The Kids From Yesterday Lyrics
Well now this could be the last of all the rides we take
So hold on tight and don't look back
We don't care about the message
Or the rules they make
I'll find you when the sun goes black
When we were young
We used to say
That you only hear the music when your heart begins to break
Now we are the kids from yesterday
Oh, oh
They only care if you can bleed
Does the television make you feel the pills you ate
Or every person that you need to be?
When we were young
We used to say
That you only hear the music when your heart begins to break
Now we are the kids from yesterday
(Yeah)
Today
Today
We are the kids from yesterday
Today
(Today) yell it out 'til your (today) heart stops beating
We are the kids from yesterday
Today
When we were young
We used to say
That you only hear the music when your heart begins to break
Now we are the kids from yesterday (oh)
We are the kids from yesterday (oh)
We are the kids from yesterday (oh)
We are the kids from yesterday (oh)
Today
Today

This song, for me, holds two meanings.
The first is the free interpretation, which I agree, it's about being young and later, when you grow up, watching all that you once was.
The second is along the Killjoys story. The first verse tells it all. "And now this could be the last of all the rides we take. So hold on tight and don't look back", it's about the last ride of the Killjoys, the ones that are still alive, Party Poison and Fun Ghoul, when they risk it all and fight the BL/ind. "We don't care about the message or the rules they make. We'll find you when the sun goes black", so they just fight the BL/ind. and they will find whoever they want to rescue, no matter what.
It's an awesome song, indeed, in an awesome, awesome album.

I like that they cover so many different styles on this album, that you can have songs like this on the same album with "Na Na Na". It's so awesome and they do them all so well.

I'm not really sure what this song is about, i get an idea of the band getting older and just trying to enjoy the joys they get out of playing music and making an album, idk. Either way, the line "you only hear the music when your heart begins to break," I think is amazing. I haven't really thought about it until then, but I really believe that. Music can never touch you as hard as it does when you're, simply put, depressed.
I'm not a fan of Na Na Na, (mostly cause of the name, haha) but I'm liking the sound of the new album either way!

I think this song is about MCR fans aging. When Helena came out we were all at a completely different point in our lives

I think Konstantine is right on. This song is about the band getting old. Also I would add that they feel they are losing their message in the modern world, and they are trying to put together a final plea. I think they are trying to establish what the band was about; their message wrapped up in a song. They don't want to be remembered for eyeliner and makeup, but as a righteous alternative to pop culture. I try to avoid using these famous last words, but, I've been a fan from the beginning; and this song really shakes me. It shows their willingness to admit the dawn of their career. In simple terms I think this song is MCR's way of saying 'it was a good run, thank you.' I just hope there are kids practicing that are ambitious as this group, playing in basements, defying the norms, and blowing people's minds. I feel a 'passing of the torch' feeling to this song, and I hope there are succesors.

I think it's about them basically shedding the weight of a whole genre that they've had tagged to them since their beginning. "You only live forever in the lights you make", that obviously means you'll only be remembered for the good you do in the world, instead of the angst and negative emotions that have been plaguing their music for so long (though, as a diehard MCR fan, I'm aware that the only messages they've tried to send are positive).
"When we were young we used to say that you only hear the music when you're heart begins to break", further backing up that it's about how the only thing they used to be able to turn into music were the bad things they needed to get off their minds.
"Now we are the kids from yesterday", now they're all grown up and their music is changing with them.
All the other verses seem to be about the music industry in general ("they only care if you can bleed").

I love the new direction that their songs are taking. Nostalgia, anyone?

I think it's "And you only live forever in the lights you make" not "And you want to live forever in the lights you make"
I also think this is going to be the next single. Great album overall...and I'm not an MCR fan.

cool song, i enjoy the line "we are the kids from yesterday, today," but i think there are better songs to become singles if this one really is gonna be a single...

Favorite song on the album so far, along with "Na Na Na" and "Save Yourself, I'll Hold 'Em Back."
Since this seems to be a concept album...well, it obviously ties into the story of the Killjoys, but I'm not sure how. Anyone else have any ideas?
