Applebite Lyrics

No one can save
The pure or the brave
No one can save them at all
Grow and decay
Grow and decay
It's only forever

Loosely or tightly
Everything fits
Even the wrists on your arm
Grow and decay
Grow and decay
It's only forever

To build on what the previous poster said, I read a great interpretation of this song somewhere that suggested it is actually a sort of parable about the fall from the Garden of Eden and original sin (hence the title, "applebite"). "Grow and decay, grow and decay, it's only forever" refers to the fact that humanity must now suffer from old age, disease, and death. "Loosely or tightly, everything fits, even the wrists on your arm" suggests people being bound in chains, further reinforcing our bondage to mortality. Remember, Chris Cornell was raised in Catholic schools.

This is my favorite Soundgarden song.

This song is about scepticism of god and heaven, "no one can save the pure or the brave" he emphasises the point by saying "no one can save them at all" then it simply states what we all know is true no matter what we believe, that we will live our lives then end up in the ground. "grow and decay" to look at an apple full of life, thrown on the ground, u know it is going to rot, perhaps he is relating us all to fruit.

I listened to this song in the dark while walking the streets at night. Needless to say, I picked up the pace while this song was playing.

I believe this song is sort of a response to Mother Love Bones “Come Bite the Apple” and is about Andy’s heroin usage. Come bite the Apple expressed how Andy knew he was killing himself by using, but continued to use. I’m pretty sure this song is a response in a way, about Chris’s point of view of so many people he loves dying from drug overdose. It continues the Apple motif and talks about different effects of Heroin use

I like how haunting the sound of this song is. Chris said that he was trying to add some lyrics just so it had something but was still trying to keep it an instrumental. I like that, how the voice in this song (as it is in many) is more thought of as a instrument, and how chris does a lot of vocalizing in sounds and tones that fill in and flesh out the end part of the song, kind of like how he used to begin his live performances when he was touring for his Euphoria Morning solo album. The song is brooding and dark. I think Ben also reffered to it as part of the "Orange Marmalde" set (this was on the into the upside interview) along with some other songs, pretty noose, and head down.. a few others I cant remember, and since Im at work, I cant load up the mp3 and listen to it. Regardless... Excellent song.
