Well, in my opinion this song is about being a young & maybe a little naive &/or introverted girl and finding yourself loving a man who is at first very charming, carefree & outgoing, and seems at first to be without limits, as in
"There was a time
you opened up every doorway
you didn't mind if everything
wasn't your way"
then that man starts to gradually become more introverted & shows their more possessive/obsessive side to you as the relationship progresses, even while they keep up the appearance of being carefree & outgoing to everyone else,
"Don't pull away
that goes against what you told me
I look in your eyes
I realize what you've sold me
is love in a vacuum"
so you confront them about the way they're acting and of course they deny it,
"I think you've changed
but you insist that
that's not true"
quite possibly they are an addict of some sort, my guess would be cocaine, &/or showing very obsessive behavior towards you (early on in the video for this song we see the man hanging a picture up, it is a very large portrait of Aimee & it is prominently displayed in his/their apartment for the duration of the song), thus their "love in a vacuum",
"You look so strange, so distant
that you're hardly you
Now I can see
how you have been acting different
You say it's me
but I know
that it isn't
it's love in a vacuum"
but still you are in love with them and don't want to leave them and you know that they are truly in love with you and they don't want you to leave them either, maybe they are convinced you can save them from themself, maybe they are so broken that the possibility of an overdose &/or suicide attempt is very real and you want to get through to them that their behavior not only dangerous but it is also just pissing you off and if they don't wise up they run the risk of loosing you, as in the lines
"You will be lonely
if you leave me alone", so you want to save them but can't get through to them due to the addiction &/or emotional problems they have,
"Love in a vacuum
and that's not enough
love in a vacuum
You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
You will be lonely
if you leave me alone
You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
it's just not enough"
you want them to understand that the love they are giving you is not enough when it is filtered through the vacuum of their drug addiction &/or emotional impairment,
"You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
it's just not enough
and just wait
you will be lonely
Love in a vacuum
Love in a vacuum
and that's not enough
Love in a vacuum".
'Love In A Vacuum' for me is a hauntingly truthful acute argument on the loneliness of obsession and almost inevitable loss of love that follows people who are broken in some way or another; the obsessives, the coke heads, the drunks, addicts or the just-plain-old emotionally broken; a razor sharp, lyrically driven, deceptively poppy, yet ultimately-depressing-in-the-best-way song.
Quintessential Aimee Mann.
I can't go any further then this
I want you so badly, it's my biggest wish
I spent my time just thinkin thinkin thinkin bout you
every single day yes, i'm really missin' missin' you
and all those things we use to use to use to do
hey girl, wuz up, it use to be just me and you
i spent my time just thinkin thinkin thinkin bout you
every single day, yes i'm really missin missin you
and all those things we use to use to use to do
hey girl wuz up, wuz up, wuz up, wuz up
can you meet me halfway? right at the borderline?
that's where i'm gonna wait, for you
i'll be lookin out, night n'day
took my heart to the limit, and this is where i'll stay
I can't go any further then this
I want you so bad it's my only wish

across the universe i go to other galaxies
just tell me where you want, just tell me where you wanna to meet
i navigate myself myself to take me where you be
cause girl i want, i, i, i want you right now
i travel uptown (town) i travel downtown
i wanna to have you around (round) like every single day
i love you alway..way
can you meet me half way (I'll meet you halfway)

i will try, until i die, for you and i, for you and i, for for you and i,
for for you and i, for for you and i, for you and i

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

He certainly did earn that reputation.
Fortnight

The song 'Fortnight' by Taylor Swift and Post Malone tells a story about strong feelings, complicated relationships, and secret wishes. It talks about love, betrayal, and wanting someone who doesn't feel the same. The word 'fortnight' shows short-lived happiness and guilty pleasures, leading to sadness. It shows how messy relationships can be and the results of hiding emotions. “I was supposed to be sent away / But they forgot to come and get me,” she kickstarts the song in the first verse with lines suggesting an admission to a hospital for people with mental illnesses. She goes in the verse admitting her lover is the reason why she is like this. In the chorus, she sings about their time in love and reflects on how he has now settled with someone else. “I took the miracle move-on drug, the effects were temporary / And I love you, it’s ruining my life,” on the second verse she details her struggles to forget about him and the negative effects of her failure. “Thought of callin’ ya, but you won’t pick up / ‘Nother fortnight lost in America,” Post Malone sings in the outro.

This is about bronies. They communicate by stomping.
I think its about two people in a relationship who've had a fight that could tear them apart and need each other to "meet halfway" - aka compromise or try harder at fixing things.
I also think its a part of the song where the girl is willing to compromise (the chorus), and the guy is only just realizing what he could loose if he chooses to be stubborn/lazy (I spent my time just thinking, thinking, thinking about you/Every single day yes, I'm really missing, missing you/And all those things we use to, use to, use to do).
it take 2 for love. she's waiting to him to catch up. b/c shes afraid if she keeps loving him more she might get hurt. so shes waiting for him to catch up on her love. its a cute song.
I think it's about two people who once had a meaningful relationship with each other (could be a friendship or more intimate) and overtime there was a disconnect between the two. He's telling her how much he misses her and how he wants her around and she's reaching out to him saying I'm doing my part; meet me half way, and he's claiming he is too (by saying he's willing to travel to all these different, and in some cases exaggerated places to reach her) but really it's a bunch of smoke and mirrors. At one point he even says "Tell me where you wanna meet" as if she hasn't been saying the entire time.
I think it is defintely about compromise in a relationship. Waiting at the borderline is expressing she is waiting at the 1/2 way mark.
I think he could be all talk but no action. Sometimes men say so much and sweep a woman off her feet initially but then when you realize it, you can not go any further with the relationship. Some men can not go past that point and it is like being in two seperate realities.
Also could be a man who is over the top and wants way to much from the relationship, expressing to the woman needs she can not live up too.
But I think it is definitely about two people who are in love but are at a cross road and they are being stubborn. More so the man because she is the one asking to meet her half way...lying alone in a paradise that they could be in if their was compromise. They are both suffering none the less and want to be with one another. But in love wanting to be with someone is not always a healthy desire, especially if there is lack of balance. :)
This is a TUNE! I love this song, one of the best on the album!
too good!
First off, awesome song.
Next, the meaning. I'll take a shot in the dark with this one. I'm thinking it could be about friends, and it was perhaps turning into something more (For the sake of conversation I'll assume Fergie's the girl's POV and so forth), and the girl felt it. She confesses her feelings/devotion to him and the guy has no idea how to react, so they fall out for a while.
The guy realises he loves and misses her, ("I spent my time just thinkin thinkin thinkin bout you, every single day yes, I'm really missin' missin' you") but is perhaps a little afraid to make the leap. The girl really wants them to be together, but there's only so much she can do ("Took my heart to the limit, and this is where I'll stay, I can't go any further than this, I want you so bad it's my only wish").
All she can really hope now is that he'll get off his pedestal and meet her halfway. In the meantime, she'll be waiting.
This song samples both "When You Were Young" by The Killers and "Maps" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs if I'm not mistaken... right?
you're so right! they are sampling the exact music from both songs. i really hope they give the killers and yyy's credit for that..

the music sucked me into this song.. and now i see why, they tried to reproduce what the indie greats put out. and they did a good job with this song but it still feels really weird for me to hear something like this come out of the black eyed peas. it isn't their style..

and as for the msg of the song.. i agree with shelly. simply put, one partner has made all the effort they can make.. the other one has to follow through in order for the relationship to progress.
omg i though the same thing the first time i heard the song, im an indie rocker and i think bep made a great song with those pieces from the killers and yyys. I think the song is about a couple wantin to be together AGAIN, thats why she says took my hearto the limit, and he goes like im really missin missin you. Absolutely love this song.
Check out the intros to this song and "Time After Time", by Cyndi Lauper. Strangely similar.
i would think it would mean meeting halfway to fall in love cause it takes two to fall in love and you have to meet in the middle.... that's just what i got first time listening to it.
it doesn't take 2 to fall in love
i definitely agree with shelly247's interpretation, which ironically describes my life at this very moment.
