Blackout

This is obviously about more than just a relationship. The whole album is about WWII, so I think it's about the detonation of the atomic bomb in Japan and the moments right after. The lyrics in "Burning In The Skies" and just the title of "Fallout" also seem to carry meaning about the nukes and Japan. But Shinoda's line "Floating out as colors fill the light, we look up from the ground in fields of paper white, floating up you pass us in the night, the future gazing out a past to overwrite." directly seems to be describing the bombers passing by, as a nuclear explosion lights up the "fields of paper white." The part "No you'll never get it inside, you push it back down, blackout, blood in your eye" is something I can't really relate to the rest of the song... it just seems like a sexual struggle ending with a black eye, but I thought "Blackout" itself had something more to do with the detonation of the atomic bombs. So I can't really make sense of this song by itself, but this is a concept album so it is meant to be critiqued and understood as an overall album, not song by song.

Have any of you thought about it being about government. I think that it is pretty clear that it is you can tell especially from the line "you take and take and take" and just read all the other lyrics to the song it is about corruption in all the governments around the world and they take and never give back to the people, they pretty much control your lives.

The album isn't necessarily completely about the atomic bomb and WWII. The album is all socio-political, and talking about the NOW, not the past. The song is titled Blackout because it is about post catastrophe, and in my mind, takes place in the near future.

The beginning of the song, "I'm stuck in this bed you made/alone with this sinking feeling/I saw through the words you said/to the secrets you've been keeping." Thats humanity right now. We live in a society where everything is spoon fed to us. Do this, watch this, eat this, look like this, etc. (The bed you made). The sinking feeling is the rising in consciousness of the people. As more and more corruption is exposed and parts of our history come into question, collectively we are beginning to realize that something is wrong. The next two lines adding support to that take on it.

"Blackout. Blood in your eye". This is post cataclysm. We are in rebellion, and blood is in the eyes of the power as the fight and fail to maintain control over the masses.

"You say that it's not your fault/And swear that I am mistaken/You said it's not what it seems". This is the game they will play and always have played when they are exposed. Only this next time, they WILL be held accountable "No remorse for the trust your breaking/You run to the back you fall/Suffocate in the mess your making".

"You can't get enough/You take and take and take and take and take/Fuck it are you listening" The power continues to take and take to make themselves more powerful (the military industrial complex). Because of this, we feel like they dont hear us. They choose to ignore us, because of their power.

"Blackout Blood in your eye Blackout Blood in your eye Blackout Blood in your eye" This is all post cataclysm/revolution chaos. The power has blood in their eye from the fight that will be brought to them, while they force a blackout upon the masses. Cutting off comunications, etc.

"Floating out as colors fill the light/We look up from the ground in fields of paper white/Floating up you pass us in the night/The future gazing out a past to overwrite" At this point, the song changes in tone. From my perspective, the battle is over. The masses have won. They now have a past they need to rewrite because of being lied to and manipulated for so long by the power.

Now here is where everything is REALLY up to what you believe. Here is what I personally believe they are talking about.

"So come down far below/We've been waiting to collect the things you know/Come down far below/We've been waiting to collect what you've let go" In my eyes, this is the masses, looking to extraterrestrials for help in bringing back a semblance of order and peace on earth. I've come to this conclusion because of the title of the album and the cover. A thousand suns, in my mind, is referring to ships filling up our skies. The album cover is a picture of the sun, with spots of the sun being blocked out by objects in its direct path. What would these objects be? I guess thats all up to your interpretation. I would love to know what Linkin Park really intended these lyrics to mean.

Expect more socio-political songs like this and the rest of A Thousand Suns, on Linkin Park's next album. That is the direction they are headed.

It really sounds like someone alone with just their thoughts screaming out at them

You push it back down, get it inside, screaming lessons for noobs.

Maybe this is just because I'm going through this right now...but this song made me identify with low self-esteem. Even the first lines, "I'm stuck in this bed you made, alone with a sinking feeling." And the "secrets you've been keeping." "Suffocate in the mess you've been making." "You push it back down."

A person with low-self esteem has a skewed perception. They think that they are worthless and that they ruin things rather than make them better/contributing.They think people hate them when really they don't. They think they aren't talented. But that isn't the reality of the situation. Hence the line: "blood in your eye."

So this voice in their head that fuels the low self-esteem works on lies. It works on making sure that any little positive thing that has happened is brushed away as 'luck' or an 'unexpected coincidence.' It isolates them from people who really do care about them. Because of the false threat of hatred.

"No remorse for the trust you're breaking" could refer to how low-self esteem can manifest and ruin any credibility you have in yourself and even that others have in you. Then this voice....builds on that gain and grows stronger in the manipulation. "You push it back down" refers to the actual person's efforts to fight against the low self-esteem. By questioning the logic or just flat out ignoring it.

By the end of the song (when it slows down) the actual person has beat this demeaning voice in their head. "The future gazing out the past to overwrite." And they are now in the process of healing. The "we've been waiting to collect" parts probably refer to a more third-person group point of view...where these people want to understand what this one person went through in their time of low self-esteem.

Sorry Guys but i have To say it is Not about a relationship nor government its about chester's addiction which he was struggling with for a long time and like many other song they wrote about addiction , he simply says you should do it "im stuck in this bed you made" he refers to his addiction as a bed which he is so attached to , and if u read the lyrics with this idead the rest is clear you should never get inside , you push it backdown RIP chester

This song is very uplifting. I was reading an astronomical interpretation of myself and was astounded by how accurate it was! This song came on while I was reading it and I instantly made the connection! At the beginning of this song, it describes the fact that there are lies that we tell ourselves.

"I’m stuck in this bed you made me with a sinking feeling." This refers to our self esteem. We are the ones who create our self esteem, but it is also self esteem itself that creates our doubts about ourselves. I’m in bad shape, I wish my personality was better, why am I still single? These are all questions that somebody with low self esteem would ask himself.

"I saw through the words you said, to the secrets you’ve been keeping. It’s written upon your face, all the lies how they cut so deeply." We all lie to ourselves about how bad of a person we are sometimes. The important thing to do is to love yourself. And these lies we tell ourselves really do stick with us, and it is so difficult to get rid of them and change our mentalities.

"You can’t get enough you take, and take and take and never say. No! You’ve gotta get it inside!" It’s easy for our low self esteem to ambush us. We are unaware when it happens, and this usually results in depression. Therefore when it happens, it doesn’t stop happening and it continues to happen. There always comes a point in our life when we become aware of this and say, "No!". We decide to fight this and overcome our low self esteem! Being harmonious with ourselves as a goal. But this is not easy. The self esteem fights back saying "You’ve gotta get it inside!" It won’t let go and you are now left fighting this internal battle.

"You push it back down! You push it back down! No! You’ll never get it inside! Push it back down! Black out! Blood in your eye!" This is when you continue to fight against your low self esteem. You keep trying to push it down but it keeps on persisting, NOW saying, "No! You’ll never get it inside!" This is referring to your harmony within yourself. Your low self esteem is trying to convince you that you will never achieve this goal and you will continue to doubt yourself and therefore never get anything done. "You push it back down! Blackout! Blood in your eye!" You still fight back. "Blackout! Blood in your eye!" This refers to the struggle you go through in terms of beating your self esteem. It really is a painful process and this song goes a lot deeper than fighting your inner low self esteem. This song is also mainly about breaking a habit. The battle you go through in breaking this habit.

"You say that it’s not your fault, and swear that I am mistaken. You said it’s not what it seems." Your habit/self esteem begins to play mind tricks on you. You begin to think that it’s not you that is creating the problem. It’s the circumstances in which you are in, and other people that are causing you to be this way. You start blaming others instead of taking responsibility.

"No remorse for the trust you’re breaking" Your habit/self esteem doesn’t care about how much it is destroying you. In fact, the overall goal is for it to destroy you. Now that you are in the process of battling your inner negativity, you recognize what is really happening here.

"You run but then back you fall, suffocate in the mess you’re making." Now that you are trying to battle this habit/self esteem, you keep trying to run towards it to attack, but you keep falling down and therefore falling into the same temptations. This damages you. It’s not easy, and changing is a very painful process.

"You can’t get enough you take, and take and take and take and take. Forget it! Are you listening?" He repeats this again. Your habit/ego still craves to destroy you. But then frustrated, you cry out, "Forget! Are you listening?"

“No! You’ve gotta get it inside! You push it back down! You push it back down! No! You’ll never get it inside! Push it back down! You push it back down! No! You’ve gotta get it inside! You push it back down! You push it back down! No! You’ll never get it inside! Push it back down! Black out! Blood in your eye” Your habit/ego ignores you. It starts to become overwhelmed as you keep battling it. Finally, you are winning. But your habit/ego is fighting back. And it is fighting back hard!

After this chorus is sung, there is a music break. There is a lot of chaos going on in the song while the habit’s/ego’s voice is being remixed and repeated over and over again. Your habit/ego keeps trying to fight back, but you keep pushing it down again and again. And it looks like the climax is ending, and that you are winning!

Finally, all the chaos and loud noise begins to fade away. Then, there is soft and beautiful music beginning to play. At last, you have won the battle. Your habit/ego is finally gone. He no longer exists.

“Floating down, as colors fill the light.” You are finally free, and you come back down to the Earth that you deserve to enjoy, as you watch your habit/ego dissipating in the sky (as colors fill the light).

“We look up from the ground, in fields of paper white.” People begin to see and recognize that you have changed. The fields of paper white refers to that something that is missing in this world, and that something is you. And as you continue to float down, the world becomes better and better before you know it.

“And floating up, you pass us in the night.” This is referring to the habit/ego that is now aimlessly wondering through the night, hoping to haunt you and take control over you again. However, now that you have defeated it, it will only continue to float away and pass you every night.

“A future gazing out, a past to overwrite.” A new ego is born and emerges from you. This is the ego of self-respect and love. It can see a bright future being held for you and will stop at nothing to help you achieve it. Soon, your old habit/ego begins to fade away and no longer exists. The old habit/ego is your past, and now it is finally gone. Your new ego overwrites the old.

“So come down, far below. We’ve been waiting to collect the things you know.” This is referring to the countless blessings that this world has in store for you. The world has been waiting to receive the triumph, testimony, and knowledge that you have, now that you have overcome your old ego. This is your chance to share your testimony, reach out to others that are going through the same thing you went through, and touch lives with your story. The world is asking you to come down far below your dissipated past, so that you may share your blessings.

“Come down, far below. We’ve been waiting to collect what you’ve let go.” There is another part of the world that wants to collect the waste of your past that you threw into the sky as you started coming down. This part of the world wants to collect what you let go so that it can no longer exist.

As the song starts to come to a slowing stop, the words, “Come down, oh.” are repeated over and over again. You are going towards the outside world full of countless blessings and it keeps telling you to come and come, so you keep yourself on your straight path. The world is determined to share your gift.

Finally, after all of your sweat, blood in your eye, and tears, you have one your battle and came at the top, triumphant.

At last, you are free.

It's a song about a guy who's ex is a drug addict and her addiction ruined the chances of them getting back together.

"You take and take and take and take! Fuck it, are you listening! NOOOOO!!"

He tried to stop her but she didn't listen.

She promises she'll quit but breaks the promise. shes so far gone she has "no remorse for the trust" she's "breaking."

"Suffocate in the mess you're making. You can't get enough." Her addiction has taken her completely.

Everytime he would say something she would "Push it back down." Downplaying his intervention.

Later, the heartbreak causes a mental collapse in him and he passes out outside. He looks up at the sky, hurt and badly damaged but decides to move on with the promise of a new day.
