coming up to the,
go forth,
blossom in your soul,
when you know your heart is light,
electric is the love.
up from the bottom,
in your eyes,
then I know the twilight skies,
are not so broken hearted. (from the end of the line)
it'll be flowing on the streets,
night after night,
just to get through the week,
sometimes it's hard.
out of depression,
rise above,
always searching,
if I know your heart,
electric is the love.
let it pray a little while longer,
it's got a way of passing through man and woman,
in another world,
in another world in the universe.
ooohhhhhhhh
it's its love of electric,
it'll be flowing on the streets,
night after night,
just to get through the week,
sometimes it's hard.
love electricity,
shockwave central,
power on the motherboard,
yes.
overload,
legendary,
heavy glow,
sunshine,
thunder roll,
keep this on,
yes the lantern burn, burn that easy,
and broadcast so raw and neatly,
thunder roll,
sunshine,
work it out.

I think the word "Stylo" is a reference to things that are synthesized or fake. Like anope mentioned, Stylo is a brand of shoe but it is also a pen used on touch screens. There is also a stylo keyboard in which you use a stylo pen to play it. I think the whole song is comparing a feeling of unaccomplishment and fakeness to that of synthesized music or pretty much all manufactured things. Materials are taking over the lives of people. "electric is the love" is like saying the love isn't powered by the natural and magical feeling of love, but a source of limited energy. It will fade eventually.
Haha, this brings it into a minor wider context referencing to how people break up over cellphones. : P

You saying this does make sense - I didn't know about products named stylo, but I did get the feeling that it's all about the fakeness of things, people having relationships over the internet without ever having seen each other (electric love), etc. Well done!

I like the idea of "electric is the love" as attachment to machines. We're coming up to the overload of the world, we all know it's soon, relatively soon. How much can stress can we put on the world before it overloads? I think the video (AMAZING VIDEO) shows this with the band driving Stylo faster and faster until they fly off the edge. Luckily they can transform into a shark sub (Mako sub maybe) This verse still puzzles me: when the mako flies, (a giant fish) up from the bottom, in your eyes, then I know the twilight skies, are not so broken hearted. (from the end of the line)
"in your eyes" is how you perceive the Mako, and this verse suggests that we see the Mako at the bottom, though it's a deadly shark. Maybe anything except us is at the bottom, makes sense really. Do you value the life of one animal over another? Twilight skies are pretty such night skies thanks to streetlights. Why they're broken hearted, I don't know =/
I think its him trying to reconcile with the fact that we're sapping the the life out of earth. When he looks down into the water(the eyes of the earth---sometimes the eyes of a person can look like pools of water ;]) and sees a mako swimming to the surface, it reminds him that there is still something completely natural surviving without any interference of technology. Then he realizes that perhaps he shouldn't feel hopeless and brokenhearted when he looks at the electric illuminated sky. There is still hope.

You're definitely in the right direction.

I've been listening to this song for years, but only recently my thoughts swirl around the lyrics. I'm forced to conclude that trying to understand the music lyrically makes the album and the band even more brilliant and enjoyable. Did not know that was possible.

I think this song is about the race to freedom through technology and specifically the singularity.
at the beginning of the video the car marked with stylo is just looking down at the floor and can't really see where it is going and then you see its smoking already damaged and one of the cartoon gorilla guys has been shot and he smokes like a machine, I think that represents freedom and technology and the idea that we don't really know where we are going and are in pretty bad shape at the moment as a society.
It's a race against our current condition, the authorities and then some other element which Bruce Willis represents, possibly the love of violence, you can see he takes great joy in trying to catch them and shooting their mirror whilst the cop crawls desperately for his doughnuts.
Towards the end the stylo car speeds up (like how technology is increasing at an exponential rate) and then magically transforms in to a submarine shark thing over the cliff and escapes whilst bruce willis is left behind thinking they are dead.

i must agree with the idea that love is becoming some limited source of energy, or something fake -- it explains why bobby says "sometimes its hard" after "this love is electric, it'll be flowing on the street, night after night, just to get through the week." ... its something hard to maintain because it is electric ... it needs to constantly be recharged, perhaps? then he explains that "there's only one way" ...
our attachments to machines is making us lose valor of things ... like the constant reference to love, or the mako (as an animal), or the twiight skies ...

I think this song and video together paint an interesting picture. The car is our society, average people, being chased. The car in the video is already shot up and damaged. At first the car(our society) is chased by inept police who fail to catch us. Then another figure chases the car(our society) in a similarly fast car(another society). The sky's darken when the shadowy figure begins his chase which symbolizes and suggests that he has some supernatural power or controls some supernatural power. The shadowy figure(played by Bruce Willis) gleefully shoots at the stylo car from different angles, terrorizing it's occupants and forcing them to speed faster. The stylo car then careens off of a cliff into the water and is transformed. When you factor in the lyrics with video, I think it's saying the system is overloaded and its coming to an end. This is the point the stylo car careens off the cliff. The stylo car which represents our society careens off the cliff and is transformed into something else and swims away. The lyrics suggest to me the message that our love of electricity and energy has changed us fundamentally as human beings.

I believe in this world of The Plastic Beach, Bobby is Nature, seeing everything happen, but also falling for Stylo, or The Electric. 2D in this case also loves Stylo, but its noticing that shes getting too big too bare and its becoming a problem. Mos Def is a sort of spokesperson for Stylo, saying how all the power and electricity is good or a completely metaphorical voice.
"Love electricity shock-wave central power on the motherboard yes Push up to overload legendary heavy glow sunshine thunder-roll keep this on yes the lantern burns firm and easy and broadcast so raw and neatly thunder-roll sunshine work it out"
- He basically gives you the whole song, or the of the story, in a metaphor, and tells you in the end to "work it out", telling you to figure it out. My guess it means that Human Nature purposely gave Stylo power, then it became incredible, and in a way became part of nature.
"overload, overload, overload coming on to the"
- 2D aka Human Nature, has noticed how powerful Stylo/The Electric/, has become to powerful, and theres too much of it to control.
"Oh stylo go for blossom in your soul when you know your heart is light electric is the love"
- Stylo/The Electric, the one 2D/Human Nature loves, is asking for her to follow her dreams of electricity, fakeness, and plastic. Human Nature wants her to be happy, but he knows she doesn't love him, but wants to give her what she wants.
"If it's love, it's electric it'll be flowing on the streets night after night just to get through the week"
- Explaining that the electric love depends highly on itself to stay alive, therefore it needs to grow to live.(This idea i came up with last, not 100% on it.)

Phase Three begins!!
Demon Days was tinged with political themes, so I'm expecting Plastic Beach to touch upon issues that are important to the creators of gorillaz, particularly Damon Albarn.
Very interesting-- Stylo is a manufacturer of shoes, & Damon already has one song named for a shoe (Trimm Trabb).

it seems to be an ode to their car named Stylo, which seems to be breaking down.
If anyone can figure out the lyrics in Mos Defs rap, and the backing lyrics during 2-D's part, lemme know.
Digging the song, excited for the album!
the backing vocals in 2d's singing seems deliberately random

For some reason I look forward to part of the song when Bobby says "That's what I'm talking about." This song isn't a single in my opinion BUT it damn good.

gorillaz4eva as more or less got it, but a few things I heard differently:
Oh Stylo...
Go blossom in your soul
When you know your heart is light
-
If this love is electric
It'll be flowing on the street
Night after night
