The Gospel of John Hurt

His love for someone is bursting out of his chest, like John Hurt the iconic Alien scene.

I love this song, and for too long I didn't understood the meaning this song. So I started to read it again and again, and when I searched the Web for the meaning of "John Hurt" it finally hit me that this is a song simply about the movie Alien.

No space - the crew just landed on a new planet and the no longer in space

L-shaped - the egg cracked in a L shape and you can see this on the movie poster pictures

Tetris Tile seeking - the alien trys to find the best match, they use the Tetris game as a metaphor

Somewhere Oh somewhere To fit in Alien - the alien need somewhere to fit in

(Come on) Oh, coming out of the woodwork Chest bursts like John Hurt Coming out of the woods - in the chorus the probably talking about the alien coming out. after been connected to Kane face, the alien disappeared. Few minutes later the alien bursts from Kane (played by John Hurt) chest and start killing the people.

Ak Twenty 4-7 Civilian - this I didn't understood very mutch, but I assume that there is the fight against the alien. The talk about weapons (AK-47) and civilians and it's seem in place if you look on the story.

Jeremiah Looking down And you know where you're looking on down Do you know where you go You're headed on the strings For the E-X-T-I-N-C-T - now this is interesting, Jeremiah is a prophet in the Bible. In his story he saw a vision and in it there where no man or animals alive, only destroyed citys and things that look like birds flying and leaving the earth. The speculation is that he saw a vision of alien invasion. This directly connects to the story of the movie and they always use things that looke like they have no connection to the song, but when you look you understand the connection.

I know this sounds very strange, but this is my interpretation of the song, hope you'll like it. Sorry fore the poor language, English is not my native language.

All this time I thought it was "get me out of the bourgeois"

I still don't know exactly what this means/what the references are? However, this is one cool sounding song... one of my favorites from alt-j for sure.

Not sure about the verses, but "ak 20 47 Civillian" is a clever play on words, referencing the gun Ak-47, 20 civilians, and 24-7, all the time. I also think that the chorus "Oh, coming out of the woodwork, chest burst like John Hurt, coming out of the wood", when taken with the earlier line, is talking about some kind of shooting. They, maybe the 20 civilians, are coming out of the woodwork and shooting, causing Jeremiah's (?) chest to burst like John Hurt's in Alien.
