This is a song for a son
This is a song for a sailor
The best I ever had
This is a song for a kid
This is a song for a tailor
Who stitched up my old hearts
Who stitched up my old hearts

And I
I am one of many, many more to come
Many more to come
I am one of many, many more to come
Many more to come

This is a song for a dove
This is a song for a blown out bird
The kind that don't return to the nest
This is a song for a star
This is a song for a space invader
Who flew into the sun
Never to return
Never to return

I am one of many, many more to come
Many more to come
I am one of many more, many more to come
Many more to come

This is a song for a son
This is a song for a sailor
The son I never had
He sailed without a map
This is a song for that kid
This is a song for that tailor
Who stitched up my old hearts
Before I broke it all
All apart

I am one of many, many more to come
Many more to come
I am one of many more, many more to come
Many more to come

Ye daughters of the revolution
Carry back your sons
Carry them back home

Ye daughters of the revolution
Carry back your sons home

This is a song for a son
This is a song for a sailor
The best I ever had
He sailed without a map

this is a surprisingly good song... its got some hard rock parts but it sounds more mature than their older stuff. i just hope billy can still scream like he did on their old stuff. and was anybody else reminded of "i am one", the first song on their first album, when he says "i am one of many more to come"?

    The line:

"I am one of many more to come"

While reminding me of "I am One" off of Gish, to me it reminds me more of the chorus

"Home, let the word spill from my mouth Love, love is everything I want I'm one of many more to come Love, love is everything I want"

From the song "Home" off of Machina II: Friends and Enemies of Modern Music.

It’s clearly a love song for some guy, just like Spaceboy etc.
Billy often gives totally bill)&85, answers when asked about songs and albums, so you have to take his music on its own and take what u will from it -but this is one of the clearest ones there are.

    My Interpretation

The songs seems to be about regretting not having a son and what that son could have been and the instruction for mothers to love theirs and to protect them. The narrator says that he is one of many more to come. It seems that there is something that caused him not to be a father and that it has happened to many more and that he won't be the last. It seems to be the degradation of society in a way. Idk, that's just what I take from it.

the songs about how billy found a young talanted drummer that gave him hope that someday the smashing pumpkins can hit mainstream again.

This is a song for a son This is a song for a sailor The best I ever had He sailed without map This is a song for a kid This is the song for a tailor Who stitched up my old heart Who stitched up my old heart Before I broke it all apart

Billy felt disappointed that the Smashing Pumpkins (Billy, James, D'Arcy, and Jimmy couldn't all be together as one). This put Billy in a position to seek young unknown talents that want to rise and shine. After some drinks it's like you can fell what Bi;;y's saying. Freakin awesome song.

This is clearly about his sexual relationship with a much younger sailor--This is a song for a sailor The best (sailor) I ever had.

billy said this song is about not having any kids and also that he thought of his relationship with his father... so im thinking it could be about the fact that he wants kids but doesnt want to be like his father so he never ends up having any.

He plays with allegory in this song. He says "this is a song for a dove... blown up bird... a star... a space invader" the instrumental parts flirt obviously with influences from Led Zeppelin, and adds to a feeling of musical revival in the smashing pumpkins music. The lingering and haunting synthesisers speak of longing on Corgan's part, linking to the aforementioned meaning of being an adult in a society, aging and not having children, whilst harbouring some angst with his relationship with his father. Before in his music he adopted a feeling of hiding lyrical meaning from the content of the song, as was the style of some songwriters of the alternative music scene, from Nirvana to Pearl Jam. This is however a move away, in my view, of past angst, and is a perfect opening into his new and more honest album.
