Heavy in Your Arms Lyrics
My beloved was weighed down
My arms around his neck
My fingers laced to crown
My feet dragged across the ground
And he took me to the river
Where he slowly let me drown
My love's an iron ball
Wrapped around your ankles
Over the waterfall
Heavy in your arms
I'm so heavy, heavy
Heavy in your arms
All this killing time?
Are you strong enough to stand
Protecting both your heart and mine?
Who's the killer in the crowd?
The one who creeps in corridors
And doesn't make a sound
My love's an iron ball
Wrapped around your ankles
Over the waterfall
My love's an iron ball
Wrapped around your ankles
Over the waterfall
Heavy in your arms
I'm so heavy, heavy
So heavy in your arms
"I love you" never felt like any blessing
Oh
Whispering like it's a secret
Only to condemn the one who hears it
With a heavy heart
(I'm so) Heavy, heavy, I'm so heavy in your arms
(I'm so) Heavy, heavy, I'm so heavy in your arms
(I'm so) Heavy, heavy, I'm so heavy in your arms
My beloved was weighed down
My arms around his neck
My fingers laced to crown
But he never let me down
When he had me in his arms
My feet never touched the ground

A story about unrequited love. Maybe the feelings weren't mutual, or the other person wasn't ready for the intensity of that relationship, or both. For whatever reason, the love-interest couldn't meet her half-way.
It seems like cheating may have been involved ("Who is the betrayer / Who's the killer in the crowd? The one who creeps in corridors / And doesn't make a sound").
She admits to being a drag, being too much for him, even seems to blame herself for her downfall. Whether or not she deserves it, he somehow let her down, but she's unable to let go ("wrapped around your ankles"), & she keeps clinging on b/c she loves him.
I get most of your point, but why is she saying: 'but he never let me down?' If he's trying to get rid of her? The inconsistency isn't in your opinion, but in the lyrics

I think there was a time when he never let her down -- but that was before ("He never let me down / When he held me in his arms"). But at some point, he let her go. I think the inconsistency might just be her reminiscing on a different stage in the relationship, back when he loved her, or was more committed/connected to the relationship.

You're good ^^

Another lyrical masterpiece from Florence. To me, this song is about loving someone too much. Plain and simple, Florence loves this guy much too intensely. And although the love may not necessarily be unrequited, it is definitely unbalanced. Her heart is so full with love, that it is too heavy for her or her lover to carry. She loves with such an intensity that she feels guilty, and is clearly ashamed of the fact that it is un-matched. ("I love you" never felt like any blessing/ Whisper it like it's a secret")
Beautiful and dark, a fantastic song!

'Are you strong enough to stand, Protecting both your heart and mine?'
Genious.
You spelled genius wrong. Irony?

God, she's amazing. Also, Twilights done it again amazingly. Honestly, their soundtracks are the only good thing about it. :P
-I totally agree. Honestly, i hate that the Twilight Saga always has a pretty amazing soundtrack. I want to hate all of it. But this girl has some soul, and thats undeniable.

I disagree that this is about unrequited love. But it could be about Bella/Jacob or Bella/Edward... or even visa versa. I think it's the later.
Bella saw herself as a burden and laments that they could all be killed because of her. She also felt guilty for hurting Jake and Edward as she tried to hang onto both of them...
The person singing is admitting that they are DIFFICULT to be in love with. For some reason, they think their love is a BURDEN to their beloved. They worry that they are dragging their beloved down. This is such an amazing metaphor.
"My love has concrete feet, my love's an iron ball Wrapped around your ankles, over the waterfall I'm so heavy. Heavy. Heavy in your arms"
She is a burden, but she loves him and he loves her as she is still being HELD by him. It's mutual.
And this verse seems to be about a literal danger that her beloved is protecting her from. That would fit in nicely with the story too.
"And is it worth the wait, All this killing time? Are you strong enough to stand, Protecting both your heart and mine? Who is the betrayer Who's the killer in the crowd? The one who creeps in corridors And doesn't make a sound"
But here she is saying that even though her love for the beloved was perhaps dangerous and a burden, he rose to the occasion and never let her down.
"I was a heavy heart to carry My beloved was weighed down My arms around his neck My fingers laced a crown I was a heavy heart to carry But he never let me down When he held me in his arms My feet never touched the ground"
I'm not sure what the first verse means "...where he slowly let me drown," except that taken in context with the rest of it, it could mean that she is overwhelmed by his love.
I guess that is why I mostly think of Bella and Edward when I hear this song. It's a difficult, and at times dangerous, relationship. They are completely vulnerable because of the overwhelming love they have for each other and the relationship has meant sacrifice... but in spite of it all they remain steadfast.
You're dead-on with what you see in this song; I see it too! The lines "And he took me to the river, where he slowly let me drown;" for me, refers that love is like a river's flow between 2 people who discover love's power together. What an incredible, intense, metaphor line! When Edward and Bella fully committed their love to each other (meaning their engagement, since this song is in TW Eclipse, ), it was like a euphoric, serious, consuming, mutual "drowning!" They plunged into love at the "waterfall' too; it's a metaphor for the power of entering into...

They plunged into love at the "waterfall' too; it's a metaphor for the power of entering into a loved relationship with someone! Both Bella and Edward had been so unhappy, almost depressed with their lives before they met; their coming to love each other, saved the other. Yes, there are so many dangers for them; but they uphold each other! I see burdens/perils in the 'concrete feet' and 'the iron ball' also.
The 'crown,' I think, is that gorgeous bronze hair of Edward's; Bella loves and caresses his handsome features! Edward was 'weighed down' in his responsibilities for Bella's life, her family, her willingness to sacrifice having no children and her soul;--Edward was always in awe of Bella's complete trust; all in the name of love and living forever with Edward! Bella saw how much Edward loved her too, in spite of the dangers and sacrifices! It makes the overall tone/mood of the song "heavy!" Love is a serious and committed responsibility! This song leaves me breathless when I hear it every time; it's 1 of my favorite songs in the Twilight Saga!
Only bc a good friend of mine has successfully persuaded me to accompany her to every "Twilight" movie (since a few years back), thought I'd add that she doesn't sacrifice her soul or having no children. I'll have to take a listen to the rest, and I always thought there were a few Evanescence songs that are suitable for the film. Have the books, just haven't read em. Sometimes other stories are better than the best sellers!

Guys, this song was written for the movie Eclipse, whether you like it or not, LOL. Here is an excerpt of an interview with Florence herself (credit, songfacts.com):
"This dark and moody cut was included on the soundtrack of the third Twilight movie, Eclipse. Florence Welch explained to The Independent June 11, 2010 why she wanted to be involved. "I thought it would be something fun to do; I'd never written a song for a soundtrack before. It's an interesting exercise as a songwriter. You're thinking about it more in a visual tone and imagining a film score, which I think is really exciting. They didn't specifically say what bit of the movie it was going to be in or anything, but they did say it should have nothing about vampires or werewolves in it. I don't think they wanted anything with specific references to the story; it's not a musical, opera type thing — they just wanted something that fitted the emotional tone of it. I just thought about some of the themes in the book and wrote the song." Florence told The Independent that she is a fan of the Twilight books. "My sister and I read them to each other last Christmas. It's pure escapism. We get really excited for the films, they're fun." "
Also- the song was not featured during the actual movie at all. It played as the second song of the ending credits only. (The song playing during the Victoria and Riley scene was "Rolling In on a Burning Tire" by The Dead Weather.)

i really love this song. The song's pretty straight forward. i think the narrator of this song feels as if she has too much baggage to be good enough for the man she loves. she feels as if her love is a burden, weighing him down. (I was a heavy heart to carry/ My feet dragged across the ground). I think she feels selfish for loving him because her problems only add to his own. I think the line " And he took me to the river, Where he slowly let me drown" is her saying that she doesn't blame him for getting rid of her. The last verse tells us that the man she loves is unlike the rest because he is stronger than the others. He is strong enough to protect the both of them.
I thought the same in a way! :)

I agree with you fully
I agree with you fully

wow i can't stop replaying this song. but as I can see where all of you have come from i started to look at it from a different angle:::
personally, i think that possibly the boy or her lover doesn't trust himself with how their love has bloomed. the song is being said through what she feels is her fault or her doing of why their fear is pulling them apart or how its letting an opening far enough for another to discourage them. maybe she wants to pull him with her to almost let him at least get a taste of what their love could be... and it awakens him to whats been in front of him this whole time.
either way-love the song and i love the complexity laced within-and all the metaphorical stories.

Oh come on, this is so about Bella and Jacob. You guys are all right about it being about unrequited love and how he holds her up and never lets her down but she can't love him back. That's the premise of the relationship between Bella and Jacob- hence why it was used for the Eclipse soundtrack. It's such an amazing powerful song- I wish they'd used it for the kiss.

I think this song is about the subject of the song being depressed and it bringing down the relationship (obviously the last verse says that he is strong enough to handle her sadness)
This song rings soooooo very true to me as I am a bit of a complicated one to love.... and it always has put a strain on any relationship I have. I feel guilty with the depression that I have, especially as I love someone I should be happy to be there, with him, because he does make me happy.
Its very sad, being sad is.
