I took a walk with the palm trees as the daylight fell
Sangria in a canteen
Talking to myself
This tattoo on my left hand
Is turning purple-ish blue
Daydreams of the romance
Daydreams of you
My pretty woman in a ballgown
I'm Richard Gere in a tux
Getting married in a courthouse
Writing vows in a rush
Making out before the judge
With my teenage wife
Got a wedding band done
That I just might die with
It's an American wedding
They don't mean too much
But we were so in love
We had an American wedding
Now what's mine is yours
That's American law
M-r- s dot Kennedy
She signed her name in pen
In a fancy fancy cursive
Then turned her term papers in
A thesis on Islamic virgin brides and arranged marriage
Hijabs and polygamist husbands
Those poor unamerican girls
After school she ran to me
Jumped in my 5.0
This is the home of the brave
Land of the free
But your parents still didn't know
She said I've had a hell of a summer
So baby
Don't take this hard
But maybe we should get an annulment
Before this goes way to far
It's just an American wedding
They don't mean too much
They don't last enough
We had an American wedding
Now what's mine is yours
American divorce
Well you can have my mustang
That's all I've got in my name
But Jesus Christ don't break my heart
This wedding ring won't ever wipe off
But if you stay
Girl if you stay
You'll probably leave later anyway
It's love made in the U.S.A
Sangria in a canteen
Talking to myself
This tattoo on my left hand
Is turning purple-ish blue
Daydreams of the romance
Daydreams of you
My pretty woman in a ballgown

this part is missing:
Don't let em front you To saying you can't move without em Fuck em I tell em this ain't new We been some hustlers since it began dude Ain't gon' be tripping over some bitch ass dude They so vain I tell em this ain't you You keep it sensitive but this ain't true These niggas can't do nothing that I can't do That she can't That he can't do That you can't do That we can't do Man I had a dream and that shit became true And nigga if I did it I think you can too These niggas can't do nothing that I can't do That she can't That he can't do That you can't do That we can't do Man I had a dream and that shit became true These niggas can't do nothing that I can't do That she can't That he can't do That you can't do
I agree with the above statements however it can also be about young love. How you think your in love and ready to marry this person and some even do. Then shortly its "annulled" (like in the song) or they break up.
That's my favourite part of the song, if it even can be called a part of the song.

There's a bit where he sings (I think) "Man I had a dream and in it she came true/ And nigga if I did it I think you can too" which is just kind of perfect, like all the various negativity and positivity from the rest of the album suddenly get resolved in this one lovely line.
basically, i think the song is about how us american's take advantage of marriage. &' how much of a shame it is that this is one country where you can marry someone you love &' want to be with, but in other counrties marriages are arranged, women aren't happy, def. not in love &' they're husbands are fools &' we totally take advantage of how lucky we are.
in my opinion america is selfish &' our love's is based of lies &' good sex.. people over seas like india or china or places where marriage is arranged would DIE to marry someone they were actually in love with ..
hey now, people in India or China are NOT longing to have American weddings. in fact, arranged marriages almost NEVER end in divorce. but what huge percentage of American weddings do? who is happier? care to re-think that claim?

just because you don't understand arranged marriages doesn't mean they're wrong or those who do it aren't happy and wish they were American. it's tradition in India, it's how it works, it's how people are happy. it's how they love.

and i agree with you there, Mac, people are more selfish here. this song hints at that a bit; american weddings are too cavalier. they don't last. the wedding is more important than the marriage itself.
Um, sorry, but the people that participate in arranged marriages are usually not allowed to divorce so your claim is completely invalid.
Sounds a lot like Kim Kardashian's wedding!
I'm going to assume and hope for your sake you are speaking of Kim Kardashian as retarded and not me.
Frank Ocean uses irony and repetition in the lyrics of his song, American Wedding to reveal his objection to marriage in America, and he uses specific allusive and paradoxical diction to contribute to his perspective on American marriage. In his song, American Wedding, Frank Ocean expresses to listeners his views on marriage in America, and how he believes that in America, marriage is not a true act of love and it’s not meant to last. One thing he does to get this point across is he uses irony. In the beginning of the song he describes him and his wife, "My pretty woman in a ballgown, I'm Richard Gere in a tux", Richard Gere being an American symbol for romance, glamour, and success. Later in the song, Ocean's wife breaks up with him, asking for an annulment, "Don't take this hard But maybe we should get an annulment Before this goes way to far". The contrast between the grand imagery of glamorous Ocean and his wife, and the reality of their relationship's fragility gives the song an ironic tone, contributing to Ocean's view of marriage in America and how he feels like it's a joke. Ocean also uses the repetition of the lyrics in the chorus to contribute to his perspective. The chorus goes, "It's an American wedding They don't mean too much But we were so in love We had an American wedding Now what's mine is yours That's American law" He repeats this twice throughout the song, changing the last line from "That's American law" to "American divorce" for the second repetition. Repeating these lines twice really emphasizes his main view, that American Weddings "Don't mean too much". Going from saying "What's mine is yours That's American law" to saying "What’s mine is yours American divorce" in the second chorus, also alludes to the idea that divorce is a part of American marriage and American law, further contributing to Oceans perspective on marriage in America and how it's not meant to last. In the last lines when he says "It's love made in the U.S.A", there's a paradox in the contrast between the concept of love - being associated with deep emotional connection and authenticity, and the idea of being "made in the U.S.A" - suggesting something artificial or manufactured. This again, contributes to Ocean's perspective on marriage in America, that it's not an act of genuine or authentic love.
Frank Ocean uses the instrumental from the song, Hotel California by the Eagles, as an allusion for the self-destructiveness of American marriage because the overarching theme Hotel California is the self-destructiveness of the Hollywood music industry. In the song, Hotel California, The Eagles explore how people get trapped in the Hollywood music industry and how it leads to their self-destruction. An example of this is the line, "We are all just prisoners here Of our own device", or "We are programmed to receive You can check out any time you like But you can never leave" (from Hotel California). By singing his own lyrics to the instrumental from Hotel California, Frank Ocean is alluding to the idea that marriage in America is like the Hollywood music industry in the way that it's a self-destructive trap. It makes listeners think about how American marriages trap people because they get married for the wrong reasons. This contributes to the overall message of the song, that in America, marriage is not a true act of love and that it's not meant to last.
