All alone she was living
In a world without an end or beginning
Baby girl was living life for the feeling
But I don't mind, I don't mind, oh
And all the wrongs she committed
She was numb and she was so co-dependent
She was young and all she had was the city
But I don't mind, I don't mind

And I know (know) that she's capable of anything, it's riveting
But when (when) you wake up she's always gone, gone, gone, oh

In the night she hears him calling
In the night she's dancing to relieve the pain
She'll never walk away (I don't think you understand)
In the night when she comes crawling
Dollar bills and tears keep falling down her face
She'll never walk away (I don't think you understand)

He sang a song when he did it
He was cold and he was so unforgiving
Now she dances to the song on the minute
Yeah, all the time (all the time), all the time (all the time), oh
It make her weak when she hear it
And it got her on her knees like religion
She was young and she was forced to be a woman
Yeah, all the time (all the time), all the time (all the time)

And I know (know) that she's capable of anything, it's riveting
But when (when) you wake up she's always gone, gone, gone, oh

In the night she hears him calling
In the night she's dancing to relieve the pain
She'll never walk away (I don't think you understand)
In the night when she comes crawling (yeah)
Dollar bills and tears keep falling down her face (falling down her face)
She'll never walk away (I don't think you understand, oh babe)

I don't think you understand (woah, woah)
I don't think you understand (oh)
(I don't think, I don't think) no, no, no (I don't think, I don't think)
I don't think you understand (oh)

In the night she hears him calling (yeah)
In the night she's dancing to relieve the pain (to relieve the pain)
She'll never walk away (no, no, no, I don't think you understand, hey)
In the night when she comes crawling (hoo)
Dollar bills and tears keep falling down her face (falling down her face)
She'll never walk away
I don't think you understand

This song is really sad. He speaks about how she was trained to do this as a child, most likely by a man - a father or step-father. And now she is addicted to it because it is all she knows and when she hears the music she feels compelled to dance as if she had no choice. She also can't have committed relationships and/or a relationship with intimacy because she was only taught to "work" and treat her body as an object to make money. She was never shown love or learned to love herself and thus why she is codependent and numb to all her feelings and needs. But the singer sees something special in her and doesn't mind. He knows she could do anything and wants to encourage her to see that in herself but at the present he's having trouble getting through to her due to her lack of ability to share true intimacy with another and leaving in the morning.

I read that his girlfriend's mother has been hitting on him since her parents got divorced, so it's probably about Bella's parents' divorce and the aftermath of it.

    My Interpretation

More or less, she's a porn star of sorts. Or a stripper. Someone in the adult entertainment business, who's been abused by her either husband, father or boyfriend, and is suffering all-around from her work, her relationships and drug addiction.

No, she isn't a stripper or a porn star. This song is actually about Marylin Monroe and the sexual abuse she endured as a child.

It's about a woman who was abused either as a child or by a boyfriend/husband. She uses drugs to numb the pain and her memories and she dances at a club for money to support her habit and as a way to also numb the pain. She feels detached and self hatred so her body becomes both a weapon and a tool for her.

So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new. This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus. Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness". The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1. All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy. And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns) There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.

Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

Gadjits, The
He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
