Resistance Lyrics
And are we out of sight?
Or will our world come tumblin' down?
Will they find our hiding place?
Is this our last embrace?
Or will the walls start caving in?
But it should've been right
Let our hearts ignite
Are we digging a hole?
This is outta control
It could never last
Must erase it fast
But it could've been right
(It could be wrong, could be)
They keep us apart and they won't stop breaking us down
And hold me, our lips must always be sealed
Just to see you smile again
Quell your prayers for love and peace
You'll wake the thought police
We can hide the truth inside
But it should've been right
Let our hearts ignite
Are we digging a hole?
This is outta control
It could never last
Must erase it fast
But it could've been right
(It could be wrong, could be)
They keep us apart and won't stop breaking us down
And hold me, our lips must always be sealed
We can't pretend, we must run
We must run It's time to run ..
Take us away from here
Protect us from further harm
Resistance

It's obviously straight from Nineteen Eighty-Four. I mean "Quell your prayers for love and peace / You'll wake the thought police / We can hide the truth inside," is obvious, and I'd say the "Love is our resistance / They keep us apart and won't stop breaking us down" bit is about Winston and Julia's love in the book, and their experience in the Ministry of Love and Room 101. Seems most of this album was inspired by 1984...

It's thought police..Far police? lol that doesnt even make any sense... I recommend you go and read the George Orwell book 1984,as pointed out this whole album, and in particular this song, was obviously greatly inspired by one of the greatest literary works of our time

exactly. "love is our resistance" Julia's goal, especially, was to resist The Party in as many small ways as possible, and their love was the biggest accomplishment...

Some of the interpretations I've read are interesting but this is without a doubt a reference to 1984. Warning: I may spoil some of the book's plot
"Is your secret safe tonight? And are we out of sight?"
The secret is Winston and Julia's love affair and in order to be together they must be away from the watchful eye of Big Brother.
"Will they find our hiding place? Is this our last embrace?"
This refers to their hideout above Mr. Charrington's shop and how each time they make love there they wonder when they will be discovered.
"(It could be wrong, could be wrong) But it should've been right Let our hearts ignite Are we digging a hole? This is outta control It could never last Must erase it fast But it could've been right (It could be wrong, could be)"
At one point Winston questions his relationship with Julia saying, "Has it ever occurred to you that the best thing for us to do would be to simply walk out of here before its too late, and never see each other again?" Julia responds to this with, "Yes, dear, it has occurred to me, several times. But I'm not going to do it all the same." To which Winston then responds, "We may be together for another six months-a year-there's no knowing." Winston is concerned about their safety but at the same time he feels so much love for Julia that he chooses to risk his life to be with her.
"Love is our resistance They keep us apart and they won't stop breaking us down And hold me, our lips must always be sealed"
When Winston and Julia are first making love he remarks, "Their embrace had been a battle, the climax a victory. It was a blow struck against the party. It was a political act." The party is constantly seeking to eradicate all sexual pleasure, and the love making between Winston and Julia is there way of resisting the totalitarian regime.
The next two lines are referring to their capture and torture at the hands of the Thought Police. Despite the fact that they are constantly beaten and forced to confess to crimes they still attempt to hold onto their love.
"If we live our life in fear I'll wait a thousand years Just to see you smile again Quell your prayers for love and peace You'll wake the thought police We can hide the truth inside"
Winston wishes that he and Julia could be together in a different world where they could be together without worry. At the same time he constantly worries about waking the Thought Police (obvious reference) and hopes that they can continue their affair without showing outward emotion in public.
"The night has reached its end We can't pretend, we must run We must run It's time to run .. Take us away from here Protect us from further harm Resistance"
I'm stumped on this part of the song. It could be a reference to their capture and that they can now no longer pretend everything will work out for the better. It could also be a reference to the end of the book when they see each other for the last time. The night representing that their relationship has passed, and now they must move on and try to avoid more torture or death at the hands of the party. That's just a guess though and I'd love to hear opinions on this last part.
Winston loved Big Brother and is killed at the end of the book-

'He was walking down the white-tiled corridor, with the feeling of walking in sunlight, and an armed guard at his back. The long-hoped-for bullet was entering his brain.'

Maybe the running and protection is his death. He actually wanted it, and anything the party wanted. He was completely broken

This song has themes that relate to 1984. However, it's actually concerning our current state of the world and the powers that manipulate it.
"Is your secret safe tonight? And are we out of sight? Or will our world come tumblin' down? Will they find our hiding place? Is this our last embrace? Or will the walls start caving in?"
Matt is singing about how the occult powers are watching us and want to vanquish any sort of resistance or persons that are "AWAKE" from the mind control that this earth is conditioned with. Are we out of sight? Will they find us? The embrace spoken of is the embrace of truth and resistance against what is commonly referred to as the "illuminati" or "New World Order." Conspiracy theories and themes of global conspiracy encompass 75% of this album, including the lyrics of their past works. Since "Showbiz," this common theme has been present.
"Quell your prayers for love and peace You'll wake the thought police We can hide the truth inside"
The New World Order wants you to be nationalistic, brainwashed, and fully subservient. Any thoughts of human unity, love, and peace will stagnate the current progress towards globalism and full control of the human race. Hiding the truth inside - remaining hidden, but keeping alive an underground awareness, or resistance, from this evil.
"Love is our resistance They keep us apart and they won't stop breaking us down And hold me, our lips must always be sealed"
They won't stop breaking us down with mind control through media and propaganda. Love should be replaced with self-centeredness and materialism, among other things such as religious extremism, and right-wing nationalism/militarism - promoting the idea that War is Good. Love is the opposite of these things.
There are so many other songs to derive this EXACT same theme with different perspectives and situations. If you find out more about Matt Bellamy, you will realize that he believes these things.
Uprising - The uprising/resistance of humankind versus the illuminati/occult power "We will be victorious." MK-ULTRA - CIA program for mind control experimentation. Unnatural Selection - Research on GMOs. Genetically modified food containing unhealthy and dangerous agents. United States of Eurasia - theory relating to the globalization of nations "The New World Order"
many other songs I don't have time to list... "Ruled by Secrecy" from Absolution is an obvious example.
Matt is right on many of his ideas. The world is ruled by neo-Babylonian bloodlines. Their system of order known as the illuminati has corrupted all governments and works in the common disinterest of humanity. They are responsible for the attacks on 9/11 as one example. However, there is a lot of speculation on this subject that is confused as fact. Don't take this as such. Decide for yourself, but you have to wake up first. "If you could flip a switch and open your third eye, you should see that we should never be afraid to die!"
It doesn't take seeing a fish to smell it. Muse gets it! Wake up!
HAARP - Weather controlling technology.

"Love is our resistance/ They keep us apart and they won't stop breaking us down"
This line is referring to a zener diode in reverse bias. The resistor placed in series between the diode and the battery is causing the diode to drop a constant amount of voltage, but without burning it out. Clearly, Matt is drawing a parallel between the delicate state of love and solid state electronics.

Nineteen Eighty-Four?
I thought the exact same thing when I heard this song. In fact the whole album makes me think about the love story in the book 1984.

So I have to wonder: What the hell is wrong with all of you? I mean, we are talking about art, here. Art. How arrogant are you to think that you have the One True Interpretation? Matthew Bellamy described how he came to his inspiration for the lyrics. His statements do not mean that there is no ambiguity or room for personal insight within his lyrics. If he wanted to write unambiguous lyrics, he would have called the characters by name and titled the song, "The Love Story Between Winston And Julia Within The George Orwell Book 1984." I think that Matthew Bellamy is a brilliant lyricist, and this song reaffirms that belief. He left the story open to varying interpretations, which makes the song more meaningful.
Good job to you who thought it was based on 1984 before Matthew Bellamy said anything either way.
I like the interpretation that this story is about two homosexual lovers. Of either sex, really. We can say that it's easier to imagine the focus on two men, as Matthew Bellamy is male, but it's left ambiguous enough for either case to be valid. I also like the interpretation that it's a retelling of Romeo & Juliet. I've always had a fancy for that story.

1984, The thought police were the force that literally took you prisoner and or killed you, or forced you to confess to crimes you didn't commit and they would wipe your existence from history as if you never existed at all. The resistance is what the books about, I won't spoil it but This is right on with the book. It's exactly how the main character in the book looked at his relationship with a young 26 year old who was even better at pretending to support the system while quietly disturbing it with any kind of breakage of rules. Anything even making love was outlawed for these people. Their love was the thing that strengthened their ability to fight back, to overcome fear and take a first step. Upon joining the resistance they said they would happily die, happily pour acid on a child's face if need be to bring the system to it's knee's, but they wouldn't leave each other. Beautifully written, if you haven't read the book at least try it. This is phenomenal shit here, capturing the essence of the entire book in such a short song. Fucking genius. Really a hell of a love story.

Scratch that, this is the best song of the new album

OK, this is quite obviously about 1984. There's almost no room for misinterpretation so everyone who has, pick up your game!

its a love and hate between two people. one person having conflicting thoughts
they both just know the relationship wont work out. and now its out of control.
"Love is our resistance They keep us apart and they won't stop breaking us down And hold me, our lips must always be sealed"
they cant be together, but love eachother so much. the relationship hurts both too much. they can never tell eachother how much they lover eachother.
"If we live our life in fear I'll wait a thousand years Just to see you smile again"
i fucked up my relationship with my ex recently. i love my ex so much, but i couldnt stop hurting her. if it takes us being apart for her to be happy, then i will gladly wait a thousand years.
it couldve been right.
Who wrote the lyrics to 'Resistance' by Muse?
