Poltergeist Lyrics

What can I say
I think I had enough
I think you keep playing to play
Knowing that I feel sick
C’mon just say it
Just say you like to play
This game

Just to drive me wild
I let you pretend
But you know
Truth is that
I love you to death
Like you love this game

This time, there’s a common thread
And so I sit
And watch you play dumb I’d like to see
You play with the odds
On your plate instead
Come on just say it
Just say you like to keep this pace

Just to drive me wild
I let you pretend
But you know
Truth is that
I love you to death
Like you love this game

It keeps me hanging tight

What can I say
I think your head’s fucked
Go on drive me wild

This time
There’s a constant thread
This time
There’s a common thread
That keeps me hanging tight
And it tells me something’s right
What can I say
I fuckin' had enough
I think you just play what you play
Knowing that I feel sick
C’mon just say it
Say you like to play this game
'Cause it drives me wild

poltergeist, evil and malevolent spirit that plays with it's victim just for the sake of some sick enjoyment. could be a reference to mankind's handling and neglect of planet earth

@Auloo the lyrics to me appear to have a more sensual nature than natural :P

@Auloo I think he is comparing a girl to a poltergeist, in that she plays with her victim (him), just for the sake of sick enjoyment.

This song's about the dynamics of a drama filled relationship. You know the types, where one (or both) feel the need to constantly create drama in a relationship and for no other reason that they're addicted to the drama. This guy's obviously on the receiving end of someone that loves to play games just go play them. He knows she does it just to drive him wild and he gets sick of it. And he knows that she knows he loves her so much that she can keep doing this to him. The funny thing is, the guy despite being sick of it, comes to terms with it and not only learns to live with it, but has convinced himself that something must be right for this drama to keep happening and resolving.

My Interpretation

@morodrim I think you are close to my interpretation. Going on past Deftones lyrics, though I'd say this song doesn't deal with a "meaningful" relationship per se, but more just the sexual nature of it (fits in with a lot of their past themes too)

@morodrim I think the protagonist is believing that the relationship is meaningful. Morodrim says "....has convinced himself that something must be right for this drama to keep happening and resolving", and IMO that's a wonderfully worded explanation of the lyric "this time, there's a common thread".

Sounds like tease and denial. It's an S&M thing :)

@lowrider that would definitely fit the general theme of many of their songs. I definitely get a strong sexual impression from the song.

It's about being toyed with by a girl (either sexually or emotionally) to the point of sadism. He longs to be with her but she's reduced him to the level of a plaything to be used her own enjoyment. And it drives him crazy with desire.

This song has a deeper meaning than a relationship between two human beings. Think about it. Why do you think it's titled "Poltergeist"?

My Opinion

life is a big video game and god is the gamer/ #'s are for pussies. think outside the box you monkeys

@6mugen9 I think he's paralleling a person to poltergeist, and using the behavior of poltergeist to describe the woman's behavior- see the first comment.

My interpretation is that they are singing about a very toxic, narcissistic person. "Just to drive me wild I let you pretend But you know Truth is that I love you to death Like you love this game" A narcissistic person can be really charming and lovable, they know how to put on this charade to get you hooked in, but do something that to them jeopardizes that charade and you are in for a rough ride, it is a game they love to play, they toy with your emotions and make you feel crazy. "What can I say I think your head’s fucked Go on drive me wild" You start to realize how fucked in the head they really are, but you still end up playing their game without meaning to, any kind of reaction to.their bullshit drama vacuum gives them the ammunition for a new fight. The next verse reinforces the narcissistic person theory, once you become their target they will look for every little negative thing to pick apart, to make you look like the bad guy and play the victim to get the attention they crave.

In the last verse they see the common thread or what triggers the abuse and for once they feel right in the negative feelings they feel towards this narcissistic person, they finally have had enough and want this person to admit their sick mentality.

In summary, this song is great. The lyrics; as Deftones song lyrics often do; are so good at hitting a nerve or have deep meaning.
