So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.

Songs carry so many individual meanings to so many different people. <br /> You can hear a song on the radio and it makes you feel so uplifted because it reminds you of a good time in your life, or the message in the song gives you hope. When my father passed away there was a song that we always used to dance to together and when I hear it on the radio it makes me feel happy because it reminds me of the good times I had with my father. And to always appreciate the happy memories and not the sad ones. <br /> Your story is amazing.

This song is about being there for each other, I believe. where he starts with Hey Brother or Hey Sister, he is trying to tell or teach his brothers and sisters (which I do think can be either family or other loved ones) something about their lives: brother, there is so much left to do in life, even what you did can feel as new; and sister, know when you need to be serious. And asking if they are still able to trust their love, which makes me think they already have had a hard time. For any other hard times coming up for his brothers and sisters, he is going to be there for them no matter what, obviously. All the other pieces of lyric are pretty much about that. Also, I think the bros and sisters he is talking to are younger or can really need some help, because they may be vulnarable in some way. that is because of those questions in the chorus like What if I lose it all?

"Do you still believe in one another" Meaning he is trying to prove a point between the two that do you still believe we will be there for on another. "Do you still believe in love?" family love for one another. "What if I'm far from home? Oh brother, I will hear you call!" meaning that he will know what is wrong, and he will realize it and come home. "What if I lose it all? Oh sister, I will help you hang on!" If death is the last chance I will be by your side standing strong keeping you from the wrong.

Catev my life was like that too and my brother is always there for me and helping me he knows just what to say. I heard him listening to this song I looked it up and I knew he was thinking of me! There is always people like us around us and those of us Lucky enough to have siblings can really help.
I was all alone that time I felt so lost I didnt know who i was anymore and this guy from my school just sent it to me out of now where he treats me like his little sister and he thought about me all the time and every time i feel so lonely i listen to this song and think of him and i know he thinks about me all the time he even told me that he needs me and that i need to be strong for him.

Indeed they have. The singer is the same as in the "Man of constant sorrow" and the Cohens' "O brother where art thou" is a direct inspiration for the music and lyrics.
O brother wher art thou is rooted in Odyssey, although set in 1930s, but the themes of brotherly love are universal and have not changed much form the philadelphia of the times in which the original Odyssey was written.
My interpretation of this song brings me to our military men and women. Often they are looked at as brothers and sisters in arms, and with many coming home from Iraq or Afghanistan wounded or dealing with their own inner deamons whether it be from what they saw or did, this song basically says call me no matter what I will be there for you and help you get through anything.
@tsouth1212 I think the video for this song back you up as there is a lot of military imagery. It starts out with what seems like two brothers doing brother things (riding bikes, teasing one another, camping in the back yard) while on televisions show that a war is going on. Then the younger brother opens a box and pulls out pictures of himself and an older man and some medals. Then the previous scenes change and the older brother is now this man (I get the impression that the older man is the boy's father and the earlier scenes were showing that the father-son relationship more of a friendship than parent-child). And then the boy is in a military graveyard and they are burying the man with military honors. And the son is being presented the flag that draped his father's casket.

I imagine Avicii going to the studio and saying to his manager/agent/producer/whatever "Hey (managers name), I really have a cool beat here, come listen. Dude, yes. Avicii is a clown. Love Dan Tyminski though. The lyrics are great, although I'm sure Avicii had literally nothing to do with them. Tyminski was greatly influenced by his brother to start playing music, and this song has him written all over it. Avicii just played like 10 notes on a synthesizer and added a beat to it. The parts Avicii did are the worst part of the song.
