Mine Lyrics
Is the only way that I might grow
A secret's safe behind a pretty smile
And it's mine, mine, mine, mine, mine, mine
I don't think your love likes me at all
A secret's safe behind a pretty smile
But it's mine, mine, mine, mine, mine, mine
What? What might you do to find out why I can't love you?
I can't love you!
Who said it was cool to be asking me these questions?
Your who, what, and where, when and why are making my head spin
And when was it an option to put your lips upon my lips?
And how did this happen?
And why are you laughing?
And how do I get back together again?
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh
What?
What might you do?
And what?
What might you do?
To find out why
To find out why
I can't love you
I can't love you
I can't love you

yay, I'm the first to comment
this is one my favourite songs on the album.
it's about a relationship that's breaking down and he's probably having an affair(what's with all the late night liqor phone calls?) but she has some kind of secret too(a secret safe behind a pretty smile), possibly that she's also having an affair and that fact that it's hers and no one else's is making her feel better
OR ALTERNATIVELY She's the only one who's had an affair, but she's having "late night liqor phone calls" with her lover which are making her partner suspicous and he's asking questions which are making her nervous(and who said it was cool to be asking me these questions)and she's scared he's going to find out "why I can't love you". she's still pretty sure her secret is "safe behind a pretty smile" but she's starting to panic and get confused ,so the song starts off without any questions but by the end it's almost entirely questions.
But in that case, why doesn't she just leave her current partner? Anyone any ideas? I only worked out this second interpretation as I was writing this and now I really want to know!

This song could be about a memory from the past that makes her afraid to love him. The secret is hers and she's wondering what he might do to discover it(and see if he really loves her)
Sorry for the short interpretation, but this is a short song.
