The Duke

This is an excellent and very underrated Melon song. It's also one of their trippiest and most relaxed. I feel as though I'm right there on the beach watching the tide when I hear 'The Duke', and I always have a picture of a serene, exotic setting in the evening as the sun goes down. Of course, the song is about a huge statue of the Hawaiian King of Surfing, located on a beach there. I think that it also has an inner hinting of being lonely. Not sure Shannon liked playing this live so much, as on the recent 'Live at The Metro' DVD he seemed a bit caught of guard when Roger starts into it.

Every song but No Rain and Galaxy is underrated in my opinion. I think this song is about being happy, then having somgthing happen, and all the sudden you're depressed.

it's a wonderful song. love the harmonies, and the singing is touching than ever. for me the song says something like - some of us just feel lonely as a part of us, but we can somehow connect with nature and feel that we're not alone at all; if we can't understand humanity and belong, we can feel nature kicking us to life and giving a place to be.

This is my favorite Blind Melon song.

My interpretation is just day to day dreaming, finding alone time to peacefully dream about things that aren't necessaryily real, when reality comes and smacks you back to earth.

And yet even so, you live, and you dream, and you get smacked again.

I know its probly supposed to be a metaphor, but my first thought when looking at these lyrics is of a man shipwrecked at sea. Either way this is a fucking amazing song...Blind Melon is so underrated

Such a great song, my interpretation of this song is the connection between Nature and Us, In my case I always feel in peace when Im outside in the Beach, Mountains or whatever NATURAL place, specially smoking some POT, haha

Reminds me of “ Reckoner” by Radiohead, or “Parabol/Parabola” by Tool. There is some serious enlightenment being broadcast to all that will absorb it. You can’t accept your place in the universe within you and without you until you have given in to the forces engulfing you and acknowledging your own perception as the only thing that connects your physical being with all of existence. But there is more if you accept your limitations and then ignore them.

I feel that this song is about failing suicide. Out here in nothin\' engulfed by the sea (sea meaning depression and anxiety). And there\'s no here \'cept the fishes and me (alone dealing with his mental stability). I think I could die here (finding peace with his decision). Then I\'m hit, leveled hard by the rising tide (could mean that he failed in his attempted suicide, or someone found him and had him brought back from the brink. I\'m just livid (upset that he wasn\'t able to die with the descision that he made).
