American Lyrics
Get down, get your crystal method on
You were like dark tan driving round the city
Flirting with the girls like you're so pretty
Springsteen is the king don't you think
I was like, "hell yeah that guy can sing."
Just like a baby, spin me 'round like a child.
Your skin so golden brown
Be young, be dope be proud.
Like an American.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, like an American.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
LA, I don't even have to fake it now.
You're like so sick, everybody said it
You're way ahead of the trend ge-get it.
Elvis is the best, hell yes.
Honey put on that party dress
Just like a baby, spin me 'round like a child.
Your skin so golden brown
Be young, be dope be proud.
Like an American.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, like an American.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
I don't really want the rest, only you can take me there
I don't eve know what I'm saying but I'm praying for you
Just like a baby, spin me 'round like a child.
Your skin so golden brown
Be young, be dope be proud.
Like an American.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, like an American.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, like an American.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, like an American.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, like an American.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, like an American.

I believe this song is as simple as the lyrics are. She sees America and Americans as youthful, naive, and simple. She sees America for what it was in the days of Elvis, Springstein, and Tom Petty. She uses music and references to other artists music to explain what makes HER feel American. I love how honest she is through her music and how she reveals her insecurities without holding back..not so much in this song as in others but you can identify a few instances in this song.

To me it seems like this song is about the fast paced life of contemporary consumerist America. The child-like pleasure seeking, the societal pressure to be 'young, dope and proud'. The 'crystal method' most likely being a meth reference, talking about the addictive rush of such a hedonistic lifestyle.
Crystal Method is a band. I don't think it is a meth reference at all. Just saying.

To me this song is about America is portrayed. We Americans act like we're "Young, dope, and proud." We're very proud of where we come from and we feel like we're the shit. Explaining the LA lifestyle, the boy is flirting with the girls, tan skin, handsome, listens to good music, and parties. He's the exact definition of "California Boy". Just like others said, she's saying even if they're not in America he makes her feel like she's home and no one can make her feel that way but him.

This song is referring to the classical book by F.Scott Fitzgerald. If you read the book you will see it. It's the story but with lanas twist . Kind of like off to the races is about the book Lolita .
The song even had lines from the book.
The book is Tender Is The Night.

I don't know why this hasn't got any comments yet. It's by far my favorite song on the new EP.
I think it's definitely literal--like an American. The person she's singing about is the personification of what an American is, whether the person is, in fact, American or not. This could possibly be about her boyfriend--even though he's from the UK, he could make her feel like she's home, in America, because of the familiar traits he has that many Americans do.
Of course, alternatively, this could be her exclamation of her love for LA.
That's my two cents, even though everything I've said is most likely wrong. I'd really like to hear other theories or an actual, concrete meaning behind the song, so please speak up, everyone. :)

Should be something other than "Song Comparison," but anyway.
I think the lyric "honey, put on that party dress" alludes to Tom Petty's "Last Dance With Mary Jane." It seems very likely because she name-drops two other American artists (Springsteen and Elvis). She even sings it in a similar way to Tom Petty. I always found that interesting.

I love this song and this woman. She is brilliant.

I think this song is about how a guy she met portrays the American lifestyle. Tall, tan, beautiful, flirting with the girls. He takes her into his world and shows her what being American is all about. Being young, being dope, and being proud. Absolutely the best song on the album.
