Don't Believe a Word (Album version) Lyrics
Incriminating notes on a paper chain
Did you ever get the feeling that you've been cheated?
I wanna bust out, I've not been defeated
The all strong bones they hold no water
Got the big fake smile, this gets harder
Time had wound down and now we've been cached
Because half measures are all half-assed!
How did we ever end up this way?
And I've gone numb in disarray
Cultivating our ignorance
Didn't we have some standards once?
I hate you and your cowboy boots
Oh you wanted clever, we settled for stupid
And threw it all away so indiscreet
Like a bad boy afraid he's a dirty little cheat
It's a shallow vicious state of mind
Like an angry child getting dumped online
Give me back my photos, will you?
You fucking whore I'll kill you!
Just keep on breathing
'Cause pretty soon that good King George
Will wake up screamin'
Some dull ache-replace the stain
Rap stars brag about shooting each other?
What ever happened to brother, Brother?
We like thugs when they attack and
We like crime when it's black on black and
Isn't this you, cruel-hearted fake?
Isn't this more than you can take!
Just walk on by
'Cause this moment will pass
And then we all can go get high
Don't believe it
Just keep on dreaming
'Cause pretty soon that good King George
Will wake up screamin'
Wake up screamin'
I hope we don't get fooled again
All sensation makes no sense
You got some insane confidence
I can't find myself, I can't change the station
In this corporate sedative pity nation
Scandalize now with such ease
America give me back my keys
Sanity blows a soldier squeeze
Trigger mark fake enemies
We're all alive and all alone
'Til you come home
Bring 'em home
Just keep on breathing
'Cause pretty soon that good King George
Will wake up screamin'
Just keep on dreaming)

I'm assuming that bandana.mama said "the line about Good King George is obvious" he/she meant that it was referring to George Bush (as the rest of the song is). I disagree, as the song is a comment on the state of America at the moment disarray, crime etc. i believe "Good King George" is referring to King George III who was the British monarch at the time of the American War of Independence, possibly meaning he'll wake up screaming (In his grave) "oh dear look what they've done, we really shouldn't have let them win it - look at the mess they've left". Just a thought :)
Samboraisgod...thats the point. Good king george is a double reference just like alot of other 3eb song meanings...its talking about how Bush is like George III...after the revolution he had a huge fall from grace and SJ is saying the same thign will happen to Bush...

I love The Who reference near the beginning of the last verse
"I hope we don't get fooled again"
i love the* "the who" reference
i love the* "the who" reference

"i hate you down to your boots" was the cutest line in this song for me! "cowboy boots" just isn't the same.... :(

Is it just me, or are a lot of these lyrics wrong?
"Oh you wanted clever, we settled for stupid And threw it all away so indiscreet Like a bad boy afraid he's a dirty little cheat"
=
"Though we wanted clever, we settled for stupid. You threw it all away, so indiscreet Like a bad boyfriend, he's a dirty little cheat"
"Round up all the big lesbians"

"Round up all the big linchpins"

=
"Send in loads of soldiers please, to trip up our fake enemies We're all abroad and all alone"
Just to name a few

Ha ha, the meaning of this song is VERY simple. It's about SJ's hatred and disgust with George W. Bush.
"Incriminating notes on a paper chain" and the "feeling" that we've "been cheated" refer to the questionable elections.
"Time winding down" and "half-measures" refer to how the investigations were only half-assed and never really followed up with.
The stuff about "standards", "cowboy boots", and wanting "clever" but settling "for stupid" are just straight-up knocks at W.
The chorus's lines about "walk on by" and "keep breathing" probably refer to all of the scare tactics after 9-11. We're supposed to be freaked out by Threat Levels and suggestions of bio-weapons.
And, of course, the line about "Good King George" is obvious.
The lines about thugs and crime mock W.'s weak responses to mundane, state and city-level concerns.
When the chorus mentions "this moment will pass", he's talking about how W.'s run is almost up.
The refrain is SJ's plea for people to take a closer look. The lynch pins are the political talking points and the major issues that really matter, instead of the nonsense and mud-slinging that we can be easily distracted by. "Hope we don't get fooled again"
SJ's expresses his disgust with the portions of America which adore and support W. when he mentions the "cold, quick-sell-out, hillbilly nation"
The ending of the refrain mentions sand, soldiers, and "fake enemies". He closes it with a plea to bring the soldiers home.
I thought this was a WONDERFUL political song, however, the album Ursa Major was delayed so long that Bush was out of office when the album was released, so the point never really got across. Bummer.
Or any other person.
Or any other person.

"what ever happened to brother, brother?" is a marvin gaye reference!
