this is about one of james's friends that was telling him a story that he was eating at restaurant and he seen this guy in a car staring at him for a long time so he went outside to confront the man and the guy was actually sleeping so james's friend told him he wasted his hate so james wrote a song about it
This song was inspired by Waylon Jennings, a good friend of James Hetfield. Waylon told James the story of when he was on vacation in Jamaica. Waylon was in a bar when one of the local Jamaicans just kept staring at him. This started to make Waylon very angry because this guy would not stop staring at him. Latter he found out that the Jamaican was high and had no idea he was staring, meaning Waylon was angry for no reason. He was wasting his hate on the Jamaican.
to me, the song's about patronising people making you feel bad about yourself. I just seem to get that image. This is one of my favourite Metallica songs, and it was one of the very first things i learned to play when I bought my gutar.

i dont think you need much interpretation there. its just about a person so shitty that they dont even deserve hatred.
anyone who says that load is terrible has clearly either not listened to this song, or need their ears and head checked for some brain-washing disease. how the hell can you not just full-on headbang to this! also, the friend with james at the restaurant (might have been a bar) who was the inspiration for the song was actually waylon jennings. outlaw buddies would be a good term; hence james's contribution to his tribute album.
Instead of "and i will not waste my hate on you" it has to be "no one will waste my hate on you", that means you keep your hate on one person you actually hate and nobody will take it away.
