He certainly did earn that reputation.
Ma said, I ain't right
Clutching on you all night
But you're my, you're my guy, Elvis
Slice my starry eye
Light his coat in turpentine
Kill the bitch that bats an eye, Elvis
When I feel your velvet, I can't help it
Hold your frame, whisper your name
When I feel your velvet, I can't help it
And you don't breathe, so you can't leave
And they're comin'
They're comin'
They're comin'
Whoaa no
(Touch) Shackled arms are tight, cause' papa said I cross the line
Carve us in our special time, Elvis
Now it's five by five
Finger paint and circle time
I love you till the day I die, Elvis
When I feel your velvet, I can't help it
Hold your frame, whisper your name
When I feel your velvet, I can't help it
And you don't breathe, so you can't leave
And they're comin'
They're comin'
They're comin'
Whoaa no

Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
So this song is great because if you're not paying attention, it sounds like a really sweet love song where the girl refers to her boyfriend as her velvet Elvis.
And then you read the lyrics and SHIT BRIX.
This song is literally about a velvet Elvis. This is an old fad; it was a framed painting of Elvis painted on black velvet. She's literally singing about a picture of Elvis that she is in love with, and seems to believe is real/alive ("Kill the bitch that bats at eye at Elvis").
More ridiculously, her dad appears to walk in on her while she's masturbating using the picture ("Papa said I cross the line/Caught us in our special time, Elvis").
And then she's sent to an asylum. Holy shit. "Shackled arms are tight" <-- she's in restraints "Now it's five by five" <-- she's living in the psych ward's little room now "Finger paint and circle time" <-- Normal activities you do in a psych ward
Additionally, the chorus of "They're comin'/They're comin'/They're comin'/Oh no!" I think is either her being super paranoid that people want her Elvis, or this just might be referring to professionals/her parents coming to take her away to the hospital.
Basically, this song fucking ROCKS.
I'm not sure about masturbation I could be wrong but the lyrics say "carve" not "caught" now they could be wrong. But it seems like she "crossed the line" when she "Light his coat in turpentine" and something about "slicing" not sure what that means yet, but it seems she was put away because she got violent about his love.
The cross the line was after her dad found them, so it doesn't make sense that it would relate to the "light his coat in turpentine". The "slice my starry eye" is just a reference to a song by the Pixies. Aaaand the lyrics on here are wrong, she is actually saying "caught" and not "carve".
you identified the rest of the pieces so well. Salute!
it's a lyric website. post the frickin lyrics. here you go, people:

I haven't taken this song off repeat in days! Who the fuck writes a song about being in love (REALLY in love) with a framed velvet elvis?! Alex Winston, you're a goddess.
Hey, could someone please give me a brief explanation of what this song is all about? I've been listening to it for a while now and am very, very curious.
Thanks!
Some mad woman.
I posted the explanation (:
This song has to be about masturbation... or at least it strongly strikes me as being about masturbation.
Agreed!

Either way, Velvet Elvis has to be the best euphemism/nickname for a vagina that I've ever heard.
Just tidy that damn quiff up, Elvis!
This song is about love of inanimate objects apparently. She's such a legend. Does anyone else reckon 'slice my starry eye' is a nod to the Pixies? (Debaser)
The Pixies' song was referring to "Un Chien Andalou", the film by Salvador Dali (you prob knew that right?). So it could be a reference to the film or the Pixies song. Or of course neither, or unlikelyly both.

It's great tho how Doolittle still stands out as one of the best albums ever. Every single song on it is amazing! There are a few B+s in among the A-grades, but no poor or mediocre songs on the thing!

If The Pixies were gonna write a song about falling in love with inanimate objects / song about velvet Elvis paintings, they'd make a better one than this. Be wierder too. Still, her voice and the music are nice in this song.
Yeah I did know that haha (and what a freaky film it is) but I like to think she was specifically referencing The Pixies.

I agree with all the Pixies-related praise though. They are the best thing ever ever ever.
Whether you like the music or not, how awesome are trojan pop songs like this?? I love it when songs get played a lot on the radio and most people just nod along to them without ever properly listening to the lyrics. If they ever did stop to listen, they'd probably think twice about criticising metal as being 'too dark' for their simple tastes...!!
See also that awful Foster The People song about Columbine-style shoot-ups. I love bursting peoples' bubbles about that.
My discovery of this song: -Heard it in advert -Sister told me title -First thought was about actually loving Elvis (velvet coat) -Now I know that it's about loving a picture -Checked the lyrics -THIS SONG ROCKS! :3
xxx tiger eyes
Haha u guys sure this isnt about a dildo?
I agree with sisterwifekiller. Masturbation.
Her starry-eye is her vagina. Fingerpainting in circles on her vagina.
Also I think the lyric is 'CAUGHT us in our special time' - not 'carve'.
Clearly the girl is obsessed with elvis, and spends to much time masturbating. As a gay man, I don't I'm hearing things here - I think that was her intention. The song is cute, everyone masturbates. It's a cheeky little song about a near-obsessive crush.
