its amazing how far music can come.. 24 years after it released and its one of the most heartfelt songs ive heard
It's probably what's best for you,
I only want the best for you
And if I'm not the best then you're stuck
I tried to sever ties and I
Ended up with wounds to bind
Like you're pouring salt in my cuts
And I just ran out of band-aids
I don't even know where to start
'Cause you can bandage the damage
You never really can fix a heart
Even though I know it's wrong
How could I be so sure
If you never say what you feel feel
I must have held your hand so tight
You didn't have the will to fight
I guess you needed more time to heal
Baby I just ran out of band-aids
I don't even know where to start
'Cause you can bandage the damage
You never really can fix a heart
Oh oh woh oh woh oh ah
Oh oh oh oh oh oh yea
Oh oh woh oh woh oh ah
Oh oh yah ya ya
Yah
You must be a miracle worker
Swearing up and down that you can fix what's broken yeah
Please don't get my hopes up no no
Baby tell me how could you be so cruel
It's like you pouring salt on my cuts
Baby I just ran out of band-aids
I don't even know where to start
'Cause you can bandage the damage
You never really can fix a heart
Baby I just ran out of band-aids
I don't even know where to start
'Cause you can bandage the damage
You never really can fix a heart
Oh no no no
You never really can fix a heart
Oh no no no
You never really can fix a heart
Oh oh oh
Oh ya oh ah
Oh oh oh oh
You never really can fix my heart
I only want the best for you
And if I'm not the best then you're stuck
I tried to sever ties and I
Ended up with wounds to bind
Like you're pouring salt in my cuts
And I just ran out of band-aids
I don't even know where to start
'Cause you can bandage the damage
You never really can fix a heart
Even though I know it's wrong
How could I be so sure
If you never say what you feel feel
I must have held your hand so tight
You didn't have the will to fight

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.
cried my eyes out the first time i heard this. it's a beautiful song. clearly about her struggle with cutting and bipolar. "you can bandage the damage, you never really can fix a heart" - if you struggle with this kind of stuff you can never truly be better.
This song could have so many meanings, it's so vast. For me, personally, I only think of one thing. It makes me think of a guy making a girl hurt herself because she feels she will never be enough for him. She tries to fix things and "Server ties" but ends up cutting herself. She cries and she's feels a great deal of emotional and physical pain. In the chorus, she is saying that after all that she's done to herself, she realizes that all these marks on her skin from hurting herself will heal in time and will fade. But the scars on her heart are permanent because you can't really fix a heart after it's completely broken. It's like once a heart is broken into a million little pieces, you will never be able to find and assemble every single piece again. I love it when she says "It's like you're pouring salt in my cuts" because it's so true. She feels so much pain emotionally, she relates it to the pain in her cuts. Salt makes cuts BURN, the same feeling the girl is experiencing. Whatever the guy's doing, it's like he's adding fuel to the fire (or salt in her cuts).
Hand's down, i think this is one of the most beautiful songs she's had so far.. i agree with mythology.. it made me cry... a lot
I don't think this song is about her depression at all. I think this song is about a relationship ending. Someone's heart is broken.
"It's probably what's best for you I only want the best for you And if I'm not the best, then you're stuck I tried to sever ties And I ended up with wounds to bind Like you're pouring salt in my cuts"
She is basically saying that breaking up is what's best for the other person. She is saying she just wants the best for the guy even if it means breaking up and if she's not the best then he would be stuck. She tried to let him go by "severing ties" but the guy isn't truly happy. She ended up with "wounds to bind" because she is also heartbroken by having to let him go so that he's not "stuck."
"And I just ran out of band-aids I don't even know where to start 'Cause you can bandage the damage You never really can fix a heart"
Here she is saying that she ran out of band-aids to fix her broken heart. She doesn't know where to start to actually fix her broken heart because her heart isn't physically broken so obviously, a band-aid wouldn't work. Band-aids only help physical damage not emotional damage.
"Even though I know what's wrong How could I be so sure If you never say what you feel, feel? I must have held your hand so tight You didn't have the will to fight I guess you needed more time to heal"
Here she is saying that the guy never told her how he felt and that she must have held onto him for so long knowing that he just wasn't fighting for the relationship anymore. He needed more space and she didn't give that to him.
"Baby, I just ran out of band-aids I don't even know where to start 'Cause you can bandage the damage You never really can fix a heart"
Same as before.
"Yeah, you must be a miracle worker Swearing up and down you can fix what's been broken, yeah Please don't get my hopes up No, no Baby, tell me, how could you be so cruel? Its like you're pouring salt on my cuts."
Here she is talking to the guy saying that he they would need a miracle worker to fix their relationship. The guy keeps saying that he can fix everything knowing that it won't work and he will get her hopes up. "Its like you're pouring salt on my cuts" means that he is just making the damage a lot worse. Salt isn't literally going into her cuts.
@foryouiwill91 I agree with what you think this song is about, but I think it might be about both. a relationship ending and with her struggles on mental health & cutting.
She said in an interview that it's partially about her struggles with bulimia and depression and cutting. It was in the Access Hollywood interview. Because she said like she could cover up all the problems but it never cured her.
Demi basically says that to her the song means that you can keep covering up your problems but it won't ever fix them. That's what the message of the song is.
I actually think its about both; cutting and a relationship, most likely cutting because of a relationship. Her voice sounds so perfect in this song, the melody, and everything flows so pretty and natural. I love this song, one of my favorites off Unbroken.
I agree with you. Last year, I had a bad break up with a boy I was with for 16 months and he decided to make me decide if we should stay together with him being miserable and myself being happy or if we should break up, with myself being miserable and him happy. So I decided why make him be unhappy and miserable, I decided to break up. I was a complete mess after the break up. I was depressed and wasn't sure what to do anymore. He was my first love. We tried a friendship but that ended up with me cutting and going to the hospital because of the depression and cutting. I can see how this song is about the ending of a relationship and cutting from the end of the relationship.
i know this songs kind of about not being able to heal but would it make seance to say it helped me heal after my break up
I agree with foryouwill91, it has nothing to do with her cutting or depression, it's about a relationship ending.
Same as Demi I struggeld with the same issues for a long time, so my opinion about the song is a little diffrent. I guess, that the song describes her feelings after rehab. Everyone expects her to be okay because she got therapy. But I just ran out of bandades I dont even know where to start means that she gets better with her issues but that she has still a long way to go and doesnt really know how to make it. I think the song is dedicated to a new love in her life who might know about her past probelms but doesnt really understand what she still has to face everyday. He wants to help her and try to fix her, wants her to be 'normal' again but she tries to say with this song that no matter how hard everyone and herself as well will try to make everything okay it wont ever be as it was and that no one really can fix her heart again. So the song is like an explantion about how she feels and how she feels about all the reactions from the people who tink she is alright
