Well, in my opinion this song is about being a young & maybe a little naive &/or introverted girl and finding yourself loving a man who is at first very charming, carefree & outgoing, and seems at first to be without limits, as in
"There was a time
you opened up every doorway
you didn't mind if everything
wasn't your way"
then that man starts to gradually become more introverted & shows their more possessive/obsessive side to you as the relationship progresses, even while they keep up the appearance of being carefree & outgoing to everyone else,
"Don't pull away
that goes against what you told me
I look in your eyes
I realize what you've sold me
is love in a vacuum"
so you confront them about the way they're acting and of course they deny it,
"I think you've changed
but you insist that
that's not true"
quite possibly they are an addict of some sort, my guess would be cocaine, &/or showing very obsessive behavior towards you (early on in the video for this song we see the man hanging a picture up, it is a very large portrait of Aimee & it is prominently displayed in his/their apartment for the duration of the song), thus their "love in a vacuum",
"You look so strange, so distant
that you're hardly you
Now I can see
how you have been acting different
You say it's me
but I know
that it isn't
it's love in a vacuum"
but still you are in love with them and don't want to leave them and you know that they are truly in love with you and they don't want you to leave them either, maybe they are convinced you can save them from themself, maybe they are so broken that the possibility of an overdose &/or suicide attempt is very real and you want to get through to them that their behavior not only dangerous but it is also just pissing you off and if they don't wise up they run the risk of loosing you, as in the lines
"You will be lonely
if you leave me alone", so you want to save them but can't get through to them due to the addiction &/or emotional problems they have,
"Love in a vacuum
and that's not enough
love in a vacuum
You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
You will be lonely
if you leave me alone
You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
it's just not enough"
you want them to understand that the love they are giving you is not enough when it is filtered through the vacuum of their drug addiction &/or emotional impairment,
"You will be lonely
you'll be the only one who feels this way
it's just not enough
and just wait
you will be lonely
Love in a vacuum
Love in a vacuum
and that's not enough
Love in a vacuum".
'Love In A Vacuum' for me is a hauntingly truthful acute argument on the loneliness of obsession and almost inevitable loss of love that follows people who are broken in some way or another; the obsessives, the coke heads, the drunks, addicts or the just-plain-old emotionally broken; a razor sharp, lyrically driven, deceptively poppy, yet ultimately-depressing-in-the-best-way song.
Quintessential Aimee Mann.
One, two, Melatonin is coming for you
Three, four, baby, won't you lock the door?
Five, six, I'm done with it
Seven, eight, it's getting late, so close your eyes, sleep the days
Hush, little baby, drink your spoiled milk
I'm fucking crazy, need my prescription filled
Do you like my cookies They're made just for you
A little bit of sugar, but lots of poison, too
Ashes, ashes, time to go down
Ooh, honey do you want me now?
Can't take it anymore, need to put you to bed
Sing you a lullaby where you die at the end
Nine, ten, never want to see you again
Eleven, twelve, I pull off black so well
Shit behind the curtain that I'm sick of sugarcoatin'
Next time you're alone, think fast when you grab the phone
Ashes, ashes, time to go down
Ooh, honey do you want me now?
Can't take it anymore, need to put you to bed
Sing you a lullaby where you die at the end
Ashes, ashes, time to go down
Ooh, honey do you want me now?
Can't take it anymore, need to put you to bed
Sing you a lullaby where you die at the end
Three, four, baby, won't you lock the door?
Five, six, I'm done with it
Seven, eight, it's getting late, so close your eyes, sleep the days
Hush, little baby, drink your spoiled milk

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

God, there's SO many ways to interpret these lyrics. It's BRILLIANT. I thought I would share at least one of them here, but this one is a huge reach lol
"1, 2, melatonin is coming for you"
Children as young as 6 months old can take melatonin, which is an all natural supplement that some people use as a sleep aid. You can actually crush it up and put it on / in food or drinks. Or melatonin could symbolize a much stronger drug used to put the toddler to sleep. This could be because the parents are neglectful.
"3, 4, baby, won't you lock the door?"
This could refer to sexual abuse, this could be about a parent locking the door while he or she does drugs, the writer could be "locking" themselves away to avoid their families arguing or abuse, etc. the list goes on.
"Hush, little baby, drink your spoiled milk I'm fucking crazy, need my prescription filled Do you like my cookies? They're made just for you A little bit of sugar, but lots of poison, too"
Perhaps the mother is drugging the child with medication, whether she is prescribed it or not. Her saying "Do you like my cookies? they're made just for you" could mean the pills are her 'cookies' (to fit with the childish theme) and she got them just for the child. Or the milk symbolizes the mother being loving and caring temporarily, and the milk being spoiled is the mothers drug use over time and how she's become rotten; another side of her that is abusive, neglectful, etc.
9, 10, never want to see you again 11, 12, I pull off black so well
The child is growing up and by this age, she's realized that the things her mother does or has done are inexcusable, unforgivable. She'd like to disown this person. 'Pulling off black' could either be the child's physical bruises, which are typically referred to as black and blue. or it could represent the childs mental state, depression, aftermath, and long term effects of neglect and abuse. Pulling off black could also be the child realizing that she's in a dark place and is forced to accept it.
She can't take it anymore, she doesn't want to sugarcoat it anymore, she wants to sleep with this someone. This someone doesn't want to sleep with her, but not for any reason other then what it changes in their relationship. She is going to put them to bed, she is fucking crazy, and they are going to die at the end. She doesn't care if it ruins their friendship, she doesn't care if she never sees them again, to her, it's worth it.
In French, the words "La petite mort" literally mean "the little death", but is used as a way to describe an orgasm during sex. To me, this is the same as she is going to "Sing you a lullaby where you die at the end."
This song is simply about Crybaby poisoning the Big Bad Wolf, who had previously kidnapped Crybaby in Tag, You're It.
"1, 2, Melatonin's coming for you" Crybaby's previous name was supposed to be Melatonin. This could also simply suggest the actual vitamin.
"11, 12, I pull off black so well" could be a reference to people wearing black at funerals.
This could be about a toxic relationship, but that would be a second meaning, very different as to what the music video and lyrics suggest.
wow, i don't understand why my comment looks so messed up. :( completely ruined my hard work! lol
I posted this on Reddit: "Now whenever I listen to it,I like to think it's from the perspective of someone who is either too insecure or scared of hurting the other person in the relationship,so they do their best to make that person hate them so that they'll leave on their own instead of having to explain their fears. In order to do that, the one who 'poisons' the other tries to think of them as someone they hate and /want/ gone so that it won't hurt so much when they break up."
The first verse describes the moment right as Cry Baby and her boyfriend meet together, and she's preparing to make him want to leave her,"1,2,melatonin is coming for you." The spoiled milk and cookies in the second verse represent the things she says,or the impressions she puts in his mind (that she's crazy). Although it's a terrible thing she wants to do,she's still doing it out of love so that she won't hurt him down the road,"A little bit of sugar, but lots of poison too."
"Ooh,honey,do you want me now?" from the third verse was the line that inspired this interpretation, for obvious reasons. When she says she wants to "put him to bed" where he "dies at the end",she actually wants to erase him from her mind so that she'll forget about him sooner and not have to grieve as long over the destroyed relationship, which is further implied from the first line in the fourth verse,"9,10,never wanna see you again."
She knows she "pulls off black so well" because this is a common occurrence for her. The shit behind the curtain that she doesn't want to sugarcoat anymore is her true nature,or what she believes is her true nature, which is what she wants to spare him from. By doing this so dramatically, she hopes he'll second-guess calling her to try to make things work if he possibly wants to when he's alone to himself thinking about all of this.
Just my take on it,though, because I definitely can't relate to murdering my [nonexistent] kidnapper.
This song comes right after Tag, You're It on the Cry Baby album. The Cry Baby album is supposed to be a story about a character named Cry Baby. In Tag, You're It Cry Baby gets kidnapped by the Bad Wolf Ice Cream Man, and so in Milk and Cookies she poisons the wolf with milk and cookies and escapes. The line "Ashes, Ashes" refers to killing someone because people are often burnt when they die. It will all make a lot more sense if you watch the Tag, You're It/Milk and Cookies double feature music video.
