Lakehouse Lyrics
Where we are, where we are.
Where we are, where we are,
The floor under our feet whispers out,
Come on in, come on in,
Where it all begins.
On a boat, on a boat.
On a boat, on a boat.
He keeps his only son close by.
In a bag, in a bag.
In a bag on his back.
But she ran down, she ran down.
She ran down to the house.
A fox that gains our trust
But then breaks it as he walks
Away from us, away from us.
In the fall we sleep all day.

I would have to say it's about Childhood. Childhood comforted them because they had no responsibilities. They trusted that it would be there forever while they grew up. I think childhood is the house and the fox. The fire is growing up. Childhood's also "where it all begins". "Can you chase the fire away" Is can you go back to childhood. When you were a kid, you would wait for your shoes to wear out before buying a new pair. Climbing to the top might be readiness for adulthood but she ran down because she was scared of the future. I think that the alternative version with the tallest man refers to their father maybe because when you were a kid, you would think of your dad as a giant. I have no explanation for the kid in the bag on his back, maybe like a baby he's taking care of.

There is also a second version of this song that includes another verse between the first and second:
The tallest man I've ever seen afloat, On a boat, on a boat. On a boat, on a boat. He keeps his only son close by. In a bag, in a bag. In a bag on his back.
In my opinion, this version is much better. Great song.

This song is about two people who have been persuaded into believing (by a fox) that they should burn down a house. As they walk away from the burning house, their is a sense of regret and they return asking each other if they can "chase the fire away".
The additional lyrics, which have been excluded from their album, paint a darker image. A darker image which to them is associated with the house; this probably made it easier for the fox to persuade them to burn the house down. In the end I'm led to believe that the two associate the house with the memory of their father who might have accidentally killed his son, or their brother.
When they sing about sleeping all day in the fall, I feel as if they are saying they are depressed about losing the house.
Either way, great vocals. Just absolutely brilliant
think you're taking the lyrics too literally.

I can connect this to my ex step father..
How he made us all believe he was such a great guy who cared about us, who raised me since i was 6 years old.. "A fox that gains our trust, but then breaks it as he walks Away from us, away from us" but then all of a sudden changed and was really inappropriate towards me (now im 18) "Oh I miss the comfort of this house. Where we are where we are." and i always left when my mom left me home with him, but i had to always return "But she ran down she ran down. She ran down to the house." and the feeling I had towards him.. i just wanted him gone, to me he was the fox and the fire..

I feel like this song about someone who wants someone to chase their fears and problems away. "Can you chase the fire away?" It feels like that whoever wrote this son wanted their fears to be gone. Their trust was broken so now this person needs someone to protect them because they're hurt and they're weaker at this state.

I think the speaker can't handle the emotions in their life. Fire could mean anger, jealousy, revenge, lust etc. They are pleading for someone to chase the fire away. Take away their strong emotions so they don't have to deal with them. Then they can just sleep all day or in other words have no worries again.

If you watch most of their concerts, before they sing this song they all ways say: "This song is about a house, on a lake. And it's called Lakehouse." The only explanation needed is it's a song about a house on a lake.

My interpretation of this song is this: The characters in the song burn down a house. As the song says, "The floor under our feet whispers out Come on in come on in, where it all begins."
They are lured into this house by the memories of this place, and they burn it down, but then something makes them realize that they don't want to burn the house. Maybe the memories. "Can you chase the fire away."
They are soon running away because maybe the police have come to investigate the site. However, one of the group runs down to the lake house and tries to put it out. However, the authorities are there, and she knows she will have to confess what she has done, and who the group is. She is the fox that has betrayed them. The rest of the group is running away and sleeping all day to run from the authorities. The winter, and cold of the law, is catching up on them.
ABOUT THE NAME: The lake, being water, is somehow related to the fire.

I'm really loving this song. It's one of my favorites on their album.

Its a story about a couple who has been hurt by someone who they trusted (A fox that gains our trust, but then breaks it as he walks). They are depressed because they were "burned" by that someone (Can you chase the fire away) and she doesn't even want to leave the house. (She ran down to the house). So they "fall" into a depression and they sleep all day (In the fall, we sleep all day). The man does a little better as he tries to take here out (We climbed up to the top in worn out shoes) and he misses how it was (Oh I miss the comfort of this house)
This is my favorite song on the CD. I'm surprised there aren't more comments on the song.
@4vanetten This meaning fits how I feel abbot my recent Divorce, & how we both became extremely toxic towards each other, being verbally & emotionally abusive, that after 8yrs we finally broke & had to call quits.
