Breathe
Don't speak
It's leaving your body now
Slow heart
Set free
A circuit of consciousness
When you are truly yourself
You will
Succumb to a permanence
A light by day
A shadow resides by night

I (I) hear (hear) your (your) breathing

I (I) feel (feel) you (you) leaving

With understanding
You won't let it cast you down
A mind full of questions
A current to purify
Science and vision
Be near when I call your name
Or ask me a question

I (I) hear (hear) your (your) breathing

Breathe
Don't speak
It's leaving your body now

I (I) feel (feel) you (you) leaving

Heart set free
A circuit of consciousness

I (I) hear (hear) your (your) breathing

Light by day
A shadow resides by night

I (I) feel (feel) you (you) leaving

With understanding
You won't let it cast you down
A mind full of questions
A current to purify
Science and visions
Be near when I call your name
A mind full of questions
A current to purify
Science then visions
Be near when I call your name
Or ask me a question

This song is about realizing religion is bullshit and that science is the only truth.

I believe this song reflects the state of mind of scientists during the Age of Enlightenment. New experiments and technologies of the time allowed those pioneers to discover things for the first time that may have conflicted not only with their own beliefs, but the mainstream Christian dogma. These discoveries led to epiphanies in the scientists who began to realize religion did not fully explain the world. They were finally able to answer questions they pondered for years. I think this song essentially describes one of these scientist's epiphanies and his state of mind just before going public with the results of his experiment. "Be near when I call your name" could be the scientist's way of saying "trust me" or "stay by my side" to his companion (friend or lover perhaps). Many risked their lives pursuing their studies, not so much due to heresy (we're talking the 17th and 18th century, not the Middle Ages), but rather from being outcasted from society (and thus impoverished). What they feel "leaving their body" could be the burden of religion that has held them back. They have to relax and just breath because the burden was so heavy - it is a big change for them. "Science and visions" are just that, "science" as opposed to religion; and "visions" as opposed to faith; "visions" being what a person actually sees/witnesses (not hallucinations).

Really cool song. It has a dark vibe and cryptic lyrics. I love Chvrches. I discovered them late (only a few months ago). I got all their albums now and have been listening a lot. I love Lauren Mayberry's voice. Brilliant singing.

I think this song could describe the "quantum entanglement" of reality - e.g. the interplay between light/dark or science/visions as mentioned in the lyrics. Can't really define one without the other. For example, with science, there is a certain mysticism underlying the idea that things CAN be explained in any repeatable way - a mystery to be solved, a "reality" to describe. In this case I liken "a current to purify" to whatever that force is that keeps the two entangled objects in relationship to (and/or fighting with) each other.

Taking refuge from mental illness in the promise of scientific advancement.
