A shadow of a man
I am nothing less
I am holding on
Still holding on
And every now and then
Life begins again
I am holding on
Still holding on

I'm not like you
Your faceless lies
Your weak, dead heart
Your black dead eyes
I'll make it through
But not this time
Your hope is gone
And so is mine

Live! Fight!
Crawl back inside!
Sick! Blind!
Love left behind
And I won't live your weak wicked lie
You pull me in
I'm one step behind

Show me where it hurts
And I will make it worse
Are you holding on?
Keep holding on
Dilated eyes
Shine for one last time

Are you holding on?
Keep holding on

You're not like me
Your faceless lies
Your weak, dead heart
Your black dead eyes
I'll break you in
And let this die
Your hope is gone
And so is mine

Live! Fight!
Crawl back inside!
Sick! Blind!
Love left behind
And I won't live your weak wicked lie
You pulled me in
I'm one step behind

I'm becoming a monster
Just like you
After it all
You'll try to break me too
Falling forever
Chasing dreams
I brought you to life
So I can hear you scream

Live! Fight!
Crawl back inside!
Sick! Blind!
Love left behind
And I won't live your weak wicked lie
You pulled me in
I'm one step behind

I'm one step behind
I'm one step behind

    My Interpretation

First off, I just want to say how amazing this song is! Breaking Benjamin are fantastic!

While this song could easily be about a relationship I think it's much deeper than that. If you just look closer to the lyrics it's much more. A relationship would be way too simple. My intake on this song is that it's about the good and evil of a person. This man is looking in a mirror, telling himself that he is good, that he's not this monster and he'll fight to prove it and defeat this evi part of himl inside. But as time goes on it's almost as if the evil is consuming his body and taking over him, but as the lyrics read every first verse he's holding onto that small part of good that's inside him.

    My Interpretation

Contrary to most people's belief, I think this song actually does have to do with a relationship. The song seems to outline their disputes, never becoming detailed but referencing their cold actions towards each other. But this song is different than any normal dispute.

The relationship is so tattered and ruined that the man has to crawl away from it without dignity or happiness.

"live, fight Crawl back inside Sick, Blind Love left behind"

The chorus says it all, There is inspiration to carry on in this relationship, or in general afterwords, but now there is nothing. He feels sick and blind because he didn't see how broken they were and the agonizing feeling she left behind. The song is a beautiful synopsis of the direct feelings after this breakup, such as the dignity loss for all that he may have done for the girl, the pain and anger he felt of her betrayal, and the exert from their lifestyle with the "dilated eyes." Thanks for reading.

Does anyone else hear "A shadow of a man" instead of "I said I wasn't mad" for the first line?

Anyone think if you take this literally, it could be a murder suicide?

"I'll make it through, but not this time Your hope is gone, and so is mine

You pull me in, I'm one step behind"

and the whole holding on part, the other person isn't quite dead yet... ?

    My Interpretation

yeah I have considered myself a huge fan of B.B. from the moment I heard Sugarcoat....and they have held the number 1 spot to me ever since. Ben's a f'n bada$$ to say the least! That said.. This song is about love between two people, (sometimes things are exactly what they seem)and whomever the person singing this song is, lets say the 'main character', the one who keeps getting burned. That person truely loves the other despite this, and maybe ultimately feels in control of what direction it will take -provided that he gives it his FULL attention....it seems to be a roller coaster like most young love is, and it's realized that they have wasted so much effort on trying to make it work and with no end in site, they lose hope and let each other sort of fade away. I think this 'main character' realizes that to go any further, to prove his ultimate point to her, he must let her go.......that she has left him no choice but to let time, and the world, show her the caliber of man she was dealing with. The irony, of course, being with the fact that by then it would be too late and so it's referred to as a sort of death.... Ultimately only Ben knows what he meant, with the passion he emits into his music, everyone could have a special meaningful portion of it figured out in their own way I would think. To me, he is a god among men, to have lived a passionate life (that isn't over yet and hopefully not for a long time!)and handled what the world threw his way AND write about it AND get a successful band together AND Sing it with the absolutely explosive intensity that he puts into it.....shhhhheeeit =GW= ShaneWarily

    My Interpretation

Love could definitely be a piece here, but not necessarily. I get a very dark, very beautiful mentor/student vibe when I listen to this song, especially when we come to "I brought you to light/just to hear you scream". Others have said before me that is some kind of sense of revenge on the singer's part-- and I agree. But don't forget "I brought you to light". To me, this means the singer has nurtured this person to some extent, tried to change them/save them/stop them/whatever, but for all the wrong reasons. Because he wanted to take away what this person had too. Because the singer wants to take away who the other is just like they did to him.

Someone else suggested whoever he is singing to is dying; I think I agree, here. The "black dead eyes" could simply be a reference to evil, but "your weak, dead heart"? Wouldn't it be a cold, dead heart if it wasn't talking about death itself? I assume the singer is either torturing, killing, or sitting beside the death bed of whoever this evil person is (the first two would fit with the slowly darkening singer theme, as torturing and killing aren't the most moral things to be doing to one's once mentor/student/father/mother/lover/whatever, especially when this verse is taken into account: Show me where it hurts/And I'll make it worse/Are you holding on?, keep holding on/Dilated eyes shine for one last time/Are you holding on? Keep holding on), and he's cursing they're living breath away, letting them know he will fight the stain they left on his heart with every fiber of his being.

He is holding on - still holding on - to all he wants to be, even as the other pulls him in.

Let me give it a try..

I said I wasn't mad I'm nothing less I am holding on, Still holding on And every now and then life begins again I am holding on, Still holding on

Someone in his past is hurting him and he doesn't get mad. He keeps holding on to her, and keep trying sometimes he sees hope for them.

I'm not like you Your faceless lies Your weak dead heart Your black dead eyes

I'll make it through, but not this time Your hope is gone, and so is mine Live, Fight Crawl back inside Sick, Blind Love left behind

This person hurts him again he sees her as dead hearted mean person. She keeps hurting him this time it was the last, and he leaves the love and hope behind.

I'm becoming a monster, Just like you After it all you'll try to break me too Falling forever, Chasing dreams I brought you to life so i can hear you scream

He is trying to get revenge for what she did to him and is becoming just as cold and mean as she.

I think this song is about someone who is looking at themselves in a mirror and trying to convince themselves that they are not the person they see in the mirror. For example, he may have been abused or had a hard childhood, and this person convinced themselves that they would never be like there father or mother, but looking in the mirror they are realizing that is what they have become. It seems to be a constant fight with this person and they could be trying to talk themselves out of suicide.

This man wants to get away from someone he is in love with. He fell in love, only to realize too late that the one he loves is cruel to him. He feels stuck in the relationship. While he loves the person, he also resents them for being so terrible, and is trying to play the same games as them in an effort to tear them down. He eventually realizes that he is becoming the same person he is trying to escape. By the end of the song, they are both fighting for figurative control. The person the song is coming from is losing, but still has to escape.

i think this song is a struggle of drug addiction. when it says i am holding on still holding on. i think it means he is just struggling to get through. black dead lies is something you do when you are an addict. and one of the more telling lines in dialted eyes shine for one last time. anyone who has done a hard drug knows you love your love when your on the drug but once its done you hate your life.

You're not like me Your faceless lies Your weak dead heart Your black dead eyes

i think this is describing his comedown and realizing everything he has fucked up while on the drug.

Show me where it hurts And I'll make it worse Are you holding on?, keep holding on Dilated eyes shine for one last time Are you holding on? Keep holding on

and these lines showing the inner battle with himself with the drug.

I'm becoming a monster, Just like you After it all you'll try to break me too Falling forever, Chasing dreams I brought you to life so i can hear you scream

and this could be the battle of trying to quit the drug but not being as easy as it seems. this coming from experience and i know the lead singer has had same battles

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
