I met you in the dark, you lit me up
You made me feel as though I was enough
We danced the night away, we drank too much
I held your hair back when
You were throwing up

Then you smiled over your shoulder
For a minute, I was stone-cold sober
I pulled you closer to my chest
And you asked me to stay over
I said, "I already told ya
I think that you should get some rest"

I knew I loved you then
But you'd never know
'Cause I played it cool when I was scared of letting go
I know I needed you
But I never showed
But I wanna stay with you until we're grey and old
Just say you won't let go
Just say you won't let go

I'll wake you up with some breakfast in bed
I'll bring you coffee with a kiss on your head
And I'll take the kids to school
Wave them goodbye
And I'll thank my lucky stars for that night

When you looked over your shoulder
For a minute, I forget that I'm older
I wanna dance with you right now
Oh, and you look as beautiful as ever
And I swear that everyday you'll get better
You make me feel this way somehow

I'm so in love with you
And I hope you know
Darling, your love is more than worth its weight in gold
We've come so far, my dear
Look how we've grown
And I wanna stay with you until we're grey and old
Just say you won't let go
Just say you won't let go

I wanna live with you
Even when we're ghosts
'Cause you were always there for me when I needed you most

I'm gonna love you 'til
My lungs give out
I promise 'til death we part like in our vows
So I wrote this song for you, now everybody knows
That it's just you and me 'til we're grey and old
Just say you won't let go
Just say you won't let go

Just say you won't let go
Oh, just say you won't let go

Truly an amazing song about finally finding the one and being madly in love with them and praying they won't ever leave.

    Question

I like this, but I guess even after reading the other comments I still have a question. I get that his love is impossibly deep for her, but after the journey the song takes you on, he's still pleading that she won't "let" go. Is this simply his insecurity?

I have a different interpretation of this song, one I know isn't backed by his own descriptions.

She becomes terminally ill rather young, and he's wrestling with her impending passing.

This is why she's vomiting. This is why she doesn't get out of bed (when he takes the kids to school and brings her breakfast in bed. This is why he WANTS to dance with her right now (doesn't say they actually DO). This why there is so much talk about death, mortality, ghosts.

And him pleading "Say You Won't Let Go" is about her not leaving him earlier than she should, due to her illness.

Don't mean to be morbid - but it's a different take that maybe gives the song an alternate feel.

    My Interpretation

I believed initially that the song was about a man who loved a woman, yet did not want her to love him back, believing that he was not enough for her. He loved her so much that when she asked him to stay over, he told her to get some rest. This implies he did not sleep with her, though he may have stuck around her house to ensure she was safe or something.

And yet some time in the future ('for a minute I forget that I'm older') he still ended up with her, the woman who he loves so much until death.

I found this similar to a backstory for a character in some books I'm creating and hoping to get published someday. It's very similar - a man who loves a woman so much that he believes he doesn't deserve her company, yet most likely ends up with her anyway. That's part of what brought about my interpretation, how similar I realised the lyrics were to my character's point of view.

You can interpret some bits as he's her friend and he secretly loves her and she doesn't know.
