Sick Lyrics

Embrace the silence
Cause there's nothing that can
Change the way I feel
Taking over what you wanted
Now there's nothing that can
Change the way I feel

Hold on little girl
The end is soon to come

Sick of it all, sick of it all
We will not follow
Sick of it all, sick of it all
They will understand how
Sick we are, sick we are
Of this bottomless pit of lies
Behind your eyes

Oceans between us
And there's nothing that can change the way I feel
I can still taste the poison
Of every thought, every breath I wasted here

Hold on little girl
The end is soon to come

Sick of it all, sick of it all
We will not follow
Sick we are, sick we are
They will understand
How sick we are, sick we are
Of this bottomless pit of lies
Behind closed eyes

Someday you'll know the pain
Someday light will break through
And nothing you tell yourself
Will save us from the truth

Screaming out
Sick of it all, sick of it all
We will not follow
Sick we are, sick we are
They will understand
How sick we are, sick we are
Of this bottomless pit of lies
Behind closed eyes

Seems to like she's sick of soceity's bullshit norms and the fakes we have running around, claiming to be real ("Sick of it all, sick of it all, sick of it all. We will not follow) And she's saying to those that feel like they should succumb to the pressures of soceity that they should hang on, and the time will come when they no longer have to feel pressured ("Hold on, lttle girl. The end is soon to come") The poison she mentions could be the media and tabloids. (",)

i agree.

as u see the song is all about "girls power" and it has such a huge female energy in it..it just show u the way to leave a man or a boyfriend you know like getting tough and confidant...etc (the usual girls issues)

i kinda like the song despite the fact that im a guy lol

Song Meaning

Sorry i have to differ with you - It does not seem girly song - Girls power thing.. I think she is talking to herself - as a character.

The song, i feel, is effective a push-n-pull of relationship between couples and the mighty The End where one moves on ... :)

This song does not at all seem to be about getting the "strength" to "leave a boyfriend". (I'm pretty sure five years after she broke up with that dude, she's not writing another song about him). I don't see it as a song to one specific person at all, but rather she is speaking to the way the world dismisses her and people like her...because she rocks out she must hate pop artists. Because the lyrics are sad rather than angry (most of the time) she's not really part of the metal scene. etc.

I've noticed a lot of the time people describe her by, judge her, see her as, and base her personality on how she is "not like those other female pop/rock stars". Because the world is sexist she can't have her own identity. She can't just be that person who's always been into music and heavy metal and who sings about the pain of her sister's death and her abusive boyfriend.
One day the world will see that she is a rocker and rocks out for fun not always trying to be anti-this or (ugh) girl-power that.

And I think the people she's had problems with (i.e Ben Moody, John LeCompt, and her ex) latch on to those same claims during disagreements. And she's sick of the same tired shit being thrown in her face. That's what the song says to me.

I think it's about being tired of the pressures of the media, and stress caused by lots of things. The power and aggressivness of the song suggests that it's a feeling that's been bottled up for a long time, but she's had enough and lets it out in this song. The line "Taken all that you wanted/ Now there's nothing that can change the way I feel" suggests that she's put up with it for a long time, but isn't gonna take it any more. This is supported by the explosion of the powerful, cathartic chorus - Great song! :)

To the guy in the first post, you don't have to feel guilty about likeing this song because it's not about a man. It has been said in interview by Amy herself, that this song is about the pressures of the label and the music industry itself. It's about being SICK of being fed lies and to be told to "hold on, little girl". It was written about that period of time when the label didn't feel confident engh about Evanescence (Terry and Amy's TOD era) and its work. They rejected the project at first and were kind of skeptycal all along. This song along with New Way to Bleed were of the first ever written for this album and both deal with the same subject, hence why only one of them made it into the standard record. ALSO, songs where a band uses the "we" during verses are usually written that way for fans to sing along easily. It's an anthemic resource.

Also here's a little speech amy gave during an Athen show that I think sums up a lot of it: "Are you sick of being told who to be?! What do?! What to fu**ing say?!"

Like everyone's said that it's about the record deal... but one thing I would like to add... Even though Amy has already said that it wasn't her intent -- it does sound like a political stand. Also I think this song should've been on Underworld instead of "Made of Stone" Cirafly24 it's "They don't understand how"

When I first heard this song, I thought of a kid who's faking being sick because she's being bullied at school and wants an excuse not to go:

"Embrace the silence... taken all that you wanted" You've beaten me down to nothing, so now I won't be there for you to pick on.

"Hold on, little girl, the end is soon to come" She's about to graduate, but she still feels like a little child. She's reminding herself that her suffering will soon end after graduation.

"We will not follow" She's done with following trends in the hopes that people will accept her.

"They don't understand how sick we are of this bottomless pit of lies behind closed eyes" 'They' refers to her parents. She doesn't tell them about the bullying and even lies about her school life to try and hide her pain, so all of it is hidden behind her closed eyes when she goes to sleep at night.

"Oceans between us" She's isolated, either physically or mentally, from anyone who could be considered a friend. Possibly she moved away from all her friends.

"I can still taste the poison of every thought, every breath I wasted here" She feels her time at that school was wasted because she was so miserable, and she wants to forget it all, but the memory of those years will haunt her forever.

"Someday you'll know the pain; someday the light will break through, and nothing you tell yourself will save us from the truth" To her bullies: Someday someone will treat you as badly as you treated me, and you'll realize how much you hurt me. Whatever justification you used for bullying me (I wasn't popular enough, wasn't pretty enough, you didn't like me, etc.) doesn't change what you did or make it any better.
