Fire and the Flood Lyrics

I was only walking through your neighborhood
Saw your light on, honey; in the cold I stood
Anywhere I go, there you are
Anywhere I go, there you are

I was getting used to waking up with you
I was getting used to waking up here
Anywhere I go, there you are
Anywhere I go, there you are

There you are, there you are

You're the fire and the flood
And I always feel you in my blood
Everything is fine when your head's resting next to mine, next to mine
You're the fire and the flood

Since we met, I feel a lightness in my step
You're miles away, but I still feel you
Anywhere I go, there you are (anywhere)
Anywhere I go, there you are

Late at night, when you can't fall asleep
I'll be lying right beside you, counting sheep
Anywhere I go, there you are (anywhere)
Anywhere I go, there you are

There you are, there you are

You're the fire and the flood
And I always feel you in my blood
Everything is fine when your head's resting next to mine, next to mine
You're the fire and the flood

"Now, listen here," she said
"Boy, when you know, you'll know"
And I know

You're the fire and the flood
And I always feel you in my blood
Everything is fine when your head's resting next to mine, next to mine
You're the fire and the flood

i feel like there could be two interpretations.. the first could be that a loved one moved far away and the song is saying no matter how far away the person is he'll always love them and "be with" them, and the second interpretation could be that a loved one passed away and they're telling them that even though they're "miles away" (in heaven) they still feel their presence, and they will always be there with them wherever they are. either way i love this song and always jam to it in my car when it plays on the radio!

The song is talking about regardless of not being in relationships. It saying that spending so much time with only one special friend, when you got to the point and realize that special friend made a big impact into your life. Memories.

Such a passionate song! I think it's about being with the one person who ignites you, who gets you worked up whether it's in an angry or excited way and at the same time they're the flood that relaxes you and puts you at ease. Like they're the cause of the spark and the cause of the relief, good and bad. I feel like this is about a relationship or this could be about two who both know they like each other but neither will come out and say it. This is the testament, this is screaming from the mountain, this is sung from the heart and soul <3

When I first heard this song it felt more like an ode to a loved one, no matter how close or how far away, that makes them feel safe during periods of anxiety, depression or another mental illness. They are the fire that keeps them burning with passion for life, for everything in the flood of emotions and thoughts.

My Interpretation

The lyrics "Now listen here she said; Boy when you know you’ll know; And I know" is what stood out to me. I thought it was the best times in juxtaposition to their true feelings and end of their relationship - how close they were (He's there when she can't fall asleep, etc) vs. now when he feel that he can't escape the thought of her now that they are over.

Either she knows he's the one for her and he doesn't feel it or she's met someone where she feels it and is letting him go (when he thought the girl in front of him was his everything)

Maybe I'm wrong and just projecting my past relationships to the lyrics Shrug Love the song.

On second thought and reading the rest of the interpretations, I think it's a combo. Maybe she knows that he's the one but she has some mental health issues and so to him, it's the ups and downs, the flames and floods, that he deals with because he loves her?
