So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Oh
Tonight I'm gonna show
Them what I'm made up for
The killer queen inside me's
Coming out
Say, "Hello!"
Oh
Tonight I will return
The fame and riches earned
With you I'd watch them all be burnt
Whoa-Oh, Whoa-Oh
Whenever I start feeling strong
I'm called a bitch in the night
But I don't need these 14-carat golds to win
I am a woman, I insist it's my life
I can be
The queen that's inside of me
This is my chance to release it
Be brave for you you'll see
I can be
The queen you need me to be
This is my chance to be the dance
Our dream is happening
I can be the queen
I
Wind and hurricane
The stormy sky and rain
When you run dry I'll flood your pain
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh
In between the moments of
The lady I've become
A voice speaks through the noise like drums
Rhomp-a-bump-a
Whenever I start feeling strong
I'm called a bitch in the night
But I don't need these 14-carat golds to win
I am a woman, I insist it's my life
I can be

Our dream is happening
I can be the queen
The quee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-een
The que-ee-een
Quee-ee-een
Quee-ee-een
Starry night come inside me like never before
Don't forget me when I come crying to heaven's door
I will fly on a challenger across the sky
Like a phoenix so you can remind them of the dream I bore
Whoa, oh, oh
Whoa-oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Whoa-oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh

This song makes me soo happy! It makes me feel beautiful and free and alive, and able to do anything I want. The great thing about this song that it doesn't just encourage and motivate drag queens and gay people but also just heterosexual insecure girls like myself ;)
This song is, like Lady Gaga revealed on her twitter some time ago, that it's about being strong and brave. What she didn't reveal to us is how much it ties back to her past work. I think it's an absolutely wonderful song because it throughout the lyrics, you can see references to her extremely old song, No Floods. Side-by-side, No Floods and The Queen tell a story about a girl who started off as a princess of her New York streets and moved on to being a Queen, without forgetting where she came from and how much she has grown because of her fans, who are her kingdom now (so to speak). It's also about fulfilling the dreams of your youth and being the person you had hoped to become.
No Floods - "I never ever thought I'd live away From everybody that I love and say Goodbye" The Queen - "Oh, tonight I'm gonna show them what I'm made of, oh, The killer queen inside me is coming to say hello" No Floods - "No matter lightning or thunder, Buckets of rain water, You can't flood this town" The Queen - "I, wind and hurricane, The stormy sky and rain, When you run dry I'll flood your pain"
And perhaps
No Floods: “fire can’t burn these hands” The Queen: “like a phoenix”
Throughout the song, there are some other parts that recall Marry The Night earlier in the album, like the constant references to tonight and the church bells in the very beginning of the song. At the very end of the song, the lyrics “I will fly on a challenger across the sky” and her voice cracking for that moment after she finishes her lyrics seems to suggest a connection to Future Love from The Fame Ball Tour. In that song, she talks about a “plane car” or a “flying car” (depending on the live version you listen to) that she uses to get to her future love. Is she trying to say that her fans have been her future love all along? That might be going too far, though.
What we can concretely see evident is The Queen’s relation to No Floods, its church bells and night references that call back to Marry The Night, and her very clear voice crack at the end of her lyrics that imitate her voice cracking at the end of Future Love. Her constant self-referencing reminds me why I love Lady Gaga and why I think she’s a wonderful lyricist. Her lyrics are getting closer and closer to being poetic and I can’t wait for the day when people outside her super fans see that she’s more than just her “rah rah roma mas” and her “Juda-juda-a-as.” It’s easy to overlook The Queen as a simple song, since it’s a bonus track and its beginning sounds very simplistic, but the song is riddled with little reminders of who she was and it all builds up to that very last, stanza that sounds like a powerfully booming declaration of her identity and love for her dreams and her fans. I think it’s becoming one of my favorite songs on the album and of hers.
Side-note: According to Fernando Garibay, the song’s background music also references Queen apparently. I don’t listen to Queen enough to see the connection, but if one of her producers says so, then it’s another legitimate reference to Lady Gaga’s past.
I can't believe you missed the Queen reference in the actual lyrics:<br /> <br /> "The Killer Queen inside of me is coming to say hello."
"Killer Queen" is one of Queen's biggest hits. Hell, the song's named "The Queen" and the next track on the album, "You and I" features Queen guitarist Brian May.<br /> <br /> As far as the reference in the music, I think he's probably referring to the harmonized guitars towards the end. Heavily layered, harmonized lead guitars is one of Brian May's trademark moves.
"I will fly on a Challenger across the sky, like a pheonix so you can remind them of the dream I bore" - The Queen
"when punk-tius comes to kill the king upon his throne, I'm ready for their stones...... I don't want to die alone" - Bloody Mary
"my songs are of the revolution. My heart hurts for my generation..... I have cried for, I will die for how I care" - Americano
"I'm on the edge of glory and I'm standing on a moment of truth..... Another shot, before we kiss the other side tonight, I'm on the edge of something final we call life tonight, put on your shades cause I'll be dancing in the flames tonight" - Edge of Glory
"im gonna drink my tears and cry, cause I know you love me baby" - Government Hooker
"diana, you're still in our hearts, never let you fall apart, together we'll dance in the dark" - Dance In The Dark
Theres so many underlying messages in her music that go unnoticed. she's about to do something BIG, and she knows she might die for it.
i agree with you :0
Perhaps but.<br /> <br /> <br /> All of her albums have overarching themes and what not.<br /> <br /> <br /> The Fame emphasized flamboyance and other raunchy things that accompany riches and fame. <br /> <br /> The Fame Monster emphasized the flaws in addition to Gaga's certain phobias and fears.<br /> <br /> Born This Way emphasizes the individual[especially those who are discriminated against for "racial," sexual, philosophical, or religious reasons.] in the face of society's oppressive idea of being normal yet promoting uniqueness. To empower oneself and accept one another's differences to grow stronger and achieve or at least pursue happiness.<br /> <br /> <br /> Shrug. I do not expect Gaga to be stupid enough to risk killing her self. The noble end of a short life for a good cause is the pinnacle of immaturity.
Ok I know this was posted a long time ago, but I registered here just to reply to this.<br /> <br /> The last part of this song is exactly about doing something risky and / or dying young. <br /> Many legends have died at the age of 27 for various reasons, and the first time I heard this song I got seriously scared that she could be planning her own death.<br /> <br /> "like a pheonix so you can remind them of the dream I bore"<br /> <br /> Isn't it an explicit martyr line?<br /> <br /> Yes, it still gives me the chills when I stop to think of it.<br /> I hope I'm wrong about all of this, but I can't help considering it.
....Princess Die.
I remember watching HBO's special for The Monster Ball. There was one part, where she starts tearing up, and says she wants to be a queen for us, her fans. I feel like this song is about that. This song is written for us. She's telling us that she'll do anything and everything to be a queen for us, so that her fans can have someone to love and look up to.
This may sound crazy to you all, but this song /really/ reminds me of Lady Macbeth. Just saying.
Killer Queen is actually a song by Queen from 1974
This Is About Gaga Not Wanting The Money but the love of her fans she saying she doesnt need money or gold to be happy her happiness is with us Monsters.
good job!
This song is undoubtedly also about showing encouragement for queens--drag queens and just very flamboyant gay guys. Gaga could not be more explicit about her love for her gay fans and gay culture, and with lyrics such as "The lady I have become" and "Come inside me like never before" it seems quite clear that this song is about queens in the gay slang sense as well as some broad sense of Gaga being The Queen--probably of pop.
I cannot fathom why you got a -1 but...<br /> <br /> It is a little extreme to assume that drag queens and gay men are all that the song is about empowering, but I definitely got wisps of that in listening to the song.<br /> <br /> <br /> However, when I read the lyrics, they invoke a sense of stalwart perseverance in the face of adversity. To overcome any challenge regardless of the odds and what not.<br /> <br /> <br /> I could see this as empowering any person, people who feel oppressed as a result of being trapped in the closet or whatever, or simply emphasizing Gaga's "role" as the leader or queen of gay/bi/transgender movements and rights.
