Today I'm not myself
And you, you're someone else
And all these rules don't fit
And all that starts can quit

What a peculiar state, we're in
What a peculiar state, we're in

Let's play a game
Where all of the lives we lead
Could change
Let's play a game
Where nothing that we can see
The same

But we'll find other pieces to the puzzles
Slippin' out under the locks
I could show you how many moves to checkmate right now
We could take apart this life we're building
And pack it up inside a box
All that really matters is we're doing it right now
Right now

But we'll find other pieces to the puzzles
Slippin' out under the locks
I could show you how many moves to checkmate right now
We could take apart this life we're building
And pack it up inside a box
All that really matters is we're doing it right now
Right now

    My Interpretation

Au Revoir means goodbye in French. The title, coupled with the opening tone & lyrics, would suggest a break up.

However, while the relationship has definitely hit a breaking point, the song is really about creating a fresh start:

"Let's play a game Where all of the lives we lead, can change"

He's singing about their hopes & dreams, maybe what they had planned for themselves. What they're going through doesn't have to be the only way. He's willing to take all their baggage, whatever hurtful things that have been said, and just put it aside, "pack it up inside a box". All that really matters is that they do it ASAP.

On a side note, I absolutely love it when a piano track makes on the album.

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
