INDECISION !!! when you dont know if whether give your love to someone and go ahead and built that relationship or just give up because you're scared or you dont want to jump into some relation but still you know that you feel something for that person... So you're trying to figure that out but, because of that indecision sometimes you have the thought of "oh no maybe i souldn't " so you kind of always go backwards on that relationship ... Thats why he says that he really wants that person to give everything but he's scared of having his "hopes up again"...Im kind of in that situation and when i heard the lyrics i was totally shocked because im living this exacly situation of "indecision"... @tiffanyayala99 I have always interpreted this the same way and this was kind of "our song" with some guy I personnaly was really in love with. He gave me the vinyl of that song and I really believed it was his way of telling me he loved me inspite of all this indecision. But well, now I think it didn't.

But it is the singer himself who can not love his partner. The hook pretty much suggests, that he wants to “go ahead”. But he (for some reason) can’t and that’s why he feels like only going backwards. “Going ahead” in this context means breaking up with his girlfriend as suggested by verse 1: “But I hear it inside my head all day” means he hears her calling for him all day, which obviously annoys him, because that’s the moment when he realizes that he is “just holding up to the hope(!) that … her(!) feelings dont show”. He hopes, she doesn’t have to much feelings for him, because he doesn’t love her. In verse 2 the singer assures us, he isn’t the “seed of all this indecision”, because he “decided long ago”. This suggests the singer experienced some kind of trauma quite some time ago and he still barley is able to have any feelings whatsoever. So he “decided” to not love anyone again because he fears the pain again. And when he’s singing about his hopes, that he got “up again, oh no, not again” he is referring to his hope he will eventually fall in love again. @tiffanyayala99 i really think that it's not the singer who's indecisive. it's someone he sings for. he knows he has feelings for her, but he isnt sure what the girl feels bcs she does not show it well. thus he cannot take the relationship (or whatever it is they have) to the next level.

This song is about knowing you have to move on. But the incertainty of whether that person still loves you or not, leaves you with a feeling of emptyness, indecision and hope. You bring your hopes up, but eventually your expectations shatter and you go back to the start. Feeling alone and sad once again, you search for any possible sign of love by that person, so that you can decieve yourself another time into thinking that he/she loves you. It's a vicious cycle.
This is exactly how I feel since my last girlfriend left me, after three years together. Hella good song from Tame Impala!
