High life
Greetings loved ones
Let's take a journey
I know a place
Where the grass is really greener
Warm, wet n' wild
There must be something in the water
Sippin' gin and juice
Laying underneath the palm trees
(Undone)
The boys
Break their necks
Try'na to creep a little sneak peek
(At us)
You could travel the world
But nothing comes close
To the golden coast
Once you party with us
You'll be falling in love
Ooh oh ooh oh oh ooh
California girls
We're unforgettable
Daisy dukes
Bikinis on top
Sun-kissed skin
So hot
We'll melt your popsicle
Ooh oh ooh
Ooh oh ooh
California girls
We're undeniable
Fine, fresh, fierce
We got it on lock
West coast represent
Now put your hands up
Ooh oh ooh
Ooh oh ooh
Sex on the beach
We don't mind sand in our stilettos
We freak
In my jeep
Snoop doggy-dog on the stereo oh oh
You could travel the world
But nothing comes close
To the golden coast
Once you party with us
You'll be falling in love
Ooh oh ooh ooh oh ooh
California girls
We're unforgettable
Daisy dukes
Bikinis on top
Sun-kissed skin
So hot
We'll melt your popsicle
Ooh oh ooh
Ooh oh ooh
California girls
We're undeniable
Fine, fresh, fierce
We got it on lock
West coast represent
Now put your hands up
Ooh oh ooh
Ooh oh ooh
Toned, tan
Fit and ready
Turn it up 'cause its gettin' heavy
Wild, wild west coast
These are the girls I love the most
I mean the ones
I mean like she's the one
Kiss her, touch her
Squeeze her buns
The girl's a freak
She drive a jeep
And live on the beach
I'm okay
I won't play
I love the bay
Just like I love L.A.
Venice Beach
And Palm Springs
Summertime is everything
Home boys
Bangin' out
All that ass
Hanging out
Bikinis, zucchinis, martinis
No weenies
Just a king
And a queenie
Katy my lady
(Yeah)
And looky here baby
(Uh huh)
I'm all up on ya
'Cause you representing California (oh yeah)
California girls
We're unforgettable

This song is def a twin to "Unfair" (a song she has been quoted as saying is about falling in love with someone who is already in a relationship) so it is presumably about the same person. Given the references to buying an apartment and not being able to see her love interest "after tonight," it's most likely that she's moving away and she'll "wait a day to break the bad news" (i.e. notifying him that she's leaving once she's already gone).
And, of course, the fact that she sees in him a fellow "idealist" and "dreamer" (terms commonly given to people with the INFP personality on the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)) portends that she'll always be left wondering if they would've been perfect together.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
An anthem for stupid girls. Seriously, who else thinks how they party makes them desirable? Besides, people of CA are nothing like this. Sex & stilettos on the beach? Really? Perhaps a few ultra-wealthy girls live this way. So basically it's a song bragging about daddy being rich. Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favor of wealth. It's entitlement that stinks. And this song reeks of it.
Despite the fact that it's being played ad nauseum, we'll all forget this one in a few years.
The way I see it, even though it may be stereotypical, it's just showing appreciation for the West Coast. Besides, I'm fine with a little bit of stereotypes in music because if she were to write about every single California Girl out there, then it would be a two-week-long song, y'know?

Also, it doesn't matter what people draw from the lyrics. If you want deep, then go listen to some of her other songs that actually do have some depth to them. I'm fine with this song being shallow because the meaning is written in the title. It's all about appreciating the California Girl, no matter who they are. It's fun, it's catchy, and I'm glad that it's the hit of Summer 2010.

I respect your opinion, but you're just trying to dig deeper when the song meaning itself is on the surface. I'm sorry if I offend you, I really don't mean to, but I'm just trying to explain my viewpoint, and I hope I explained it well. Happy Summer! :D
I know this is a little out there, but what if it was intended as a satire.
@SteveOrama and @AnonymousUser I originally thought it could have been satire, but watch this interview with Katy Perry explaining her reasons for the song:

youtube.com/watch
This is a great song for the summer. :)

FAVOURITE SONG <3333333333 shes amazing
no matter who says shit about katy,no matter how undeniably catchy her tunes are (wether you like them or not) or whatevers going on i still have to dance to most of her songs when i hear them. it's instinctive :D
this is one to play with the top down =) i'm definitely a california girl!! (or should i say gurl? :P)
you're dumb
This isn't that fun to dance and sing to when you are representing the East coast! haha! But it is still a great summer anthem.
If your representing the east coast, your probably listening to Jay-z's Empire State of Mind, Katy perry based this song off that one.
hehe i m frum the EAST coast but heyy i live in california soo yea. this dong is just complimenting california gurls. and saying they r all that.

Duhhhh, it's because we are.
