Mine Lyrics
Left a small town, never looked back
I was a flight risk, with a fear of falling
Wondering why we'd bother with love, if it never lasts
As we're lying on the couch
The moment I can see it
Yes, yes
I can see it now
You put your arm around me for the first time
You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter
You are the best thing that's ever been mine
And there's a drawer of my things at your place
You learn my secrets and you figure out why I'm guarded
You say we'll never make my parent's mistakes
We got nothing figured out
When it was hard to take
Yes, yes
This is what I thought about
You put your arm around me for the first time
You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter
You are the best thing that's ever been mine
You saw I started to believe for the first time
You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter
You are the best thing that's ever been mine
You said everything was slipping out of our hands
I went out crying and you followed me out to the streets
Causes it's all i've ever known
When you took me by surprise
You said I never leave you alone
I remember how we felt sitting by the water
And everytime I look at you it's like the first time
I fell in love with acareless man's careful daughter
She is the best thing that's ever been mine
Make it last
Hold on
Never turn back
You are the best thing that's ever been mine
Gonna make it last
And I can see it
I can see it now

I love that Taylor's growing up here, it's nice to see that she's taking a route that doesn't involve stripping her clothes off for a magazine. She's a keeper.
I feel like this sentiment has been expressed quite a bit already, but I guess I'll repeat it. This song is great for her younger fans with a memorable hook, singable chorus, and the ability to relate with her audience. However, I feel like that there's not enough growth musically. The song is like a clone of all her other songs. Maybe it's just because it's the lead single but it still sounds like a cross with a fairytale like Love Story and a definite hit like Jump then Fall and a storytelling like Fearless. You don't need a full band behind you all the time. While it starts drawing back into country, it lost the charm that Tim McGraw and Our Song had with country audiences, but into the charm that formulaic and simple songs like Should've Said No had with kids. White Horse was an absolute gem as it combined the Taylor quality with a really meaningful, yet simple, concept. I seriously expected maturity to come with musical talent associated with more songs like that, and not just a song about how she's just growing up in age.
So, to the song. Obviously it's a song that kids can sing along to because they like the line "You made a rebel of a careless man's careful daughter/You are the best thing that's ever been mine" and not really have to know what it means. But more mature audiences would pick up that it that the careless man is a father who carelessly loved/had sex and had a child with a girl earlier than he was ready for (teenage pregnancy? maybe but not necessarily). This is a definite country theme coming out here that's covered a lot. The main girl character is now careful in everything she does because she's been scarred with parents who have apparently failed to successfully show true love exists in a stable relationship.
She meets a boy who's in college (suggesting that she is also? aww our little Tay is growing up!) who already proves that he's stable in character because he's taking responsibility for himself since we get the impression that he not exactly "required" to go to college and wasn't forced by anyone who would pay his full tuition. She, however, is a bit unstable but is a good match for him as she is also grounded, hardworking, and takes responsibility for herself. But, she's got a fear of falling, a double meaning as she's scared of falling in love but also that she's scared of failing herself. I feel like that IS a double meaning here, anyone?
They are obviously going through some tough times financially but have got each other for support and always dream of times when things are more stable. They remember their young love (this was what Fearless was all about, how to fall fearlessly into any kind of love, have that sweet blindness that would eventually carry them into a relationship) when they "sat by the water", and all their beginning dates, etc. The chorus here says that she's a rebel, but it doesn't necessarily mean teen angst or something like that, but that she'd never expect to fall into love because she never wanted the kind of mismatched love that her parents had. She's a rebel because she rebelled against her own beliefs and loved.
Fast forward to when they're out of college. They're still together but are now officially on their own and "taking on the world together". Apparently they haven't moved in together, but they're sharing the same situation with "bills to pay" and really have nothing figured out about life financially and generally. It's hard, but she thinks of the young love that they had in the beginning and holds on to the belief that the innocence of it is still in both of them even though they've both matured. She's got a drawer of things at his place and eventually he learns about her history. He says that "we'll never make my parent's mistakes" which could have several interpretations whichever way you think about it. Some fans who love her for her innocence will believe that they'll never have sex before they're married, or others will say that they won't mess up their relationship with sex until they're ready mentally with their current situation. I do think it's about sex because this all ties into the line with a careless man, and seeing that this is a love song, I doubt it could mean anything else. Anyway, she's guarded and they're gonna wait, and this shows that he really does love her for her.
They're going on with life and are past the beginning hopeful stages and are beginning to doubt their own dreams and beliefs of making it in life. Everything seems to be falling apart and their fighting takes a precedence in their lives. She remembers the crucial fight that they had that really turns her into a rebel and her previous notions of unstable love around. He says that "everything's slipping out of their hands", another double meaning that she takes to mean that while their financial situation is slipping, their love is also dying and slipping out of their hands. She takes it to heart and runs out crying. He goes after her, and while she's guarded for a breakup, maybe something along the lines of "we need to take a little time off" as she's heard that so many times in other relationships when things get hard, he surprises her by saying that he's staying by her side.
This is probably the best part in the song that is truly hopeful about love and really echoes Taylor's own sentiments that true love is out there. True love isn't just about finding someone that you have an attraction with, but something that both sides need to work on and search out and find that balance. Here, their love isn't mismatched because they're on the same level, and she finally realizes it. His feelings are directly parallel to what she feels as they both remember and hold onto that young love and know that simplest and most innocent form of it is still in them (I know, I'm so mushy). He remembers the SAME things as her when they both feel pressured and unable face life, and loves her because he knows that she's there. So, together they've both reached an understanding and a new level in their relationship and both are gonna hold on. She finally sees the same vision of stability that she had before, but it has better base and more meaning to it.
This is a really good "coming of age" song for her, and she did the smart thing by making it her lead single, reminding her fans that she's growing up. I still hold strongly to my beliefs that I said before that it lacks maturity in musical talent. It's catchy, but it needs another element to it that would really say that she is growing as an artist. Here, she expresses her views on relationships beautifully, but I feel that she rushes into the story telling because the chorus is emphasized too much. Everyone said she was "wise beyond her years" because of her ability to story tell in Mary's Song on her first album, but musically, the song still reminded us that it was a 16 year old telling us the story of old love. It sounds like that here. She's a teenager that's telling the story of 20-23 year olds. Just because she's telling their story doesn't mean that she IS 20-23 years old. I fully believe that she has the capability to grow musically, and not necessarily lose her audience in any way. She's got the incredible gift of writing hooks and I know she can use that to write great songs with a great amount of musical maturity and variety which will show that she's growing as an artist.
8/25, can't wait!!
I like & agree with most of your very in-depth review, but the only part I don't know about is if this is an auto-biographical song. From what I understand, her parents are still together, so I wonder if she's writing this from someone's story...Which isn't a bad thing, but that's what catches me. Unless there's tension between her parents, which could very well be true, obviously their lives aren't our concerns. Also, I don't think the song is about sex. I think the character is scared of being in a relationship at all, I interpret the "mistakes" of her parents...

Unless there's tension between her parents, which could very well be true, obviously their lives aren't our concerns. Also, I don't think the song is about sex. I think the character is scared of being in a relationship at all, I interpret the "mistakes" of her parents that they rushed into a relationship or something, and that the dad might have left ["careless man"], and so growing up she thinks that no relationship will last and love isn't worth anything ["Wondering why we'd bother with love, if it never lasts"] and after they fight she thinks he'll automatically leave [bracing myself for goodbye, 'cause that's all I've ever known"]. But this boy breaks that idea for her ["you made me believe in love, for the first time" & "you took me by surprise and said I'll never leave you alone"--sounds like the dad left the mom all alone with no warning when the going got tough, so she assumed that'd happen to her].
I think the majority of the song is about the character's parent's mistakes and how this girl told herself growing up that she'd NEVER be like her parents, so she doesn't believe in love until this boy comes along.
Oh no, I never said that it was autobiographical at all! It sounds a lot like when she described how she wrote "You Belong With Me", how her friend was on the phone with his girlfriend and how the girl just kept yelling at him and Taylor felt really bad. She never had a problem with the cheer captain at her school or anything, but she wrote out a fantasy that played out in her head. Here, she took the concept of running away from love that she was feeling currently and probably went "what's a situation where there is...

Here, she took the concept of running away from love that she was feeling currently and probably went "what's a situation where there is an exception? how can I make a storyline with a conflict?" It didn't even have to happen to a friend or be autobiographical at all. I think this is the first time that she's actually a bit disconnected from the song, because her parents are still together, but she's thinking about a situation where parents have had a disconnected relationship.
Interesting take on sex not even being involved. That's certainly one way to think about it, but I guess I just thought it makes more sense if it was involved. One of the reasons that this song is significant is because of the fact that she's of growing up and writing about more mature concepts. In Fifteen, she wrote one line of how "Abigail gave everything she had to a boy who changed his mind/And we both cried" This line could go either way, but a lot of fans thought that she gave up her virginity because the line was so significant with the change in percussion and the way the boy seemed to want to go further in the music video. When you grow older, sex is a subject that pressures a lot of people and it's a topic that crosses a lot of young adult's minds. Because she's writing about more mature concepts and how sex intertwines with love at this stage, I thought it was definitely incorporated and appropriate here.
Another main part that I'd like to point out is that if the character is scared of being in a relationship, she got over it because she made a rebel out of herself already. She's not scared to be in a relationship, she's scared of STAYING in one. The line "A careless man's careful daughter" can be that she's just scared of a mismatched relationship that once didn't work out with her parents, but also that there's a reason that the relationship didn't work out in the first place. I went with the most common definition of a careless man, one who didn't take love seriously, a player.
But honestly, it could go any way that you want it to, one of just a failed relationship with mistakes that didn't bode well for both sides, one of a failed relationship with mistakes of mismatched love, and one that I was a bit surprised to see, a failed relationship because of careless man who physically hit a girl. (It was on a blog that I had read this on) Although I'm not sure if this interpretation rubs well with the song, it was interesting to see another fan's take. It could go many, many ways, and it's wonderful that Taylor's song can relate to so many people in so many ways.
great article thanx ^_^
great article thanx ^_^

i believe that
Where's my cellphone, and goodbye Cos it's all I've ever know
should actually be
"Brace myself for the goodbye cos it's all i've ever known"
yh thats right
yh thats right

This, along with "Fifteen", is probably one of the most mature things I've ever heard from Taylor. That's not to say I hate her other stuff, but I love that she's dropped the fairytale themes.
But the thing I like the most about this song is that it's a real testament to the relationship. Compared to her older, far shallower works, it really lays out the evidence (for lack of a better expression) for how wonderful their relationship is. I'm absolutely in love with it.

OMG TAYLOR you've done it again.Im hooked after the first time hearing this..Wow this girl is unstoppable and that makes me so so happy..I will love her and her music till the end of the earth shes AMAZING.x

Taylor Swift wrote this song from the perspective of two loving girlfriends each thinking about the relationships they have with their boyfriends, Stephen B. and Eric J.

love this song, i never liked country as well as any female singers, but this song is really something else. and it makes me think of how lucky i once was when i had the most amazing girl. i love her still. tiffany dimaggio <3

I was talking to my ex-boyfriend(we are still very close) the other night and I said that this song reminded me of him and my life. He said he agreed. How it matches is because I became more rebelious after I met him. He said he fell in love with a careless man's(personal story behind that) careul daughter. So still being close we made this our song even though we aren't dating. I ♥ this song

The video shows that this song is about a girl who's afraid to love because her parents were deivorced so she thinks that love never works. Then she finds a guy who doesn't leave her

This is the first single from American Country Pop singer-songwriter Taylor Swift's third studio album, Speak Now. Swift wrote all of the songs by herself, mainly while on her Fearless tour. She explained during an Ustream chat: "I wrote all the songs myself for this record. It didn't really happen on purpose. It just sort of happened that way. I'd get my best ideas at 3:00 AM in Arkansas, and didn't have a co-writer around and I'd just finish it. And that would happen again in New York; that would happen again in Boston; that would happen again in Nashville. The songs that made the cut for the albums are the ones that I wrote by myself."
This song is about Swift's "tendency to run from love." "It's been sort of a recent tendency, and I think it's because, for me, every really direct example of love that I've had in front of me has ended in goodbye and ended in break-ups and things like that," she explained. "So I think I've developed this pattern of running away when it comes time to fall in love and stay in a relationship. The song is sort of about finding the exception to that and finding someone who would make you believe in love and realize that it could work out, because I'm never ever going to go past hoping that love works out."
The song's music video was shot in Portland, Maine. Swift gushed regarding the clip's location: "Portland, Maine was the most beautiful place I have ever been. It was gorgeous. I absolutely fell in love with it. I had heard people talk about how they go to Maine and I was almost like, 'I wonder what Maine is like? I wonder why people love it so much?' It's because it is amazing and gorgeous! I went there and got to spend two to three days falling in love with it. When I am old and have silver hair, I want to go live in Maine and have a house and make necklaces or something and have a lot of cats. It's a whole fantasy for me. So at least I know where I'm going to end up."
Toby Hemingway, whose credits include the 2007 drama Feast of Love, co-stars in the video as Swift's on-screen groom. She explained to People magazine that the casting of the British actor was connected to her love for the number 13. "I saw 'Feast of Love' and just loved that movie and thought Toby was so great that I thought it would be perfect to put him in the video," Swift said. The country star added: "I was doing some more research and watched another movie he was in called The Covenant," she said. "I've got this crazy 13 lucky thing, and he walks on screen for the first time wearing a sweatshirt with a 13 on it! That was the deciding factor. It wasn't really up to me, it was about the number."
The song was released on August 4, 2010, ahead of the planned August 16th release, after a bootleg version appeared online. Swift's label said in a statement that the MP3 file of the song was "low-quality," and it wanted fans to hear the single in its proper form. Swift admitted to Rolling Stone that while she didn't expect it to be released prematurely, she eventually appreciated the overwhelmingly positive response to the track: "[My manager] said, 'I don't want you to panic.' And I said, 'The song leaked, didn't it?' " she said. "I turned on my phone and there were texts saying, 'Congratulations.' A leak is so out of my comfort zone, but it ended up good in the end. It made me so emotional that I started crying."
Taylor revealed to Rolling Stone that she penned the song out of nostalgia when thinking back to an unrequited relationship with a boy she once had a crush on. "I was reflecting back on a boy I liked at a certain time," she recalled. "The song is about what it would be like if I actually let my guard down."
The song's music video was directed by Roman White, the man behind Taylor's "Fifteen" and "You Belong With Me" clips. He recalled about the shoot: "We shot the video in early July in Maine, and it was insanely hot. The first day we shot at this private estate. They had a private beach and everything, which made shooting a lot easier, because when you go out in public and somebody spots Taylor Swift, I mean, it doesn't take 15 minutes and there's a huge crowd. The beach shot we shot was mostly her and Toby falling in love," he added. "It was more kind of walking hand in hand along the coastline, and then later on in the video, we kind of mimic that same beach. But it's Toby and older Taylor, and older Taylor has shorter hair. That's pretty much it."
Taylor told Ladies Home Journal her writing process: "I have an app on my iPhone that's a voice recorder. I'll be in the middle of a conversation and will literally walk away and record a bridge, a pre-chorus or half of a hook, then go right back to the conversation like nothing happened."
Chris Willman of Yahoo! Music asked Taylor how this song about a flirtation, which turns into a committed relationship (according to the video, marriage) fits in with the true confessions theme Speak Now. "It actually is a confession of some sort," she responded, "because this is a situation where a guy that I just barely knew put his arm around me by the water, and I saw the entire relationship flash before my eyes, almost like some weird science-fiction movie. After I wrote the song, things sort of fell apart, as things so often do. And I hadn't talked to him in a couple months. And the song came out, and that day I got an email from him. And I was like" - she claps her hands - "'Yes!' Because that one was sort of half-confession, and half-prediction or projection of what I saw. And the fact that it came across so clearly to that guy that he would email me meant that I had been direct enough."
Taylor explained on his website why she chose this as the lead single from Speak Now: "This song is the first single because it has this… there was this moment between Nathan and I, my producer, when I brought this song in and when we made this demo in one day in his basement and we just kinda looked at each other and we were like, 'This is it. This is the one.' All of the times that I've had 'The Moment' with songs of 'This is the one,' it's been a good call, so I'm hoping for the best on this one."
As on her other albums, Taylor capitalized seemingly random letters in the printed lyrics for each song. These spell out little messages, like the one revealed for this song — TOBY, which most likely alludes to Toby Hemingway. Music writers have been forced to speculate what Taylor actually means as the song was written well before she met the actor on the set of its video.
The visual won Video Of The Year at the 2011 CMT Music Awards. Swift accepted her award live via satellite from her concert in Milwaukee with a banjo draped around her neck. That way Kanye West couldn't get to her.
