The way this song speaks to me🥺🥺when I sing it I feel like I relate
I am not the kind of girl
Who should be rudely bargin' in on a white veil occasion
But you are not the kind of boy
Who should be marryin' the wrong girl
I sneak in and see your friends
And her snotty little family, all dressed in pastel
And she is yelling at a bridesmaid
Somewhere back inside a room
Wearing a gown shaped like a pastry
This is surely not what you thought it would be
I lose myself in a daydream
Where I stand and say
"Don't say yes, run away now
I'll meet you when you're out
Of the church at the back door
Don't wait or say a single vow
You need to hear me out"
And they said, "speak now"
Fond gestures are exchanged
And the organ starts to play
A song that sounds like a death march
And I am hiding in the curtains
It seems I was uninvited by your lovely bride-to-be
She floats down the aisle like a pageant queen
But I know you wish it was me
You wish it was me, don't you?
Don't say yes, run away now
I'll meet you when you're out
Of the church at the back door
Don't wait or say a single vow
You need to hear me out
And they said, "speak now"
Don't say yes, run away now
I'll meet you when you're out
Of the church at the back door
Don't wait or say a single vow
Your time is running out
And they said, "speak now"
I hear the preacher say
"Speak now or forever hold your peace"
There's a silence, there's my last chance
I stand up with shaking hands
All eyes on me
Horrified looks from everyone in the room
But I'm only lookin' at you
I am not the kind of girl
Who should be rudely bargin' in on a white veil occasion
But you are not the kind of boy,
Who should be marryin' the wrong girl
So don't say yes, run away now
I'll meet you when you're out
Of the church at the back door
Don't wait or say a single vow
You need to hear me out
And they said, "speak now"
And you say, "let's run away now
I'll meet you when I'm out of my tux at the back door
Oh baby, I didn't say my vow
So glad you were around when they said, "speak now"
Who should be rudely bargin' in on a white veil occasion
But you are not the kind of boy

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Fast Car

Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Holiday

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
You guys hating this song are SAD! I dont perticulay think Taylor has ever crashed somebodys wedding and its catchy. And secondly this song was not autotuned, I saw it live! Plus I am a musician myself so I would hope I could tell. And its not "fun gustures" its "fond gestures" And the part about her standing up or sitting down WHO CARES. Plug in baby (Muse) made no sense what so ever, but it was still awsome! +This page was for the meanings and posotives of the song, Why would you log in, type in Speak Now, Then write an essay on how much you hate it!

It's "Where I stand and SAY"
Love it! I find the lyrics funny, in a good way of course! ♥
I have some corrections.. The chorus is actually
Don't say yes, run away now I'll meet you when you're out of the church at the back door Don't wait, or say a single vow You need to hear me out And they said speak now
the chorus switches between your version and the posted lyrics a few times i believe.
stop ruining the song!
I've been a fan of Taylor since her first album came out, but in my opinion this is by far the worst piece of writing she has ever released.
Honestly, the first time I heard this song I started laughing because it's just... so bad. It's just awful. It ended up having the opposite effect on this listener to what Taylor intended - mainly that I hate her, and feel sorry for the bride-to-be instead.
"I am not the kind of girl Who should be rudely barging in on a white veil occasion But you are not the kind of boy Who should be marrying the wrong girl"
Is she implying that there are kinds of people who should be doing these things? Also, 'White veil occasion" is really, really awkward wording. Couldn't Taylor do better?
"And her snotty little family all dressed in pastel And she is yelling at a bridesmaid Somewhere back inside a room wearing a gown shaped like a pastry"
This is one of the things I hate the most about the song- it actually says more about her "reasons" for hating the bride than any actual reasons why she's in love with the man she's fighting for. And quite frankly, it's even ruder that she's dissing the bride at her own wedding, which she's almost about to ruin. Also, I love how she can't find a better insult other than that she doesn't like the dress.
"Fun gestures are exchanged And the organ starts to play a song that sounds like a death march And I am hiding in the curtains It seems that I was uninvited by your lovely bride-to-be"
Wait... 'fun gestures'? like what? What's even the point of that lyric? The organ death march. Again with the pissy insults towards the wedding. I know you love this guy and all, but it's not the bride-to-be's fault he's stupid enough to nearly marry someone he doesn't actually want to be with. Also, here it says she's hiding in the curtains. Who in real life wouldn't notice that? Secondly, later on it says she stands up when they say 'speak now or...', but how could she have been sitting down behind the curtain? It would stick out and her presence would be apparent. We know she's not in the seats because she's not supposed to be there and the bride would flip shit if she was there, so where the hell IS she? Also, that last line is really dumb. Can she seriously BLAME the the bride for not inviting her, since 1) It would probably be up to the man to invite her since it's not like she was the bride's friend and 2) SHE'S INTERRUPTING THE WEDDING. No WONDER she didn't want her around!
"I hear the preacher say speak now or forever hold your peace Theres the silence, theres my last chance I stand up with shaking hands, all eyes on me Horrified looks from everyone in the room But Im only looking at you"
okay, at least this verse makes logical sense and isn't just plain stupid. But I hate the ways she sings it, like she's trying to make 5 syllables out of one. It wouldn't bother me so much if I knew her voice could actually hit those notes in real life, but it's so obviously edited that it's painful. Taylor, you can't do that in real life, so singing as if you're bragging that you can do that DOESN'T WORK WHEN IT'S AUTO-TUNED.
But seriously, how can you not feel bad for the bride here? Taylor never said anything about why the bride's actually apparently a bitch. On the other hand, the narrator herself is barging in and ruining what's supposed to be one of the best days of the bride's life, stealing her near-husband from her and embarrassing her in front of all her close friends and family, not to mention revealing that her near-husband never loved her at all. I think she's got more than enough reason to be a little bitchy. Also, the guy sounds like an asshole. How dumb do you have to be to ALMOST MARRY someone you obviously don't love? Wow. Not to mention it's really inconsiderate that he didn't consider how hurt the bride-to-be would be.
Yeah, this couple were meant for each other.
I have to say, as much as I usually love Taylor, I agree with you here. I know this song is intended to be "tongue in cheek" and playful, and some lines do reach their purpose (I personally found the line about the pastry dress quite funny), but to me the whole thing just comes off as pretentious and almost bratty. <br /> <br /> "You are not the kind of boy who should be marrying the wrong girl" What kind of boy SHOULD be marrying the wrong girl, exactly?<br /> <br /> "I know you wish it was me" I'm actually quite annoyed with the way she's always saying how she's better than the other girls (You Belong With Me, Permanent Marker, Invisible)<br /> <br /> I also agree that the wording can get quite awkward, "white veil occasion" being one of many examples!<br /> <br /> I don't really care about the whole "is she sitting, is she standing?" debate, since she mentions that she's "lost in a daydream", but I think it just proves that her tendency to give a lot of details (which I think work really well in songs like Tim McGraw or The Best Day) is not ALWAYS a good thing, since it may confuse the listener and take the focus away from the point of the song.<br /> <br /> Finally, I couldn't help but notice how similar the structure is to so many of her songs. Both Love Story and Mine end with the chorus being slightly changed and relating what the guy says. And from a musical point of view, it seems to me that the chords are exactly the same as in You Belong With Me.<br /> <br /> Before everyone tells me that I don't understand the reasoning of the song, I have seen the interview and I get what she was trying to do. I think that the idea behind the song was a good one. I just find the writing to be clumsy and unoriginal, so the story looks like an annoying, jealous ex is ruining an innocent's girl wedding rather than someone trying to stop the man she truly loves from making a mistake.
Haha this made me laugh. I agree completely. But the melody is catchy and it's Taylor so people will like it. It's also been like a recurring story that people relate to. <br /> At least she didn't say his eyes were as blue as weather.
@its4amandimclumsy<br /> <br /> Yeah, I agree. I honestly think it's the worst she's written so far. I wist was so much more creative.<br /> <br /> I love your point about how she's always talking about being the 'better' girl. Who here really thinks it makes you a better person to ruin someone's future? Ugh, I hate that line as well. Obviously, if he wished it was you, HE'D BE MARRYING YOU, now wouldn't he?<br /> <br /> I think one of the things that bothers me the most about the song is that so many of the lines feel like they're just there to be there; they don't actually bring anything new to the table. There are many details in there that don't matter, the chorus is just... very simple, etc. It's really not her best writing.
I agree that this song isn't all the great and it seems like it's more of a bash toward the bride rather than a love lament... but I think that when someone loves someone and they love another person, the in-love person always finds faults in the other person's significant other and that's what she's doing here.
I love this song.. and I think you are completely wrong.. Because when I hear this song I think of my best friend getting married to a girl that is wrong for him and who I know I hate and in the end he would as well. and how I would stop him and blah.. I disagree with yjou
I could not disagree more. You have just gone through and systematically pulled apart every single line and you sound like you're writing a D+ english paper. You don't have to read into EVERY SINGLE LINE like that. You may as well say "Why does Ke$ha say Tik Tok when she is wearing a digital watch?".<br /> <br /> Not only are the reason you used to put down this song petty, alot of them don't even make sense. She isn't ACTUALLY about to go and ruin someone's wedding, it's a SONG. You sound like you have personal issues and definitely relate to the bitchy bride character.<br /> <br /> Ultimately, this is just a SONG and it's supposed to be tongue in cheek. It's NOT autotuned at all from what I hear. If you want to hear autotune, watch glee. It's a catchy, clever song and doesn't need to be torn to shreds. If you hate it so much, why bother writing a page long word for word description?
I would have agreed with some of what you said at first, but this video should explain all her motives for writing this song. It's based on a friend's story.<br /> youtube.com/watch
I couldn't disagree more with what you said either. Even if it was going by what Taylor was feeling when she wrote the song you have to think it out. <br /> <br /> "But you are not the kind of boy<br /> Who should be marrying the wrong girl?"<br /> <br /> 1) You asked what kind of guy is there that should be marrying the wrong girl. Okay so think about that one guy that you have liked for as long as you can remember if you have standards set, he fits every single one, he's that one person that you know you can count on, to you, he's perfect. That's the kind of boy who should not be marrying the wrong girl. When she says that she isn't referring to a certain type of guy like a skater guy or team captain of the basketball team, she’s talking about that ONE GUY. And I think that's all the description you need about him. Because if you can picture that one guy that shouldn't be marrying the wrong girl. What more is there to describe? <br /> <br /> 2) The whole reason she is “dissing” the bride at her own wedding is because at some point in the relationship between her and this guy the relationship must have been ruined, forgotten about, mistakes were made etc. something happened and Taylor wasn't done fighting for the relationship at that point. But then the bride to be stepped in and ruined everything for Taylor and when the preacher says "speak now or forever hold your peace" that is her very last chance as stated in the song. There is obviously a story behind what is going on in the current song, but she doesn’t have her whole life to describe it in one song. <br /> <br /> 3) I really think you are smarter than this, at a wedding, what would be thee worst insult for a bride? To make a rude remark about the dress that would be one of the worst insults you can tell a bride.<br /> <br /> 4) Fun gestures? You really need an explanation for that? Everyone is excited, a wedding is about to take place… of course there are going to be fun gestures like laughing, and smiles and compliments. Seriously I don’t think you are that stupid. That line is obviously describing the scene and trying to set the mood of what the wedding is going to be like. <br /> <br /> 5) The organ sounding like a death march is just another smart comment to basically say that Taylor does not want this to be happening, she’s trying to find everything negative about it that she can because this is not the right girl for him.<br /> <br /> 6) The curtains to when she stands up. Again moving the story line along in the song, I’m sure she didn’t have the rest of her life to describe how she got from the curtains to a seat. And I’m sure you don’t’ either. I go to church and it would be pretty easy for me to hide in the curtains and then slip behind some tall guy in the pews. It’s not that hard to not be seen and it doesn’t take an idiot to figure that out.<br /> <br /> 7) Okay your right about the guy being the one to invite her, but seriously what guy is going to plan and send out the invitations to the wedding? I’m sure whoever this guy is may have possibly invited her or someone in her family, she found out about it and boom she’s there and the whole reason she wouldn’t have been invited is because the bride came across her name and said she sent out the invite when she really didn’t. It’s not that hard, and if you are taking the brides side like you seem to be… wouldn’t you do that if your fiancé was trying to invite his ex-girlfriend or a girl that has liked him for years?<br /> <br /> 8) Some idiots like you may feel bad for the bride but if you would open up your ears and listen to the song you would know that the bride isn’t nice. What kind of bride yells at her bridesmaids aka her friends or sister… if they aren’t her friends or family then who else would it be? Paid actresses? Then you really know she is a jerk (putting it in nice terms). She’s obviously snotty because the song flat out says it and I am in the same position that Taylor would be. I love that perfect guy and the guy I like is in love with this snotty little rich girl who walks around with an ever present frown. That’s probably the kind of girl she is trying to describe. And you are really and idiot. Obviously he loves the bride to be, but there is a whole other story behind why he is marrying the bride-to-be and not Taylor. I think the song is pretty self explanatory. I also think its quiet obvious that you have been in the bride’s position more than Taylor’s position so you see it from her side instead of Taylor’s that would be why you don’t understand the most straight forward song that she has written.<br /> <br /> I really believe that this is one of thee best songs Taylor has ever written, it’s catchy and smart and I would have never thought to even write a song like that… but yet I think of interrupting the wedding every day. So you are obviously wrong. You just took the song piece by piece and tried to find a way to destroy the song. Even though it is very cleverly written and you just didn’t use some common sense.<br />
This was not auto tuned. Tell me why had high notes in it. If you hate this so much why did you write a page about it!!!!
@robuneh you're such a bitch. honestly, do u have nothing better to do than piss all over a hard working, kind, talented artist. get a life
@robuneh There are a few things disagreeable with your post.. 1."This is surely not what you thought it would be And I loose myself in a daydream" This would seem to imply that the whole thing didn't really happen.. it was all a daydream.. plus this kind of thing happens a lot in movies, who says it can't happen in a song
Its not fun gestures.. its FOND gestures.
She could have sat down in the back once the whole thing actually started.
The man probably did invite her the lyrics say UNIVITED. Meaning the BRIDE took her off the guest list.
If you go listen to the interview with the story Taylor gave about this song you would understand the reasoning behind it better.
At first, I didn't really like it... but it has grown on me. It is really catchy. Obviously it's about a girl objecting to the boy she loves marrying someone else.
I love the "Horrified looks from everyone in the room, but I'm only looking at you" part.
@xxmodernlove i love almost anything by taylor, so im pretty easy to pls, but the lyrics r great and the tune is catchy.
It's really obvious she wrote this about Hayley Williams and Josh Farro, and I love the song. Sometimes people go into relationships just because they can't survive without one, or can't bear to live without attention from the opposite sex, and I think this song definitely channels that when she says he is marrying the wrong girl...a girl he is just desperate to marry instead of one he actually loves.
@Sapphiresque <3
@Sapphiresque <3
Adored this song from the start. The first time I ever heard about it was on a message board or something where someone said (this is all hearsay) that she wrote it about Hayley Williams and Josh Farro. I don't really believe the story seeing as the timeline wouldn't make to much sense, but it also sort of fits. When Taylor explained the story behind it in an interview, she said that she was inspired from what a friend had told her about a guy she'd been in love with since they were young and all of a sudden, he's getting married. Taylor put herself in the girl's shoes and thought about how it would be if she were in love with someone who was getting married and couldn't do anything about it. No matter who the friend was who she was speaking for, I still love it.
When I first read the lyrics, that's exactly who I thought of - Hayley and Josh! I mean, obviously Hayley's with Chad now, blah blah blah, but Taylor could have just been... I don't know, using her imagination I guess. (Just to be clear, I'm not saying that Hayley's still in love with Josh, they're both happy, so we should let them be.)
@anythingelse ! omg, i never knew that<br />
oh what are you guys on about!! This is sooo cute! Go Taylor. I get from it that they've probably mocked her "snotty little family" and the pastry dress. This song is just too cute. SO CUTE
@taytayswizzlewizze love u!<br />
I understand that Taylor Swift had another meaning in mind when writing this song, but as a soon-to-be English major, I can't help but interpret this song differently.
For me, this song has a double meaning; yes, it is whatever everyone is saying about watching your childhood sweetheart marry another person, but it can also be about going for a dream or goal or just saying something that needs to be said even if you know there are going to be obstacles and people who want to push you down/away from achieving whatever it is you're seeking to achieve. You might not be the type of person who is assertive when dealing with what you want, but there comes a time where you need to stand up and say "Hey, this is wrong," or "This is what I want". The title of the song (and album) is "Speak Now". That definitely means more than just interrupting a wedding for a childhood love. It means making a change or taking a stand.
