How the time passed away, all the trouble that we gave
And all those days we spent out by the lake
Has it all gone to waste? All the promises we made
One by one they vanish just the same

Of all the things I still remember
Summer's never looked the same
The years go by and time just seems to fly
But the memories remain

In the middle of September we'd still play out in the rain
Nothing to lose but everything to gain
Reflecting now on how things could've been
It was worth it in the end

Now it all seems so clear, there's nothing left to fear
So we made our way by finding what was real
Now the days are so long that summer's moving on
We reach for something that's already gone, yeah

Of all the things I still remember
Summer's never looked the same
The years go by and time just seems to fly
But the memories remain

In the middle of September we'd still play out in the rain
Nothing to lose but everything to gain
Reflecting now on how things could've been
It was worth it in the end

Yeah, we knew we had to leave this town (we knew we had to leave this town)
But we never knew when and we never knew how (we never knew how)
We would end up here the way we are
Yeah, we knew we had to leave this town (we knew we had to leave this town)
But we never knew when and we never knew how (we never knew how)

Of all the things I still remember
Summer's never looked the same
The years go by and time just seems to fly
But the memories remain

In the middle of September we'd still play out in the rain
Nothing to lose but everything to gain
Reflecting now on how things could've been
It was worth it in the end

This is my favorite song of his He does not have a bad song at all.
But this one means the most to me. We Would all like to go back to some time in the past weather is to change an event or just to meet someone again or back to a memory of a time you enjoy.

This song has so much meaning for me. I have only ever had one girlfriend and we met and hung out for the first time in the middle of September (the 14th to be exact). Although it was just a little under two years ago, I still long for those days of September to come back. It was such an amazing time; raw, pure, mysterious emotion.

"Now the days are so long that summer's moving on, We reach for something that's already gone." I still think about that day in September all the time. I am searching for something that is already gone. All I want is to go back, but the days are gone forever.

"The years go by and time just seems to fly by, But the memories remain" Time will not slow down and with each passing day that day in September bacomes embedded ever more deeply in the past. However, I will always have the memories. I will cling to them forever.

    Memory

I was first drawn to this song by its title, "September." It was more poignant than I expected.

My brother and I didn't get along until a few years ago, and the summer of 2008 was the first time we had lived in the same area since I was 8 years old (some 13 years previous). I always knew the memories of that summer would be particularly vivid, as it was when he and I truly became best friends.

On September 3, 2008, my dear brother, my only sibling, died unexpectedly. It was the second day of my college classes, and I thought about calling him all day before I heard the news.

"Now the days are so long that summer's moving on We reach for something that's already gone

Of all the things I still remember Summer's never looked the same The years go by and time just seems to fly by But the memories remain

We knew we had to leave this town But we never knew when and we never knew how"

I will forever grasp for something that's already gone, and those memories before that September will forever be bittersweet. He was the one who pushed me to leave this town, and my college town. I do it now in memory of him. I hope he's proud.

This song is beautiful and hands down my favorite song Daughtry has ever come out with to date for 2 reasons.

I can personally relate to this song extremely well. A few years back I had my first serious relationship and it ended in september and I was heart broken. I just reminisce about the good times we had all the time. Also, about a week after that breakup, my brother (whom I'm very close with), left to serve in Irap for a year. And it left me so lost and I was miserable. A year later in September, one of my closest friends became severly ill from brain cancer and he passed away.

But besides how I can relate to the song, I think the lyrics were meant to say one last goodbye. To me, this is the singer looking back to his first love a few years ago. He fell completely in love with her that summer and he wanted it to last forever. They had nothing but love and wanted to make the best of the relationship. When the fell in love, they knew that eventually they would have to leave each other for some reason but they were taking it day by day. The time came for them to separate at the end of that summer. They tried their hardest to keep the relationship going but they just couldn't. They came to a realization that there was no way to keep the love alive when they were so far apart, so they moved on. Each year when summer comes around, though, he remembers how perfect that one summer was and how it can never be just as it was. And although they couldn't stay together, he looks back to think about how things could have been and that everything turned out alright after all and he can officially move on from her now.

I know I over analyze but that pretty much sums up the love story I think this song truly is. I love this song and Daughtry (:

    Song Meaning

I think the meaning of this is about how he had so many good times with someone summer romance but as time goes by he questioning weather it still there or its fading away. But the he will always carry the memories with him and they had "nothing to lose but everything to gain" is saying they couldnt have lost anything but made something special like a relationship or a great friendship and he saying that all of that "it was worth it in the end" they are still on and happy

    Memory

I relate to this song so much. I entered into one of the most wonderful relationships I ever had this summer. The last day of summer, she broke up with me, leaving me heartbroken. Now summer never will look the same without her.

About growing up in a small town and wanting to get out and make something of yourself but still remembering and treasuring all the memories that will never leave you

So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new. This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus. Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness". The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1. All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy. And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns) There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.

Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Holiday

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
