Ungodly Hour Lyrics

Don't talk, don't say a thing
Cause your eyes they tell me more than your words
Don't go, don't leave me now
Cause they say the best way out is through

And I am short on words knowing what's occurred
She begins to leave because of me

Her bag is now much heavier
I wish that I could carry her
But this is our ungodly hour

I know you're leaving now
Cause I held on to my way tightly
Stay still until you know
Tomorrow finds the best way out is through

And I am short on words knowing what's occurred
She begins to leave because of me

Her bag is now much heavier
I wish that I could carry her
But this is our ungodly hour

I don't quite see why everyone is referring to this as some sort of ending love story. There are other relationships in life as well. I listened to this song a lot when my closest friend had told me about a very personal thing that she had to deal with in her everyday life. There wasn't really anything I could say or do to help her, I could just stand beside and watch. After this she started to avoid me, the fact that I knew this about her that she hadn't told anyone else made her panic. And I felt so frustrated, because I wished so badly that there would be something I could do. We didn't talk to each other, because there was nothing to say anymore. But everytime our eyes met, there was so much more to every look than we could have possibly said by words. And all I want is to be able to lift this huge weight off of her tiny little shoulders. But I can't, and it kills me inside. I'd like to just give this song to her so that she would understand that I will always be there for her, no matter what happens.

Don't talk, don't say a thing Cause your eyes they tell me more than your words **I think this means that she's letting her pain speak words that she doesn't mean - and he can see in her eyes that she doesn't want to leave and that she still loves him.

Don't go, don't leave me now Cause they say the best way out is through **the best way out of the problem is getting through it together. He's saying "don't leave - lets work through this together"

And I am short on words knowing what's occurred She begins to leave because of me **He realizes that its his fault "because of me" and like most men he doesn't know what to say to make things right.

Her bag is now much heavier He's now contributed to her "baggage" I wish that I could carry her He wants take away the weight that he and others before him have put on her heart/mind - and carry her to ease this pain.

But this is our ungodly hour **it's their darkest moment - painful because deep down they don't want to part.

I know you're leaving now Cause I held on to my way tightly he didn't change and this was what pushed her out the door. He was stubborn and took her for granted. Stay still until you know Don't leave until you're sure this is what you want - because he can see in her eyes that she doesn't want to leave. "stay still" don't do anything drastic until you feel in your heart that you want to leave. Tomorrow finds the best way out is through **"tomorrow" is figuratively just holding on because "this too shall pass" and we will get through this

As with 'Happiness' I hadn't listened to this song much from this album when I first got it.

However, after listening through the album a few more times I've found that I do actually like this song a lot more than I did when I first heard it.

It's very different for the Fray; a lot more sombre than most of their other music.

I agree that it can be interpretted as a boy and girl in the midst of a painful break up in which neither are admitting their faults.

However, this song also reminds me a lot of the current 90210 series; especially of the storyline of Adrianna and her pregnancy.

Where it says 'her bag is now much heavier' it reminds me of the burden that is now on that character.

This isn't just applicable to the programme, but also to real life, and to anyone who finds themself in that same situation.

This is similar to Skins S2 in which Jal becomes pregnant, and the advisor tells her that she has a lot to carry, and is weighed down.

The overall song itself other than this line could be speaking of the narrator's feelings about what has happened, and the inability he has to cope - like Navid with Adrianna in 90210.

Just a suggested and more unlikely meaning to this song, however that is what it reminds me of.

It's a beautiful song and really slow; befitting of the album overall.

Joe King's voice is just as amazing as Isaac's.

I have a slightly different idea to this song; that this song is about a guy who has had his heartbroken by a girl he loved, but he moved on to a new relationship. However, this relationship is failing or going slow because he just can't get over, and move on from, the previous girl.

"Don't talk, don't say a thing Cause your eyes they tell me more than your words"

This is from the girl's perspective; she can see in his eyes that something is wrong.

"Don't go, don't leave me now Cause they say the best way out is through"

The guy talking; I don't want you to leave me, because I think the only way I'm going to move on from her is to be with you. Please don't leave.

"And I am short on words knowing what's occurred She begins to leave because of me"

She leaves, knowing that he can't give her his all.

"Her bag is now much heavier I wish that I could carry her But this is our ungodly hour"

She'll now have the baggage of their failed relationship. He wishes he could give her everything, but it's not the right time.

That's what I'm taking from the song anyway :)

Let me start off by saying that this song is just so beautiful ♥ The Fray is my favorite band and, everytime i hear this song, I just want to light up a candle and rock side to side.

I first heard it on an episode of "The Vampire Diaries" (4x02) the ending scene where they are lighting lanterns, sending them up into the sky, to commemorate all the lives they have lost close to them.

And, in my own opinion, that's exactly what I think this song means.

A guy has passed away, and he looks over this girl. "Her bag is now much heavier/ I wish that I could carry her." She is struggling with this baggage, and he's nowhere around to help her with it. He has to look over her, and he can't do anything about the pain that she is going through. Ungodly hour is anytime past midnight where, they say, the spirits come out. And I'm guessing that's the time he can walk beside her until he leaves when the sun rises.

--I would definatley recommend looking up "Ungodly Hour The Vampire Diaries" on youtube. Even if you don't watch the show, it's a touching scene where Damon is in the cememtery talking to his best friend, Alalaric's, grave. I cried while watching it, (mostly because Alaric was my favorite character) but also because Alaric is sitting on a bench right behind him. Damon can't see him because he is a ghost, but he is watching Damon recite a quite lengthy, but tearjerking, speech. If you truly want to know what this song means, I'd watch that scene (:

Hope this helped.

My Interpretation
Cover art for Ungodly Hour lyrics by Fray, The

I think this is about a boy and girl who have gotten into a fight

He realizes his mistake but cant/wont say anything

"And I am short on words knowing what's occurred She begins to leave because of me"

I know you're leaving now Cause I held on to my way tightly

And this is what he wishes he could say but cant

This song is so beautiful and sad.

I think others are right in that it is about a fight/breakup, but I feel that it is larger than not being able to admit a mistake.

"Cause I held on to my way tightly"

The above line evokes a sense of his unwillingness to listen/change over a long period of time (perhaps their entire relationship). The result is their ungodly hour.

Not Valid

I agree but I think that this about a boy and girl that got in a fight and the boy doesnt think he is wrong so we wont apologize for what he was said to do or actually did becasue he thinks he has done no wrong. "And I am short on words knowing what's occurred, She begins to leave because of me" I think this is talking about him being left and he is short that she would leave him because of what he might have done, but he stands firm and believes that he has truly done no wrong. "Her bag is now much heavier" think this is just talking about things because of what has happened between them. Talking about their "Ungodly Hour" think this just means about how as everything comes to an end, it doesnt matter who was right and who was wrong cause now for whatever reason they are both left alone.

I think we sumed up the song pretty well. It's about a argument that the boy and the girl have. He said something that he won't say sorry for and she leaves. But he hopes that tomorrw will be diffrent and they can make-up and say sorry.
