I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

What the artist means On the ‘this is me trying’ off her latest effort Folklore. Taylor dances over a fire beat and shows us just how essential she is. She sounds so clear on this and sings about her regrets of making an extra effort in a relationship for someone that didn't deserve her. The beat is beautiful and I love the horns too. Taylor uses her words to stab multiple times and does so effortlessly, she regrets pouring her heart to a stranger but avoids pouring out the whiskey. This is her trying to make us fall in love with her again and she's doing a great job at that. She's sounding so powerful yet tortured on this track and I can't help but admire the resilience.
What the song means to me The song means a lot to me as it reminds me of all the times I went out of my way to try and make dysfunctional relationships work out. Most times it ended up with me in the bar and shedding so many tears or it left me at the brink of a breakdown, so I know what Taylor feels. For her to put it out as a song is no mean feat and plaudits are well deserved as she still made the song ultra-listenable and relatable. Who says superstars don't feel pain too? I will give this song a rating of 8/10.
This song is most certainly NOT about the pandemic. That’s just silly. Just bc she wrote it during the pandemic doesn’t mean it’s about the pandemic. But hey, if that’s what you get out of it, to each his own.
