So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.

Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
He is cheating on his wife/spouse with her, and she wants him all to herself. She is jealous and cunning. "I'll never tell, tell on myself but I hope she smells my perfume," She won't say anything, but is hoping that the perfume will be her subtle way of telling the secret about their affair. Love this song
She's insecure about herself. So she thinks a lover is cheating on her when in reality he's not but she sets up all the scenarios in her mind and plays them over and over and tells herself they're real.
This is about her being paranoid in her relationship because her boyfriend is communicating with his ex. She wants to "mark her territory" to show that's he's taken. So she sprays perfume all over the place and all

Trying to think outside of the box here and steering away from the image of a poor and desperate girl, I think this song is more about the woman's feelings of being replaced by somebody she considers a downgrade from who she is. She also wants to keep cool about it by masking her threats toward the replacement (and not making it public) in hopes of keeping her place (ex: a queen vs. a mistress, or girlfriend vs. rebound) instead of downgrading herself (ex: girl fight, girl drama, or anything that turns a man off).
For me I feel as though you're getting two perspectives here... It sounds like the first half of the song is sung by the feelings of the ex girlfriend who's still in love with him...(current girlfriend , ex girlfriend trying to be cool) And the other half is by his current girlfriend who's wondering about what's going on between them two..(current girlfriend but now I'm your girlfriend )
I interpret this as the singer being the exgirlfriend of a man in a relationship and her fear that he is still in love with his current girlfriend. She will not tell the girlfriend because then the man will be upset and she will be out of the picture, but she hopes the girlfriend finds out so she can have him to herself.
How ironic Britney singing about her being the mistress in an affair, and then she breaks up with David because of alleged 'cheating' rumours...
