Wish I may, wish I might
Find my one true love tonight
Do you think that he could be you?

If I pray really tight
Get into a fake bar fight
While I'm walking down the avenue
If I lay really quiet
I know that what I do isn't right
I can't stop what I love to do
So I murder love in the night
Watching them fall one by one, they fight
Did you think you'll love me too?

Baby, I'm a sociopath
Sweet serial killer
On the warpath
'Cause I love you just a little too much
I love you just a little too much
You can see me drinking Cherry Cola
Sweet serial killer
I left a love note
Said you know I love the thrill of the rush
You know I love the thrill of the rush

(You send me right to heaven)
Sweet serial killer (I guess I'll see him over)
Do it for the thrill of the rush
Love you just a little too much, much
(You send me right to heaven)
Sweet serial killer
(I guess I'll see him over)
I love you just a little too much
Love you just a little too much, much

My black fire's burning bright
Maybe I'll go out tonight
We can paint the town in blue
I'm so hot, I ignite
Dancing in the dark and I shine
Like a light I'm luring you
Sneak up on you really quiet
Whisper, "Am I what your heart desires?"
I can be your ingenue
Keep you safe and inspired
Baby, let your fantasies unwind
We can do what you want to do

Baby, I'm a sociopath
Sweet serial killer
On the warpath
'Cause I love you just a little too much
I love you just a little too much
You can see me drinking Cherry Cola
Sweet serial killer
I left a love note
Said you know I love the thrill of the rush
You know I love the thrill of the rush

(You send me right to heaven)
Sweet serial killer
(I guess I'll see him over)
Do it for the thrill of the rush
Love you just a little too much, much
(You send me right to heaven)
Sweet serial killer
(I guess I'll see him over)
I love you just a little too much
Love you just a little too much, much

Just have fun
(Wanna play you like a Gameboy)
I don't want one
(What's the thrill of the same toy?)
La-la, la-la, la, la-la, la-la, lie down, down

Just have fun
(I wanna play you like a Gameboy)
I don't want one
(What's the thrill of the same toy?)
La-la, la-la, la, la-la, la-la, lie down, down

Oh

You can see me drinking Cherry Cola
Sweet serial killer
I left a love note
Said you know I love the thrill of the rush
You know I love the thrill of the rush

(You send me right to heaven)
Sweet serial killer
(I guess I'll see him over)
Do it for the thrill of the rush
Love you just a little too much, much
(You send me right to heaven)
Sweet serial killer
(I guess I'll see him over)
I love you just a little too much
Love you just a little too much, much

    My Interpretation

I think it's pretty clear that she's comparing her sexual conquests to serial killings. As a serial killer would get off on murdering someone, she's getting the same kind of satisfaction over these encounters with men. Pretty good song.

    My Interpretation

I get the feeling that this song is about Lana loving the thrill of the beginning of relationships (I left a love note, said you know I love the thrill of the rush You know I love the thrill of the rush) but eventually she gets bored and wants a differant guy. (Just have fun, wanna play you like a gameboy, I don't want one, lost the thrill of the same toy) She knows that it's terrible and all she's doing is hurting people hense the whole "Serial killer" thing. (Baby I'm a sociopath, sweet serial killer). That's just my interpretation. :)

    General Comment

I agree with the other comments about it being metaphorical, but it could also mean that she literally is going around having fun with men and then killing them.

    My Interpretation

One way to look at this song is for it to be about someone who takes advantage of people and makes them think she's in love with them for fun. She does this to multiple people, and it results in very interesting events.

The beginning might be her convincing the person that she is in love with them, trying to gain their trust. (Wish I may, wish I might, find my one true love tonight. Do you think that he could be you?)

The next part, (If I lay really quiet, I know that what I do isn't right, I can't stop what I love to do.) means that when she is alone, she knows that what she does isn't moral and is wrong, but she can't bring herself to stop because she finds it so fun and amusing.

(So I murder love in the night, watching them fall one by one they fight, do you think you'll love me too, ooh, ooh?) The multiple lovers find out about one another, but using different complex methods, she makes each one think its not her fault. They fight, and so she "murders love in the night", which could refer to either their hearts, or some died in the fight, when they fell.

(My black fire's burning bright, maybe I'll go out tonight. We can paint the town in blue. I'm so hot, I ignite, dancing in the dark and I shine. Like a light I'm luring you.) Her need to manipulate someone is very strong, so her "black fire" is burning bright. She thinks she will go out tonight and find someone new to quench her need. She is describing herself dancing, and how she is attracting a new man.

(Sneak up on you, really quiet, whisper "Am I what your heart desires?" I could be your ingenue. Keep you safe and inspired, baby, let your fantasies unwind. We can do what you want to do, ooh, ooh.) She's making him fall in love with her by letting him do what he wants to do with her so he thinks she's the perfect woman.

(Just have fun), wanna play you like a game boy. (Don't want one), what's, the thrill of the same toy? La la, la la la, la la, la la lie down, down.) Clearly, she wants to manipulate him. She gets a new man every so often because her "toy" looses it's thrill after a while.

(Baby, I'm a sociopath, sweet serial killer. On the warpath, 'cause I love you just a little too much. I love you just a little too much.) She is a sociopath, because sociopaths manipulate other's feelings without caring, and she is a serial killer because she kills their hearts, or they die in fights with other men over her.

(You can see me drinking cherry cola, sweet serial killer. I left a love note, said you know I love the thrill of the rush.) The note could be figurative or literal, about how much she loves the thrill of the lies and challenging herself to lie to the men. She loves the rush as they discover some of the lies and just the general adrenaline from the whole thing.

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
