The 1 Lyrics
Been saying 'yes' instead of 'no'
I thought I saw you at the bus stop, I didn't though
I hit the ground running each night
I hit the Sunday matinee
You know the greatest films of all time were never made
And if you wanted me, you really should've showed
And if you never bleed, you're never gonna grow
And it's alright now
Roaring twenties, tossing pennies in the pool
And if my wishes came true, it would've been you
In my defence, I have none
For never leaving well enough alone
But it would've been fun, if you would've been the one
Having adventures on your own
You meet some woman on the internet and take her home
We never painted by the numbers, baby
But we were making it count
You know the greatest love's of all time are over now
And it's another day waking up alone
Roaring twenties, tossing pennies in the pool
And if my wishes came true, it would've been you
In my defence, I have none
For never leaving well enough alone
But it would've been fun, if you would've been the one
If one thing had been different,
Would everything be different today?
Rosé flowing with your chosen family
And it would've been sweet, if it could've been me
In my defence, I have none
For digging up the grave another time
But it would've been fun, if you would've been the one

The opening track of Taylor's new album 'Folklore' was written by Taylor Swift and Aaron Dessner. Produced by Aaron Dessner. It was recorded by Jonathan Low and Aaron Dessner at Long Pond (Hudson Valley, NY). Vocals recorded by Laura Sisk at the Kitty Committee Studio (Los Angeles, CA). Mixed by Jonathan Low at Long Pond (Hudson Valley, NY). Mastered by Randy Merrill at Sterling Sound (New York, NY). The track was released on July 24, 2020.
What the artist means On the 1 Taylor begins softly on this delicate beat. She's living her best life and talking about how she's doing her best shit and being quite happy. She sounds calm, relaxed and fresh on this break up song. She talks directly to an ex-lover and tries her best to show him all that he's missing. She says it would have been fun is he was the one, she's adventurous on this and decries her ex lover's cheating ways. The beat is so soft and melodic and at some point it drops and sensationalizes her voice into something quite amazing. This is a beautiful opening track and if the rest of the album sounds anything like this we are in for an awesome ride.
What the song means to me The song is that classic badass break up song that I have been searching for all year long, it's production is lush and it shows off Taylor's enviable vocal range. The instrumental is lush and gives her an ambient environment to remind us why she's one of the biggest pop stars in modern history. It's quite the flex and an insanely great way to open a surprise album. Well done Ms. Swift. I will give this song a rating of 9/10.

“the 1” opens with a loud piano chord that rings through your ears. It is a song that sets the tone of the album as it is melancholic and longing of what could have been. Swift here reflects on what could have been with a lost love. If only the one had not slipped away from here. Here she wonders if only one thing had been different would they have still been together. The most profound lyric is “But we were something, don’t you think so?”.
