Dark Fantasy Lyrics

You might think you've peeped the scene, you haven't.
The real one's far too mean.
The watered down one, the one you know; was made up centuries ago.
It made it sound all whack and corny, yes it's awful, blasted boring.
Twisted fiction, sick addiction, well gather 'round children, zip it listen!

Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah

I fantasized about this back in Chicago
Mercy, mercy me, that Murcielago
That's me, the first year that I blow
How you say broke in Spanish? Me no hablo
Me drown sorrow in that Diablo
Me found bravery in my bravado
DJs need to listen to the models
You ain't got no fuckin' Yeezy in your Serrato? (You ain't got no Yeezy, nigga?)
Stupid, but what the fuck do I know?
I'm just a Chi-town nigga with a Nas flow
And my bitch in that new Phoebe Philo
So much head, I woke up to Sleepy Hollow

Can we get much higher? (Higher, higher, higher?)
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh

Look like a fat booty Celine Dion
Sex is on fire, I'm the king of Leona Lewis,
beyond the truest
Hey, teacher, teacher, tell me how do you respawn the students?
And refresh the page and restart the memory?
Respark the soul and rebuild the energy?
We stopped the ignorance, we killed the enemies
Sorry for the night demons that still visit me
The plan was to drink until the pain over
But what's worse, the pain or the hangover?
Fresh air, rollin' down the window
Too many Urkels on your team, that's why your wins low
Don't make me pull the toys out, huh
Don't make me pull the toy-o-oy-oys
And fire up the engines
And then they make no-o-oi-o-oise

Can we get much higher? (Higher, higher, higher?)
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh

At the mall, there was a seance
Just kids, no parents
Then the sky filled with heron
(I saw the devil) In a Chrysler LeBaron
And the hell, it wouldn't spare us
(And the fires did declare us)
(But after that, took pills, kissed an heiress)
(And moved her back in Paris)

Can we get much higher? (Higher, higher, higher?)
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh

Can we get much higher? (Higher, higher, higher?)
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh

To me it's pretty obvious that the first lines are heavily influenced by "Revolting Rhymes" by Roald Dahl, which is a book full of reworked fairy tales. Just for comparison, here's the first lines from Roald Dahl's "Cinderella":

I guess you think you know this story. You don't. The real one's much more gory. The phony one, the one you know, Was cooked up years and years ago, And made to sound all soft and sappy just to keep the children happy.

My Opinion

Great pick up!

You might be right about that, But what i think shes talking about is the bible. yes the bible ("the one you know") was made centuries ago. and yes the bible is hella boring. nicki minaj is saying that its not hte whole truth.

@notwist I know your comment is ten years old so you’re probably already aware but I recently found this demo version of the album and that is the original opening to Dark Fantasy, I thought reading your comment sounded familiar

The whole song is about how he thought that if he could only hit it big, make money, and sleep with hot women, he would be happy (verse 1 through "King of Leona Lewis"). He still has the pain and emptiness inside and all the problems that were around when he was growing up persist in the neighborhood, so he is still haunted by them, but he is constantly looking to his wealth to distract him (cars as toys, three lines that he sings as if taunting someone as a child). The most intriguing part is the end. The seance refers to people getting together to talk to their dark feelings. They were all kids because they did not have mature perspectives. The sky filled with heron line could mean two things. It is either a reference to our lady of guadalupe, which would make sense since the children said they saw the devil, or it's a reference to the drug heroin. either way, he then relives his demons from the days he drove in a chrysler lebaron (his youth, which he references on another album). eventually that past overtakes him, but he flushes it away with pills and sex, waking up miles away or still inside an heiress (either way you look at it) and wonders how much more he can continue to numb the pain and how much higher he'll need to get next time.

its "Too many Urkels on your team, that's why your winslow"

referencing the 1989-1997 tv show, Family Matters.

No, it's a reference to Wiz Khalifa, however, it is a pun using Family Matters as the punchline.

For the most part the album references the American Empire. The intro for Dark Fantasy relates to the false history of America foist upon all generations. The album asks can the American Empire get much higher and answers this refrain in the last song 'Who will survive in America.' The album should be taken as a whole rather than individual tracks because the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Love Nicki Minaj doin the intro "You might think you've peeped the scene, you haven't. The real one's far too mean. The watered down one, the one you know; was made up centuries ago. It made it sound all whack and corny, yes it's awful, blasted boring. Twisted fiction, sick addiction, but gather 'round children, zip it listen!"

I think it should be Serato with only one 'r' because he's talking about the company and it's DJ software.

Lyric Correction

song is about dreaming about making it big that all of his troubles would go away "Me drown sorrow in that Diablo". When he made it big he's sees more clearly the problems in society and makes him even more sadder "The plan was to drink until the pain over, but whats worse the pain or the hangover". And the problems of the world were so bad the entire earth went to hell.

Offhand, a couple of corrections:

"King of Leon and Lewis" should be "King of Leona Lewis"

"moved her back in Paris" should be "Woke up back in Paris"

Lyric Correction

Nah it should be King of Leon, since it's a reference to Kings of Leon's song Sex on Fire.

You're both right, he is for sure sayin "King of Leona Lewis" it makes total sense Ye's combining the two artist's names When I first heard this verse I was amazed how good it is =)

I think it's "respond to students" NOT "respawn the students"

Lyric Correction

its definitely respawn the students.

that whole first is referencing to technology taking students away from school..he's asking how to respawn the students - to get them back in school VS playing video games - to refresh the page (textbooks VS websites) - to restart the memory (mental VS computer).

as a teacher and someone who enjoys a good ol game of CoD or halo, i immediately said "genius" out loud when i heard these lyrics

immortlone1188, tell your students that you like Kanye West. That alone will earn their respect. I guarantee it.
