Well, in my opinion this song is about being a young & maybe a little naive &/or introverted girl and finding yourself loving a man who is at first very charming, carefree & outgoing, and seems at first to be without limits, as in

then that man starts to gradually become more introverted & shows their more possessive/obsessive side to you as the relationship progresses, even while they keep up the appearance of being carefree & outgoing to everyone else,

so you confront them about the way they're acting and of course they deny it,

By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart

I agree. John Mayer, definitely. But aside from WHO it's about, WHAT it's about...well I see it as a song dedicated to a man she idealizes, and sees as untouchable. She puts him on a pedestal, he is her "Superman" and worships him, secretly, silently, and wants to someday, tell him how she feels.
so just a lyric correction-- in the last verse, i don't think it's "and i watch you fly around the world, and i hope you're texting some other girl." that doesn't really make sense. i've listened to it a bunch of times and i think it's "and i watch you fly around the world, and i hope you don't save some other girl."

I think it's about a girl who admires a guy who is hard working and very busy. He's out doing what he's bond to do in life and being successful at it. He has the determination and will just as it says when she quotes "He's got his mothers eyes his fathers ambition". Even though he's really busy and she misses him, she knows he doing the right thing in life and she will be there waiting for him when he's accomplished what he needs to accomplish or when he's done "saving the world" in her perspective.
i think that's really cute since a lot of young girls these days go for guys who are lazy and get whatever they want without hard work. this girl is falling in love with someone who a little out of her reach because of his every day hectic life style which is different to her and she considers him her "Superman"
I actually agree with you. When I first heard the song, I thought it was exactly how you described it. Reminded me of someone I know, who is leaving for the Marines. <br /> He's a Superman to me, and positive and caring things will be here when he returns back home.<br /> <br /> But I read others' posts about how it about some guy who leaves her hanging and such. Yep, its def about John Mayer. I didn't think so at first either, but she keeps saying: "i loved you from the very first day", and in Dear John thats the secret message in the lyrics. i love these insights too, and it really makes me wonder who she's still in love with. joe? john? taylor? all of her songs to them on this album are raw and sweet.
