nails are tight inside my wrists
This sacrament is sacrilege and sentimental
Deity experimental - Faith is accidental

I won't give another soul... to you
I won't give another life... to you
I won't give another thought... to you
I won't give anymore of my hope... to you

The song's title could have been taken from a Karl Marx quote "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people." Although, it seems that because Corey is more of a humanist and isn't religous, it's a cynical look at religon and how we huddle around blindfaith to find meaning and sometimes that gets carried over into the idiotic side of humanity and hysteria all in the name of faith.

Karl Marx: "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, the soul of the soulless environment. it is the opium of the people"

religion maybe? i'm not sure, but that quote popped into my head.

My interpretation is that you gotta go all the way, dont half ass anything. "Fill your lungs till it makes you cough" it is like saying jump in the water with both feet, love like you've never loved, try harder than you can imagine, or, as the lyrics continue to say, "The only way is all the way". This song has fantastic lyrics.

I love this song. Then again, I love all of them I listen to, BUT, I always skip to this one when I listen to the cd.

My favriote part is when it goes "Oh-my-god It's judgement day and I'm not prepared Everybody out there's running scared So - Take a little bit off the top I don't care, just make it stop!"

Damn. Now it's stuck in my head. Grr.

He's talking about you should find out what you belive in, not believe what you are told to. He lives his life to the fullest, (a satanistic belief) and he feels that there is no "Judgement day". It's all about finding what you believe and being told that if you don't think what someone else believes is right, then don't believe it. You don't go to hell if you don't believe in it.

this song has allot of big words in it but when you break it down and translate it, its like this:

This sacrament [holy thing] is sacrilege [created unholy] and sentimental [pleasing to the emotions only]

Deity experimental; the essential nature of being a god founded on experience

so it is definatly about religion. maybe about being in a cult where the worshipee is just doing it to control people. This song also reminds me of a book i read recently, titled "1984". maybe youve heard of it. anyway, it is about this freak future world where everyone is brain washed into worshiping and obeying the government which is run by someone called "big brother" and the song sounds like it could be from the main charector's point of view, who sees what a bunch of bullshit big brother is and he rebels against him by screwing his girl friend a million times (the only way is all the way), which is against the law in that futuristic world. "one wrong move and they will pound" could come from the fact that in the society he lives in, do one wrong thing and your dead. or worse. there are a bunch of other parts of the song that sound like 1984 but my fingers are starting to hurt.
