Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

This song is tongue-in-cheek for the what we romance rockers call the "Religion of Love" lol. Its supposed to be sexy but also kind of funny. He says "Im a missionary"...really, what else does "missionary" mean? lol. Yes, its a sex position! Sex is a sacred act, and Dave Gahan and Martin Gore are devout followers of the "faith" so to speak. lol.

It seems that every song by every artist is about sex or drugs. I think that many of the people that provide comments are obsessed.
You can really hear the irony in this song. I believe this song is about Christianity and religion. I think it's about people who are scared of reality and try to convince other people of their beliefs, so that they can feel safe and good about themselves.

I don't think it's just about sex! Can't believe Martin is so obsessed. It's a hymn of love. He's a famous writer and his words are heard all around the world and so he has to write about love. He feels this as a duty. Anyway Dave sings "hallowed ground" and not "hollowed".
For me, the song's content is not overtly or only sexual. Martin once said, his lyrics are open to many interpretations. So the sexual interpretation is one possibility, but not the only one valid.
For me, with lines like 'And I will go down on my knees when I see beauty', the song's just going to say that the singer is a devout practitioner of the religion of love (which includes sex, but many other things as well).
I had always thought this was a song about Christian missionaries. With some of his other songs, i had thought of him as a christian, and one thing Christians do is have missionaries go to remote corners of the globe to preach the Christian faith.
