Sinking Man Lyrics

Cold, dark sea, wrapping its arms around me
Pulling me down to the deep, all eyes on me
I pushed you away, although I wished you could stay
So many words left unsaid but I'm all out of breath

So go, go, go, get out of here
Go away, get out of here
Go, go, get out of here
Go away, get out of here

Go, go, get out of here
Go away, get out of here
Go, go, get out of here, go away

Cold, dark sea, your waves are rocking me
I close my eyes and fall asleep, all eyes on me
Your eyes on me

To me this song is about a girl who is suffering from depression, which is the the metaphor for the 'cold, dark sea' and someone is trying to help them but they're are pushing them away, even though she really wants them to stay and help. In the end she falls asleep, maybe into a deeper state of depression, and she can feel everyone watching her, especially those of the person who was trying to help her.

My Interpretation

I agree to a certain level... To me, this definitely is about a person (guy or girl) who's trying to push people away, but in the end doesn't succeed. The person who wants to be there for her, still is. He/she falls asleep knowing that and (hopefully) feels comforted by it. It's far from easy falling asleep with a weight on your shoulders.

Since this song is for The Walking Dead, I see it as from the viewpoint of Rick Grimes, the protagonist (I'll try and avoid spoilers).

Cold, dark sea Wrapping its arms around me, Pulling me down to the deep. All eyes on me.

Rick goes through a lot of stress, and due to his circumstances, he begins to sink into a depression, which 'wraps' around him. Everybody is affected by this, thus they all turn to him since seeing their leader in trouble puts them in a worse position.

I pushed you away Although I wished you could stay. So many words left unsaid, But I'm all out of breathe.

With all the trauma he has gone through, he pushes away thoughts of his wife, because it's too hard to think about, but he is also hurt that he can't be with her at that moment since there is so much that he needs to talk to her about. He loves her deeply, and when she isn't near him, he is left in a volatile state.

So, go, go, go, Get out of here. Go away, Get out of here.

A continuation of what was said in the last line, he is pushing her, and possibly other people away, because he's going to implode emotionally. He's not sure how much longer he will last, and he doesn't want anybody nearby when his self-destruction happens.

Now, for my interpretation when I don't relate it to the show: It's about a man or woman (I personally see it as a man) who is either abusing a substance or has a deep seated problem within themselves that is becoming destructive. This destructive behavior is destroying themselves and everything around them (like an alcoholic in a drunken rage), and they realize that; they realize how despicable they have become. The person is falling deeper into trouble, and wants help, but the hurt is too deep and they don't want to pull someone else in into their trouble, let alone destroy their relationship. The man knows that he is going to implode soon; despite his deep need for another person, he pushes them away, as if saving the other person from a hand grenade about to explode. He's going to take a long fall, and he doesn't want anyone around to see it happen, so he pushes them all away; he's lost enough dignity, he wants them gone before he loses anymore. And so he embraces the sea, disappearing before anyone can say goodbye.

It's about a man who fell in love with a girl who was part of some mafia, and the mafia drowned him and he regrets not doing anything.

I think this song was written in the perspective of a person who is slowly dying in front of their loved one in the show The Walking Dead. Someone from the group gets bit during a scuffle with walkers and they must leave the person to die. This 'cold, dark sea' is death and it's enveloping the person and taking he/she down. Everyone is looking at the dying person knowing that they are going to turn into a zombie. This person is feeling regret for becoming distant to their loved one and wants them to stay to say their last goodbyes but is running out of breath/time. The person tells every to leave and save themselves At the end, the 'cold, dark see' finally claims its victim 'I close my eyes and fall asleep'. All eyes on me, Your eyes on me. Appeals first to the group, then to the victims' loved one.

He left his wife and despite being with other women and thinking he doesn’t love her anymore, he does but won’t admit to anyone and he is dying inside he has left her alone to be by herself and has alienated her and done terrible things to her but he is the one who feels like he is dying inside just as much as her. he is ignorant, now he has sinking into the deep dark sea rather than admit anything.
